Canto 12?

the Minotaur, ½ bull ½ man;
They see the river of Blood in round 1 of Circle 7; the violent
against their neighbors are punished here; people who shed the
blood of others
Alexander the Great and Attila the Hun are here
The punishment: they are immersed in the river of boiling blood
Each person is immersed in the blood according to how much
blood they spilled on earth
If they try to get out of the boiling blood, Centaurs shoot arrows at
them so they get back in; at first Chiron the Centaur does not want
them to pass, but finally he agrees and has Nessus guide them
What happens in
Canto 13?
Canto 13: Circle 7 Round 2: The Violent Against Themselves

Canto 14: Circle 7 Round 3: The Violent Against God, Nature, & Art
The punishment here is a plain of burning sand below and a rain of
fire from above
There are 3 classes of sinners here: Blasphemers (violent against
God); Sodomites (homosexuals; violent against Nature); and Usurers
(Violent against Art)
Capaneus is here, still blaspheming god – he won’t repent for
blaspheming
What happens in
Canto 15?
Canto 15: Circle 7 Round 3 Cont. The Violent Against Nature
Brunetto Latino is here – he was a “sodomite” (homosexual) who
was a mentor to Dante and influenced his writing

Canto 16?
Canto 16: Circle 7 Round 3 some more….
The Violent Against Nature and Art
Dante meets 3 more “sodomites” from Florence, also respected men,
in Canto 16

(like a rope) and drop it over the edge of an abyss - this makes a

Canto 17: Circle 7 Round 3…. The Violent Against Art; Geryon
The monster that came from the abyss when he saw Dante’s cord
is Geryon, the monster of Fraud
They have to fly down the cliff on Geryon’s back to get to lower
Round 3
In round three are the “violent against art” or usurers
Usurers lend money to others at a high interest rate – therefore,
they are violent against the arts, or gifts, god gives to make money
These souls are punished not only by the hot sands and raining
fire, but they also have purses hung around their necks identifying
their families
Geryon now carries Virgil and Dante down to circle 8

Canto 18: Circle 8 The Fraudulent and Malicious
Bolgia 1 the Panderers and Seducers
Upper half of the Hell of the Fraudulent and Malicious
Those punished are in “ditches” or pouches called Bolgia
Panderers and Seducers are seen first; they are punished by having
to walk in two lines next to a ditch while horned demons whip them
and make them hurry. These people goaded other people to serve
them in life; now they are goaded by demons in death.
Bolgia 2 the Flatterers
The flatterers are punished by being sunk in poop (excrement);
they were full of poop in real life; now they are stuck in it!

Canto 19?
Canto 19: Circle 8 Bolgia 3
The Simoniacs
A simoniac is someone who sells church “favors” for profit
Like – if you sin, you can get absolution if you pay a certain fee
Because these are crimes of “holy” men in the church, their
punishment is that they are stuffed head-first into baptismal fonts
and their feet are burning with fire
When another simoniac dies, the first one in the font is sucked down
the drain forever – Pope Nicholas III is here

Canto 20: Circle 8 Bolgia 4 The Fortune Tellers and Diviners
Canto 20?
These guys are here for using forbidden arts to look into the future
Cornell Notes
Topic/Objective:
Their punishment is that they have their heads turned backwards and
for eternity they walk backwards, never seeing what is in front
of them; their eyes are also blinded by tears, so they cannot
see the present, let alone the future
The most famous fortune teller/diviner/prophet is Tiresias, the blind
seer (prophet) from Thebes
What happens in
Canto 21?
Canto 21: Circle 8 Bolgia 5 The Grafters
These guys are stuck in sticky pitch to symbolize their “sticky fingers”
in life – they’re thieves
Meanwhile, demons stick grappling hooks in them if they try to get
out of the pitch (because they stuck their hooks into people for their
own gain during life)
The Senator of Lucca is here
Because the bridge to Bolgia 6 is shattered, demons have to escort
Them to the next Bolgia – these are the “Gargoyle” Cantos

Canto 22: Circle 8 Bolgia 5 again….Still grafters!
These Grafters hide under the sticky pitch like frogs, trying to stay

What happens in
Canto 23?
Canto 23: Circle 8 Bolgia 6 The Hypocrites
Their punishment is that they are wrapped in heavy, leaden robes
and are forced to walk around and around a narrow track
The heavy robe looks like a monk’s habit (robe) – the contrapasso is
that these hypocrites look holy on the outside, but inside they carry
the weight of their deceit and sin
CAIAPHAS is here – he was the high priest of Jerusalem that
presided over Christ’s crucifixion – therefore, he is crucified to the
floor of hell in Bolgia 6 where everybody who passes by walks
on him

Canto 24: Circle 8 Bolgia 7 … The Thieves
Canto 24?
These guys are punished by reptiles who curl themselves around
the sinners’ bodies like rope, tying their hands together
while they are tied, other reptiles fly around and tear them apart,
causing the sinners to burst into flames and then turn into ashes
Then they turn into people again and go through this again
The hands of the thieves led to their crimes, which is why they
are now bound in their death
VANNI FUCCI is here – he doesn’t want to be recognized – he stole
holy items from a church and never repented –

What happens in
Canto 25?
Canto 25: Circle 8 Bolgia 7 …. MORE Thieves!
That horrible Vanni Fucci!!! even in hell here, he curses God and
Dante, throwing up his fists in “figs” (like giving God and Dante
the finger – he’s a creep)
Weird stuff happens here while the reptiles punish the thieves Like, lizards wrap themselves around the souls, turning into the souls
And making the tortured souls into lizards – CREEPY!!

Canto 26: Circle 8 Bolgia 8 The Evil Counselors
These guys are punished by moving around Bolgia 8 hidden from
View by the flames that constantly surround them
These guys stole the wisdom they received from god and used it
for low purposes; therefore, they are hidden from others like they
hid their bad intentions from others while their own guilty consciences
burn them
Ulysses (Odysseus) and Diomede are here – Troy fell because of
Their deceit
What happens in
Canto 27?
Canto 27: Circle 8 Bolgia 8 some more…Evil Counselors…again???
Here’s a bad guy: it’s Guido da Montefeltro, whom Pope Boniface VIII
persuaded to sin to help him gain control of more land – Boniface
promised Guido complete absolution of his sin of treachery, but
Guido did NOT receive absolution for helping Boniface because you
cannot be forgiven for a sin before you commit it
Like the other is Bolgia 8, Guido da Montefeltro is punished in a wall
Of flame that departs long enough for him to talk to Dante

Since these guys during life tried to sow discord, or hack apart the
things God intended to be united, they are hacked apart throughout
all eternity with a big sword wielded by a scary demon
After they are hacked apart, they make a circuit around a pit, during
which time their bodies heal, only to be hacked up by the demon
again. Yuck.

and his son Ali, who sowed a discord between Christianity and

the Greek/roman Gods

Leader Caesar, are both feet first in Satan’s other two mouths.
After witnessing this disgusting display, Dante and Virgil end their
3rd day in the Inferno by climbing up Satan’s legs, which stretch
through the earth to the Southern Hemisphere, and begin their
