Workshops with Storytellers KS1/2
Lift the story off the page – World Book Night 2015
Encourage a love for stories in your pupils. We’ve commissioned three storytellers from different
cultures on a rare tour of the North of England. These versatile tellers will respond to your curricular
needs. They can work closely with one class or work their way around the whole school. Make World
Book Night 2015 the week your pupils strengthen their joy for stories.

Alia Alzougbi – KS1 & 2
Alia specialises in stories from the Islamic and Middle Eastern traditions.
Her work generates exciting discussion about other cultures.
Alia has experienced first-hand the conflict of the Middle East. Her family
escaped Lebanon during the 1982 Israeli invasion, then moved to Iraq
and fled to Baghdad during the Gulf War. After moving to Jordan, then
Syria, they settled back in Lebanon.
Using story she will encourage pupils to explore their perceptions about
racial differences. Alia creates a fun environment where everyone's voice
can be heard. The exchange of ideas following Alia's vibrant storytelling
will leave pupils inspired and eager to learn more.
Her work has seen her win the 2011 ‘Best Storyteller’ award by the Fringe report, nominated for a BAFTA
Scotland and appear on BBC Arabic Television &Radio.
Githanda Githae – KS1 & 2
Githanda grew up in Kenya. Inspired by his culture, he tells stories of African
folklore. He has a well-earned reputation for elaborate, energetic and high
paced storytelling. If you are looking for a warm, interactive storyteller –
Githanda is hard to beat!
Githanda will create storytellers out of your pupils. His workshop explores key
story making techniques. Pupils will look at story structure, genre and
scenario setting. They will learn to bring their story to life with African
performance elements like dramatic narration, banter, chant, recitation, song,
music, and movement. By the end of the workshop pupils will be ready for
their debut storytelling showcase - a snippet of their story performed in front of their class.
Githanda has performed at major storytelling events internationally. He is the Creative Manager at Zamaleo
ACT - a performing arts & culture organisation in Eastern Africa.
Emily Hennessey – KS1 & 2
Scandinavian storyteller Emily explores Norse mythology and
Scandinavian folktales to unlock new myths and creative writing
from the minds of her pupils.
Her immersive workshop leads pupils to create their own myths
after exploring the basics of story; character, theme, structure and
of course the imagination…
The pupils are the storytellers. They will create new pieces of
creative writing with a richer use of language and imagery expanding into the world of gods, magic and
adventure.
Emily’s recent performances include the Royal Opera House, the Viking Ship in Denmark and Beyond the
Border Storytelling Festival.

Settle Stories Guarantee
We are an arts and heritage charity that specialises in bringing world renowned artists to the North
of England and to our remote community in Settle.
We produce the largest Storytelling Festival in the North of England. The charity runs an extensive
learning programme, working with international storytellers from around the world. Our work has
been featured by the Guardian, BBC, & ITV. We have a high success rate of gaining media coverage
of storytellers visiting schools. We have been working in partnership with schools for over 5 years
and pride ourselves in selecting the highest quality storytellers so you don’t have to.
We have chosen to work with these storytellers after undergoing a rigorous assessment process
since November 2014. We only work with the best. That is our guarantee.
Cost:
All storytellers are £350 for a full school day. Schools must provide lunch for their storyteller. Schools
can share a storyteller for half a day at £175. Schools must liaise with one another to arrange this
and are responsible for transporting the storyteller between schools. Settle Stories will organise
travel (drop off- morning) and collection (end of school day) and will arrange accommodation for
storytellers.
