Groovy Greeks - Holy Trinity Primary School

Holy Trinity Primary School
Creative Curriculum Theme Plan for Sycamores Class, Y3
Groovy Greeks Terms 5 & 6
What will we be doing during this creative curriculum unit?
As scientists we will be following in the footsteps of Thales of Miletus, experimenting with magnets and forces
that attract and repel. The pupils will have the opportunity to investigate the strength of magnets, making
predictions and evaluating their experiments.
As historians we will be researching and experiencing the life, technology and ideas of the Ancient Greek
civilisation. Our focuses might include: ships, technology, warfare, mythical figures, and architecture.
As geographers we will be spotting patterns and trends in the geography of Ancient Greece. We will learn how
Greece flourished as a nation and the changes in settlement use.
As artists we will learn about the great artists and architects of Ancient Greece. A particular theme for our art
will be the Ancient Greek style that showed joyous freedom of movement. We will be using paint to recreate
the vivid colours that were used by the Greeks.
As designers we will use our new knowledge of Ancient Greece to undertake the design and construction of our
own Greek city state. We will be working using a variety of materials including cardboard, wood and clay.
Our Creative Curriculum will develop these three key themes:
Creativity
Perseverance
To develop our pupils’ creative skills,
we will explore Greek society and ask
them to create new city states that
draw together the ideologies and
features of the Greeks, whilst also
adding in some new features of their
own.
Creativity will also be fostered with
opportunity to experiment with
representations of movement in paint
and pencil. The experimentation will
allow children to express themselves
in their art.
To develop our pupils’ perseverance,
we will be undertaking a lot of this
topic in collaborative small groups.
These small groups will encourage the
children to persevere in learning
relationships with each other.
Spirituality
To develop our pupils’ spirituality, we
will look at the beliefs and morals of
Ancient Greek culture. We will use the
study of these values to consider what
we believe and feel is important in our
society today.
What other subjects will we learn during these terms, while the topic is being studied?
RE
PE
French
In terms 5 & 6 we will be exploring
Judaism. We will be looking into the
key beliefs, practises and festivals of
the Jewish faith.
There will be opportunities to discuss
and perhaps experience the rich
symbolism and vibrant festivals of
Judaism.
In these terms we will be able to take
part in some great British summer
sports. Term 5 will give us the chance
to compete as an individual in athletics
and play together as a team in
rounders.
Term 6 will see us returning to our bat
and ball skills by playing tennis and
cricket.
(We use the ‘La Jolie Ronde’ scheme as
a basis for our French learning at KS2)
Food will be the central learning point
in French for term 5. This is often a
favourite and may include setting up
shops to operate with some French.
Now that our French skills have grown
we will try to learn the days of the
week and months of the year.
