The R.I.C.E. Process
Sister Elizabeth was a dreamer and a doer... an innovator...a thinker...a teacher.
Her vision inspired her to design and develop our school philosophy, known as
RICE. You might wonder why the word RICE. Well, Sister Elizabeth noted that
rice is a familiar and simple food staple, and is easily understood by all people
around the world as nourishing and life-giving. RICE is important to our school
and our community in so many ways. The key features are reflection, learning,
planning, participation, and evaluation. RICE leads the administration to plan and
advance the Academy’s future. RICE guides our teachers to set and accomplish
curriculum and program goals. And students are taught and encouraged to use
the RICE values in all that they do. RICE is not only a school philosophy, but a
way of living our lives daily. Each day this week we will look at each value of the
RICE philosophy that Sister Elizabeth so lovingly designed.
The R in RICE stands for Shared Responsibility. God creates each one of us with
unique features, characteristics, talents, and flaws with a specific job to do or role
to play. Although we are all different, we share the same responsibilities of being
good citizens, good stewards of the earth, good persons of faith, and good
friends. Sister Elizabeth hoped that each person would feel accountable to these
responsibilities and take ownership and action to see them met. That is an
awesome responsibility! It may seem too much! But, the key is in sharing the
responsibility. We each take a piece that is right for us, and together it adds up.
At Ancillae-Assumpta, some of us are students, some of us are parents, some of
us are teachers, staff, Handmaids, but we are all called to do our part for the
whole. We share in the responsibility of making AAA the best school and
community it can be.
Tomorrow we will learn more about the next letter in the RICE Process.
