I.Descriptionofthecourse:
Thepurposeofthecourseistogivetostudentstoolstoimprovetheirpublicspeakingand
oralpresentationskillsinalaw-relatedcontext.Toachievethisgoal,theclasswillanalyze
howtobuildanddeliveraneffectivepresentation.Emphasiswillbeplacedonpractical
exercises.Basedonthetechniquesdiscussedinclass,eachstudentwillprepareanddeliver
informativeandpersuasivepresentations,whichwillbefilmed.Studentswillreceive
feedbackfromtheprofessorandfromotherstudents,andwillanalyzetheirperformance.
II.Assignmentsandevaluations:
Assignmentswillincludereadingsfromthetextbook,in-classpracticalexercises,makinga
pointthroughastory,deliveringinformativeandpersuasivepresentations,andwritten
analysesbythestudentsontheirownperformance.Thisseminarisgradedonapass/fail
basis.Students’exerciseswillbeevaluatedonmultiplecriteriaaimedatprovidingaskills
assessmentandprovidingabasisforcontinuingimprovementthroughoutthesemester.
III.Learningoutcomes
Theexpectationisthatbytheendofthesemester,studentswillhavereviewedand
practicedkeyskillsthatsupporttheeffectivepreparationanddeliveryofinformativeand
persuasivepresentationsonlaw-relatedtopics.Aftertakingthisclass,studentswillknow
howtoadaptatopictoanaudience,selectinformation,structureanddelivera
presentation,withemphasisplacedonconnectingwiththeaudience.
IV.Importantpracticalconsiderations:
Pleasenotethatthiscourseaimstoimprovestudents’oralcommunicationskills.
Therefore,studentsmustfocusonoralpresentation;theirpresentationshallnotconsistof
readingwrittentext.Slidesmaybeusedtofocustheaudience’sattentiononimportant
points.Inordertoincreasethequalityoflistening,studentsareaskedtorefrainfromusing
laptopsduringtheirfellowstudents’presentations.
