DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY NORWICH UNIVERSITY ARMY ROTC 158 HARMON DRIVE NORTHFIELD, VT 05663 WELCOME FROM THE PROFESSOR OF MILITARY SCIENCE NORWICH UNIVERSITY ARMY RESERVE OFFICERS’ TRAINING CORPS (ROTC) Congratulations on achieving an Army ROTC Scholarship and welcome to Norwich University Army ROTC! Your persistence with scholastic, athletic, and leadership qualities have set you above your peers. Your accomplishment is commendable. Begin now to think in terms of academic excellence, physical fitness, personal accountability, and mature, responsible behavior. Do not be satisfied with “good enough.” Once you activate your four-year scholarship, you must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, pass an Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT), and meet Army height/weight requirements in order to receive these benefits. The Army ROTC program is physically demanding and you must take the time now to get in shape; a regular regimen of push-ups, sit-ups, and running will help you acquire goals to stay physically fit and be ready to pass the APFT. You can visit www.apft-standards.com for more information about passing the APFT and meeting the height/weight requirements. Your packet also gives APFT standards you must meet in order to start your scholarship benefits. Law enforcement situations involving your arrest or a criminal record may disqualify you from the program and forfeit your scholarship. The use of illegal substances or alcohol is grounds for immediate removal from the Army ROTC program and immediate loss of scholarship. I know most families have made financial decisions based on you receiving an ROTC scholarship. People expect more from you – don’t let them down! Army ROTC is training for a formal profession. America’s sons and daughters will be in your care and they deserve the absolute best leadership you can provide, just as you deserve the best training we can deliver to make you a leader. You must realize this is a serious business and we will be hard on you - you must earn your commission as a Second Lieutenant – we will not give it to you. This packet contains important information to assist in preparing for your arrival to Norwich. We will see you on August 21st during your arrival and at the scholarship information session. On August 22nd, all scholarship recipients will be required to take the Army Physical Fitness Test in the morning along with filling out enrollment paperwork. Report to Norwich University with all of the items required for entrance into the Corps of Cadets. You should also bring appropriate clothes and shoes to take the APFT. Norwich Forever! Eric W. Page 5 of 6 ACADEMIC PREPARATION It is important to remember: Every part of your experience here at Norwich will be challenging. Academics and attendance in ALL classes need to be your priority. The most common struggle for most cadets is Math and Science courses in their freshman year. If you foresee having these challenges in any field of study, we strongly recommend utilizing the Academic Achievement Center as soon as you arrive. This is not to be taken lightly! If after your first semester, you have below a 2.0 GPA, all of your benefits (scholarship, stipend) will be suspended for the next semester, and until you get over a 2.0 GPA. Page 6 of 6
