Tea Party Movement Comes to Indee
As Legislature Considers Tax Issue

Jennifer Webster, Buchanan County Conservation Naturalist, held a workshop at the Independence Public
Library for kids of ages 10 and up called "Go Fly a Kite!" Each person made a kite out of recycled materials
and then went outside to fly it. Next week's program is Scatology, making replica animal scat out of candy.
It will be at the library on Wed., Feb. 10 (early out day) at 1:30 p.m. And, yes, you get to eat the candy.
INDEPENDENCE — After making a splash in its first
year of existence, the "Tea Party" movement is continuing to
expand.
Next up, an Independence chapter is in the works.
Named for the Boston Tea Party, a protest by colonists in
Boston, Mass., against the British government Dec. 16,
1773, the movement originated in anti-tax protests in
response to the increase in the national debt as a result of the
stimulus package. Other key issues include TARP bailout
money paid to the banks and revelations about the bonuses
paid to AIG executives in March 2009 leading to nationwide

opening.

Northeast Iowa Resource
Conservation
and
Development Inc. RC&D, a
regional nonprofit, was
recently awarded a $25,000
Natural Resource Based
Business Opportunity Grant
from the Iowa DNR Bureau
of Forestry.
The grant will further the
business development efforts
of Emilea’s Enterprises,
which is starting up two
businesses that will provide
job opportunities for special
needs workers, Emilea’s
Woodshop and Em & Jerri’s
Coffee
Company
in
Independence.
These businesses will
create quality job opportunities for mentally and/or
physically challenged workers.
Brandon Man
Faces Gun Charge
Todd Clark, 45, from Brandon, has been charged with one
count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition as an armed career criminal.
The charge is contained in an Indictment filed Jan. 26, in
United States District Court in Cedar Rapids. The Indictment
alleges that, on or about Dec. 17, 2009, Clark possessed a 20
gauge shotgun and ammunition. The Indictment also alleges
Clark had three felony convictions for Third Degree Burglary
in Benton and Buchanan Counties in 2004 and 2005.
If convicted, Clark faces a mandatory minimum sentence
of 15 years’ imprisonment and a possible maximum sentence
of life, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and 5
years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
Clark appeared Feb. 2, in federal court for an arraignment
and Feb. 4, for a detention hearing. He was held without
bond. Clark’s next appearance for trial is set for April 5.

CITY GOVERNMENT
Council Time Change
INDEPENDENCE — The Independence City
Council will hold its next regular meeting at 6:30 p.m.
on Monday Feb. 8 at City Hall. Another change this
year will be to include the Public Forum as a part of the
regular meeting and will thus be televised.
Also next week, Governor Chet Culver will make a
visit to Independence, Thursday, Feb. 11 at 2:15 p.m. to
speak about the I-Jobs program. Currently, Culver's
visit is set to take place at the Independence City Hall.
Independence Mayor Carl Scharff confirmed details of
the visit on Thursday.

“The venture provides
employment for an important segment of the community,” said Buchanan County
Supervisor and RC&D
Board Member Ralph
Kremer.
Kremer also noted that
Northeast Iowa RC&D is
contributing approximately
$50,000 in equipment to the
venture in addition to the
grant funding.
Hazleton Area
Grants Available
HAZLETON — The Hazleton Housing Corporation will
take applications for grants from non-profit agencies in
Hazleton, the immediate rural area and the Oelwein School
District.
An application for it is available by contacting Ellen
Gaffney at 2073 118th Street, Hazleton, 50641, calling 6362660 or e-mailing [email protected]. Applications without
official forms will not be considered. They are to be returned
by April 1 to the above address. Distribution of funds will be
decided at the next Housing meeting, April 24, 2010.
You are asked to provide the name and purpose of your
organization, the project description and needs, your expected outcomes and how and for what purpose the funds will be
used.
"We encourage you to apply if you live in the Hazleton
area and have a worthy project," said Ellen Gaffney.
