Council Highlights

We here at Pilgrim come from many varied traditions: some of us grew up in the United
Church of Christ, others come from a Methodist tradition, others from a Lutheran
denomination, some of us from the Catholic church, and there are a few of us that didn’t
grow up in church. Many of us learned different practices within this Lenten season that
include abstaining from certain foods, giving up our vices, and adding one or two
additional events at church. But these practices are not what make the season of Lent
a holy and liminal time. Part of the beauty of this season is that it draws us back to God,
requiring us to be more mindful of ourselves and our lives for a few weeks. The
sacredness of these days is found in the very words we will hear on Ash Wednesday:
“From dust you came and to dust you shall return.” No matter how our ears hear these
words, they are saturated in the acknowledgement of this present moment. I believe that
this is what makes Ash Wednesday so beautiful and cherished in hearts, that it draws
us back to right now, to this present moment and grounds our feet right where we stand.
I wonder what it would look and feel like if we as a church practiced being present for
Lent? I wonder how Lent would feel if we took these weeks to remember the ground on
which we stand, feeling the air enter and our breath leaving our bodies? I wonder how
the season would turn if we practiced being still?
I know that some of you will give things up for Lent (abstaining from something is an
excellent spiritual practice), some of you may fast during this season, others of you may
use this season to be intentional about sharing beauty and goodness. But I would like to
invite you to practice the sacred pause of being still throughout these next couple weeks.
It’s not terribly difficult to do (we just have to remember to do it). A sacred pause is as
easy as pulling into a parking lot, taking a moment before you grab your keys and breath
in slowly, and out slowly. It’s as simple as pausing for a moment before you walk out the
door to work to just listen to the noises that surround you. It’s taking one minute of your
day to stand outside and listen to the birds (feel free to set a timer on your phone). For
those of you that want a more structured practice of pause, let me suggest an app
(available for free download for Apple and Android devices) called Centering Prayer by
Contemplative Outreach, Ltd. This practice of being still helps keep us in the moment,
pulling us back to where we are so we can be mindful of the presence of God that
surrounds us as we ‘turn our eyes toward Jerusalem.’
Many blessings to you on this sacred journey of Lent.

Monthly National observances. We focused on continual reminders to help everyone define what inclusion means to
them as well as our congregation.

African American History month – Slide presentation
Woman’s history month – Slide presentation
Dementia/brain awareness for Alzheimer month – Slide presentation
We did a congregational survey of the congregation to determine what diversity means to each person.
Guest speakers Pardeep Kaleka and Arno Michaelis from Serve 2 United. (Note: These guys were featured on the
national talk show “The View”. It was exciting to see the reception they got for their story and to know we heard
them in person)
 We participated in the Transgender Day of Remembrance
 Martha Whitaker did a children’s sermon focusing on diversity and inclusion
 Portal – a local organization that provides employment for the disabled, took over the service for a day. They did a
great job explaining what they do and the need for employment for everyone no matter what their abilities.
 Portal came to church on a Sunday to sell the art projects of their clients. They had beautiful items some of which
were made from glass.
 We chose a colorful, rainbow picture frame for the ONA certificate and hung it in the Narthex.
2017  We will be reviewing the building accessibility audit that was done in 2010.That audit identified things that needed to
be done each year. We will review what was planned to see if what was done and if there is anything that needs
to be done in the coming years.
 We plan to strengthen a section in the library that focuses on inclusion topics.
 We identified monthly observances that allow for awareness and education on inclusion topics.

And the voice of the turtledove
is heard in our land.
