The Power of Positive Language …
A series of thoughts to Change Your Life
Language
Language supports and continues your Beliefs,
Beliefs become your Experiences
Experiences influence your Outcomes
Outcomes reinforce your Language and so on …
Therefore:
Positive
Positive
Positive
Positive
Language supports and continues your Positive Beliefs,
Beliefs become your Positive Experiences
Experiences influence your Positive Outcomes
Outcomes reinforce your Language and so on … positively
Listen for your ‘self chatter’ – that very personal language you use on yourself!
If it isn’t Positive then it doesn’t serve you!
If you say “I don’t have the ability” you will get just that!
Change it to “I anticipate I can/will find the way to have the ability?”
Powerful Words
Consider Powerful Alternatives to these dis-empowering, habitual words.
CAN’T – Unless it is physically impossible then you CAN. We use it to let ourselves ‘off the hook’.
WON’T – Is a powerful statement of your WILL … your personal power.
TRY – This is hard work! Simply commit to doing it! Or determine that you Won’t!
DO IT – As the Nike position statement says – Just Do It – because action leads to
results.
TRY HARDER – Has all sorts of negative connotations.
DO YOUR BEST – Is a positive statement of empowerment.
SHOULD - dis-empowering statement we use to forgive ourselves for NOT doing something.
WILL – a commitment of your will.
BUT – This is a rebuttal of everything you, or the person you are speaking to, has just said.
HOWEVER – This is similar to but. “He’s a really nice guy, however …”
AND – Builds upon what was said before and is a positive alternative to BUT &
HOWEVER.

NO WORRIES, NO PROBLEMS
Think of all the times we use expressions such as NO WORRIES, NO PROBLEMS.
We use them to let people know that we have the situation under control, yet do we??
When you consider that the Mind does not recognize the word ‘NO’ or the negative. For
example if I say “Don’t think of a Green Apple”, what was the first thing that came into
your mind? … A Green Apple! So it is with No Worries or No Problems … subconsciously
the mind hears Worries or Problems. Change to the Positive! Replace these statements
with:
I CAN DO THAT, TOO EASY, THAT’S A CINCH, MY PLEASURE,
I’M PLEASED YOU ASKED, I’LL MAKE IT HAPPEN, CONSIDER IT DONE, CERTAINLY
CAN, ABSOLUTELY …
DON’T FORGET – you are asking the recipient to forget.
REMEMBER – how positive is this as an alternative?
Break the Habit - Ask a friend or a business associate to help you correct your negative
language patterns. Give them a ‘key word’ to use with you any time they hear you using
negative language. The word must be one with positive connotations to you, so you are not
being admonished, simply having it brought to your attention in a positive way. You will find that
soon you have abandoned your negative language patterns.
3 Levels of Personal Power
1.
2.
3.
Feeling - take charge of your emotions
Thinking - only those thoughts you want to think
Action – do only those things that support your beliefs and values.
Take charge of things you Feel, Think and Do.
Emotions – Possible Reactions - Fear, Anger, Sadness, Joy
Thinking & Action – Possible Reaction – Negative – Lay Blame, Justify and Denial
Positive – Take Responsibility & Correct.
For things to Change
First I must Change

Catch people out behaving well ... Notice and comment on preferred behaviour.
Give positive meaningful feedback. Rather than just say something was “good” or “bad” talk
about what it was you liked or how improvement can be made so the person knows what’s
needed to improve next time.
Name good behaviour ... especially for children ... comments such as, “I like the way you were
helpful, kind, thoughtful, peaceful, considerate etc”. Helps children learn the language of these
virtues.
As always, your feedback on this article is welcome.
