Congratulations to Calvin Otis and Ruthie Braunworth who were selected by their peers as the King and Queen of the court. The coronation took place at the Sadie Hawkins event on Saturday evening. Special thanks to all who attended the coronation and Sadie Hawkins and to those who volunteered at the event. It was a fun finale to Court of Hearts week. Court of Hearts Week Senior Court Speeches Dress Up Days Sadie Hawkins & Waltz Lessons Lunch Time Competitions Santiam Christian FFA wins Upper Willamette District Parliamentary Procedures Career Development Event The District FFA Parliamentary Procedures Career Development Event took place on February 10 in Scio, Oregon. The purpose of this event is to teach students how to use parliamentary procedure to conduct an orderly and efficient meeting. Students present a logical, realistic, and convincing debate on motions presented during a business meeting. These motions consist of a variety of agricultural topics that are considered important and somewhat controversial in Oregon agriculture today. Students utilize parliamentary resources to solve problems of organizational management and operations and demonstrate knowledge using parliamentary law all while advocating for or against the agricultural issue at hand. Santiam Christian competed in both the beginning and advanced contests with 2 teams in each respective division. Beginning Team members consisted of Presiding Officer – Gracie Krahn and her teammates Rory Donley-Lovato, Amanda Preston, Kyndall Davis, Sophey Roberts, and Devin Premsingh. Advanced Team members consisted of Presiding Officer – Vandon Haugen and his teammates: Mikayla Manzi, Eva Mitts, Emma Roth, LR Burns, and Matthew Mehlschau. Santiam Christian won the beginning contest and took second in the advanced division. Both teams have qualified to compete at Sectionals, which will be held Monday, February 27 in Sutherlin, Oregon. Congratulations to all team members and good luck at Sectionals! Santiam Christian FFA Member WINS Upper Willamette District Creed Speaking Career Development Event The District FFA Creed Speaking Contest took place on February 10 in Scio, Oregon. This Career Development Event is designed to provide younger members an opportunity to participate in an activity where they may display their leadership and speaking abilities. Participants articulate thoughts and ideas pertaining to the creed for public understanding. Additionally, students must be able to think on their feet as they are asked impromptu questions pertaining to sections of the creed – specifically judged on how they effectively respond to inquiries about agriculture and how it relates to the creed. Santiam Christian FFA had two participants in this event. Congratulations to freshmen Amanda Preston and Gracie Krahn for bannering in this contest. Gracie was 1st and Amanda was 3rd in the event. Gracie has now qualified to compete at Sectionals which will be held Monday, February 27 in Sutherlin, Oregon. Congratulations ladies and good luck at Sectionals! Tractor & Machinery Safety Certification Course April 21 – 23, 2017 and June 9 – 11, 2017 Both sessions will follow the following schedule: Friday 3 – 6; Saturday 8 – 5; Sunday 8 – 3 The Youth Tractor Certification Course is a 24-hour program designed to teach safety as it relates to driving and managing tractors, machinery, and other farm implements. It offers both classroom and hands-on tractor driving experiences, for youth who are at least 14 years old and who are interested in summer employment opportunities in the upcoming agricultural season. To register, you must be between 13 yrs old and a senior in high school, and complete the Young Eagles Flight Registration & Photo Release by February 15.
