We are updating this course for the AA-T in Spanish.
SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes)
1. Recognize and identify geographical features on a map of the Iberian Peninsula. 2. Interpret and contrast cultural differences between the United States and Spain and Portugal. 3. Examine and analyze various forms of cultural expression such as music, visual arts, literature and
dance. 4. Explain the history of Spain and Portugal through oral or written expression.

1a. Demonstrate with a map knowledge of the geography of Spain and
 Portugal. 2a. Demonstrate in writing and discussion knowledge of the important historical events
of
Spain and Portugal, including the Roman, Visigothic and Moorish
 occupations;
exploration and colonization activities; decline as 
world powers; and the Spanish Civil War,
1936-1939. 2b. Demonstrate in writing and discussion knowledge of the important institutions in Spain and

Portugal, including the monarchy and the church. 3a. Demonstrate in writing and discussion knowledge of the culture of Spain and Portugal,
including
 the languages, literature, architecture, music, customs and social 
traditions. 4a. Write short essays and prepare reports on the civilization of Spain

1. Lectures and discussions in Spanish on the geography (mountains, 
rivers, natural regions,
provinces, great cities), history (early
 settlements; the Roman, Visigothic and Moorish periods;
the great 
explorations and colonizations of both countries; their decline as 
great world
powers; Spain's Civil War of 1936-1939), and
 institutions (the languages spoken of Spain and
Portugal from
 earliest time through the colonial period and up to the present
 day). 
2. Survey study of Iberian culture in its various aspects: literature (El Cid, the ballad, the
picaresque novel, Don Quixote and the 
novel of chivalry, the drama of the Golden Age, the
entremés, Camoens, Romanticism, Realism, the Generation of '98), architecture 
(the great
cathedrals, castles, the Alhambra, the 
Mosque of Córdoba), music (composers such as Falla
and Albeniz,
 Flamenco music, the Zarzuela), dance, and social and cultural 
traditions
in general.
Methods of Instruction
Lecture, class discussions, group work. Short papers will be written, and reports made in class--topics to be 
selected from a list
handed out. Films, slides, and recordings, which are pertinent to the topic being 
currently
considered, will be shown or played whenever possible. Methods of Evaluation of Student Performance
May include, but are not limited to, pre- and post-assessments, quizzes, exams, compositions,
research projects and presentations.

2. In an essay analyze the fundamental characteristics of Francisco Franco's dictatorship and its
consequences for Spanish foreign relations and politics during his regime. OR Analyze Spain's transition to a democratic monarchy and its consequences for Spain today.
