BREATHE IN, BREATHE OUT
Bishop Brian’s Blog
One of my favorite responses to the question of what Lenten practices folks are engaging
in is when someone said, “I’m going to work on breathing again.”
It was a light conversation so I made an attempt at a humorous response. Something like,
“Good luck with that – but I think breathing just kind of happens.”
She responded with a smile on her face,
“You would think so. But I really feel like I need to clear my lungs.”
Sensing a deeper meaning behind her comment I asked,
“So, are you feeling much of what you are breathing in these days is pretty toxic?”
This was clearly a moment of Grace, because she stared right back me and said,
“That is exactly right!”
Pausing for a moment, and in a double header of Grace, I remembered a prayer that was
shared with me. I offered, “I have something that was given to me. It might be helpful.”
And here it is:
Breathe in love, life, mercy
Breathe out worry, fear, anxiety
Breathe in peace, joy, hope
Breathe out busyness, selfishness, greed
Breathe in light, Breathe out darkness
Breathe in joy, Breathe out sadness
Breathe in hope, Breathe out despair
Breathe in God’s Light
Breathe in God’s Love
Breathe in God’s Spirit
*(Since it was shared with me I am not certain where this comes from. One person
suggested it was the Methodist Covenant Prayer, but it is different than what I know
to be that prayer.)
My hope is this prayer will be helpful for you,
as it has been for me, during your Lenten journey.
THE SHACK
by Chuck Stone
The Shack is an imaginative novel written by Wm. Paul Young (in collaboration with others) in
2007. It was on the New York Times Best Seller list and there are over two million copies in print.
The book deals with a man who has suffered a terrible loss in life, something that happens to most
of us sooner or later, and how God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – personified for a short time as
humans in the world, helps him deal with his loss, sorrow, anger and forgiveness. Wisdom,
personified as a woman named Sophia, also lends a hand.
The setting for the transformative action is a run-down shack located in a
remote area. The building is “improved” for the occasion by the Trinity for table
fellowship, carpentry and gardening projects, and both deep and humorous
conversations among the Three principals and Mack, the protagonist. The way in
which Father or “Papa”, the Son and the Holy Spirit are portrayed is surprising to Mack, and likely
to the reader. Not to give too much away, Papa, also called Elousia [the Creative Ground of all
Being] is the Wise One with the plan; Christ as Jesus is a very warm and gentle, practical and
approachable, and definitely “down to earth” individual; and the Holy Spirit (a woman here called
Sarayu [Wind] is creative, mysterious and very active (pro- and otherwise).
The love and respect among the Three is wonderful in Mack’s eyes. They
speak as one yet retain definite individualities. Their concern for Mack and his
situation is deep and they devise ways to help him heal. The book is easy to
become involved in and to continue to read. It was an emotional one for me in
several places, and I know that many people have reread it often and given
copies to others. Although it is a fictional novel, it is based on belief and
thinking dating back to early Christianity. Many of the conversations in it will ring true for modern
Christians, even though the Trinity is seldom emphasized in Christianity today.
The story is absorbing – and so are the characters! The tone of the book is less mainline
church-oriented than evangelical/charismatic Christian, or even “none” oriented, but then so are
most people today. As such, it may not appeal to everyone, but I found it helpful in appreciating
the importance and mystery of the Holy Trinity. The recently released motion picture based on the
book is doing well at the box-office. I have not yet seen the movie, but there is a copy of the book
in the church library for those who are interested.
