I
f you were to guess, what
would you say is the most
dangerous room in your home?
If you guessed bathroom, you are
correct. Nearly 1 in 3 seniors over
the age of 65 fall each year, about
80 percent of those falls occurring
in the bathroom. Of course, there
are some easy fixes in order to make
your bathroom as user friendly as
possible, but not all of those are
cheap! Here are a few tips you can
use to create a safe haven out of
your bathroom that won’t break the
Noun: a polite
expression of praise
or admiration.
Verb: politely congratulate or
praise (someone) for something.
Either way, compliments are a good
thing. It’s nice to receive them and
it feels good to give a compliment
to another and make them feel like
they stand out from others. In this
new world of ours with social media,
hard core news, and (do I dare
utter the word)
“politics,” maybe
we should take a
step back and seek
to find something
in everyone in
which we can pay
them a compliment.
It can sometimes be difficult to
receive a compliment. If someone
likes your new hair style, do you roll

anyway, it is better to have
them there when needed than
to not have them!
Make sure your shower/tub
surface is skid proof, or even
extra skid proof! Standing on
a wet surface is almost certain
to lead to trouble. Sometimes
individual decals don’t cover
the entire floor and having a
skid proof shower “rug” is
helpful.
Adequate lighting at night
is important. We almost all
get up and go to the bathroom when it is dark outside.
Light your bathroom up
with nightlights so you are
not searching the wall for the
light switch. Especially as we
age, we have the tendency to
be dizzy as soon as we get out
of bed; dark AND dizzy lead
to an even more dangerous
situation.
Make sure your water heater
temperature is at 120 degrees
or lower. As we age our skin
becomes thinner and even hot

your eyes and respond that you are
having a bad hair day? Or if they like
your new shirt do you tell them you
couldn’t find anything else to wear,
or that you got it at a
thrift store? Why be so
hard on yourself ? You
should practice saying
“thank you” and leave
it at that.
But we’ve probably
all had a time when we received a
compliment and in that 12 second
delay wondered if it was sincere.
Maybe it was sincere, maybe it
was slightly on the sarcastic side.
Regardless, don’t dwell on it, just say
“thank you” and move on. Life is
certainly too short.
It’s important to give compliments
that are not always about the way
a person looks. Try looking at the
person’s character; are they kind,

• As we age,
we all know rugs
become a “no-no”
as they present a
huge fall hazard
as they bunch up,
move, catch us off
guard and create an
uneven surface that
we have to be careful of. However, a
rug in the bathroom
is a necessity as we
don’t want to get
the floor wet when
we step out of the
shower. Make sure you have
a skid resistant mat that lies
as flat on the floor as possible
to catch the water. If you
can, even pick the rug up off
the floor in-between showers.
No other rugs in the bathroom please!
Install grab bars in the shower and by the toilet. Maybe
you haven’t had an issue
getting up from the toilet or
in the shower yet; install them
a good listener,
inspiring? List the
qualities that make
them a wonderful friend
such as, “you have a caring heart.”
Make sure the compliment makes
the other person happy, builds selfesteem and above all, is genuine.
On another note, what
about com·ple·ment?
What’s the difference?
Complement means to
complete something. It
enhances it or makes it
perfect. Like a good wine
will complement a
meal, or that sweater
complements her eyes.
So take time to give
your compliments to
the chef and make
someone’s day. It will
probably make yours too.

water can cause burns if we
aren’t careful.
• Something many may not
have thought about is to ensure access to the bathroom.
Doors lock from the inside,
we all want our privacy,
however, if we fall and we
need help we need to assure
that someone can get into the
bathroom in a timely manner
to assist. Try putting a lock
on both sides of the door so
if someone needs to enter,
they can unlock the door!
Hopefully many of us have not
had a fall, or even a close call in
the bathroom yet but be proactive
and prevent that from happening
to you. Take a few minutes today
to look around and see what minor
changes you can make to make
your bathroom safer for you.
