OvertheEasterweekendweentertainedmany
of Brisbane’s best bridge players at our major
bridge congress, the BBC Easter Pairs and
Teams.
Onceagainitwasahugelysuccessfulcoupleof
dayswithsomenotableperformancesbysome
ofourclubmembers.Resultswillappearlaterin
this newsletter but I would like to congratulate
all members who played and a special “welldone!”toallourwinnersandrunners-up.
Thelogisticsoforganizingtheseeventsarehuge
and require enormous efforts from members. I
want to thank Chris Larter for coordinating the
entire event, and to Chris and Arne for setting
uppriortoplay.
Janette Hiatt is fast becoming a legend for her
brilliance in organizing the catering at these
events, and once again our visitors
congratulated me on our Club’s ability to
provide brilliant catering in the context of a
happyplayingenvironment.
Janette wishes to join me in giving enormous
thanks to those selfless members who worked
so hard in the kitchens and preparing the food
over the two days. Chris and Archie brilliantly

The many boxes of boards required were dealt
byChrisLarterandJulieJeffries(whoremained
calm and patient when she encountered
problemswiththedealingmachine,andrefused
anyformofreimbursementforherwork).
Our terrific caddies were Alan McKenna, David
O’Gorman and Pam Singley (David was running
upanddownstairs,loadedwithboxesofboards
-Iwonderifthisispartofhisfitnessprogram!)
Chris Snook and Julie Jeffries were our
wonderful directors – thankyou for a smoothly
runcongress.
John and Lynn Kelly arrived early each day to
greet all players and collect money, and John
hadthethanklesstaskofbalancingthebooks.
Thankyou to those who donated the delicious
foodwhichkepteveryonegoingduringtheday,
and those who stayed behind each day to help
cleanandpackup.
AhugethankyoutoKerryPopeforvolunteering
many hours of hard work to strip back, clean
and re-surface the upstairs kitchen floor in
readinessforthecongress.
Wereceivedcomplimentsontheappearanceof
ourclubwithitsnewpaintandupstairsblinds.

We will again be joining other clubs from
around Australia in participating in the Bridge
forBrainResearchChallenge(1-7May).Money
raised goes to NeuRA (Neuroscience Research
Australia).NeuRA’sgoalistoprevent,treatand
cure brain and nervous system diseases,
disordersandinjuriesthroughmedicalresearch.
TheBridgeforBrainResearchsessionatBBCwill
be the Saturday 1pm Duplicate session on 6
May.Tablefeeswillbe$10perplayerwith$8
goingtoBrainResearchand$2toBBC.
Beforethebridge,therewillbeaBBQstartingat
12noonwithprofitsgoingtoBrainResearch.A
burgerwillcost$5andasausageonbreadwill
cost$2.

BBC Graded Butler Pairs Congress (Sunday 28
May)
Even though we are just recovering from the
EasterCongress,ournextcongressiscomingup
onSunday28May.ItisGradedButlerPairsand
theentryformisnowavailable.
What is Butler scoring? Butler scoring uses
IMP’s, which is how Teams are scored, instead
of Matchpoints which we play at our usual
sessions.Theaimistomakeyourcontract.

Opening leads can be one of the most difficult
and frustrating aspects of Bridge. Text books
offer lists of desirable opening leads, but the
flawhereisthatlistscannotsitatthetableand
listentothebidding.Westinthefollowingdeal

ruffed a heart, cashed the Ace of Clubs and
ruffedaclub.Nextcameaheartruff,aclubruff
andanotherheartruff.Souththentookthetop
diamonds and ruffed a diamond for his tenth
trick.EastwaslefttogazeforlornlyattheAKQ
oftrumps.
West had Hearts and Clubs under control and
nobody had bid Diamonds, so the clear
implication to West is that trumps most likely
will be the prime source of tricks for South.
