USBC Bowling Combine 2011
Reported by Ashleigh Calcote
During the month of August, the United States Bowling Congress invited youth bowlers from all over the
country to demonstrate their skills at the International Training and Research Center located in Arlington,
Texas. Not only were youth bowlers invited, but collegiate coaches as well.
This event, the USBC College Combine, permitted prospective athletes to meet with coaches from well
known schools and provided the coaches a chance to scope out talent for their future teams. This Combine,
available to those who are starting their sophomore year of high school including those who have already graduated, put the athletes through rigorous fitness tests along with written and bowling tests. Attendees from Houston (listed in alphabetical order) included Ashleigh Calcote, Ashley Lawley, Madeleine McDuff, Sean Sadat,
and Dominick Savage.
In the fitness section, the athletes were tested on how far they could go on a treadmill in twelve minutes, how
high they could jump, how flexible they were along with several other tasks. The next section included a bowling IQ test, a personality test, and a problem solving test. Following that the youth were put on the lanes to
showcase their talent. From having to adjust speed to attempting to pick up a 1-2-4-10 washout, the bowlers
definitely got a opportunity to learn their strengths and weaknesses.
At the end of the Combine the athletes and coaches were given the opportunity to speak with each other to
give a one on one personal impression.
USBC plans to host the College Combine again next year. It was without doubt a wonderful experience for
everyone in attendance.
Greater Houston USBC provides a newsletter which is printed at least twice each year. It is our goal to provide you with more up-todate information about the Houston bowling community rather than twice a year. In order to do this, we are asking that you help us
by e-mailing noteworthy accomplishments at your bowling center. This can include unusual spare pick-ups, such as the l-7-10, the 57-10, 7-8-9, etc. Things such as a triplicate 112 when the bowler’s average is 112, human interest stories, jokes, bowling cartoons, or
anything you feel is worth mentioning. We won’t promise we will print everything you send but if we feel it is of interest to our readers and with space in mind, we will make every attempt to print it.

Houston Youth participate in Pro-Am in Austin
By Carol Gardner
Several of our Houston area youth bowlers traveled to Dart Bowl in Austin two weeks ago to bowl in the 8th Annual Chad/Rick Payson Memorial Scholarship Youth Pro-Am Tournament, which was held in conjunction with the
PBA SW Region Young & Pratt Austin Open. As a participant of the pro-am, each youth bowler received a Brunswick bowling ball, a DV8 bowling towel, and a string backpack filled with some other miscellaneous items.
As always, the pro-am was a great success, filling up every lane in the house. The event was a Singles Tournament
where each youth participant bowled three regular games on the same pair of lanes. Also, the participants got to
bowl with 6 different pro bowlers, as the pros moved after every 5 frames. Thus, some of the pro bowlers they
were able to bowl with included Wes Malott, Chris Barnes, Mark Williams, Dino Castillo, and Randy Shewmake.
Afterwards, Chris Barnes & Wes Malott performed several trick shots to entertain the crowd. In one particular
trick, Houston youth bowler, Charlena Melnyk, sat in a chair on the lane while Chris Barnes threw a ball inbetween the legs of the chair. Thankfully, Chris is such a skilled bowler that Charlena was not in danger.
In conclusion, there was a huge turnout for the pro-am, and our youth bowlers had a great time. Many of them
bowled well, but await to see how they did once the final standings have been posted.

UH Bowler Rolls Perfect Score………..300 may not be a great SAT score, but in bowling it’s
PERFECT!
UH bowler and 4th year student Frank Papandrea rolled a perfect game last season while participating as
a member of the UH Bowling Team at the SWIBC (Southwest Intercollegiate Bowling Conference) Championship Tournament held at Cow Town Lanes in Ft. Worth, TX. Frank comes to the university from the New York
area where he previously bowled a 300 game while participating in his first year of collegiate bowling for William Paterson University. When not bowling, Frank is a full time student here at the University of Houston majoring in Hotel Restaurant Management.
The University of Houston bowling teams participate in the Southwest Intercollegiate Bowling
Conference which is currently composed of the following schools: The University of Houston, Texas Tech, Sam
Houston State University, West Texas A&M, Texas A&M, Louisisana State University, University of Louisiana
at Lafayette, Lady of Our Lake (San Antonio), North Texas State University, University of New Mexico, and
Southwestern Christian University. Interested bowlers qualify to represent the University of Houston by joining
the Cougar Bowling Club on campus and participating in their tryout process. The Cougar Bowling Club bowls
each Tuesday evening beginning at 7:00PM at their home lanes on campus, Cougar Lanes (lower level of the
UC). New members are welcomed regardless of skill level.
Taylor Ward and Todd Moreno took individual honors at the 35th Annual SWIBC 2011 Fall Singles
Classic held this past September 24 at Palace Lanes in Houston, TX. This singles tournament which is an annual
event to kick off the upcoming collegiate bowling season saw Taylor Ward three peat with wins in the 2009,
2010 and now in 2011. Ward qualified first in the ladies division with an 836 four-game total and defeated
Claudia Meeks 2-1 in a best of three game finals match. Todd Moreno, a University of Houston graduate student, qualified second in a field of 60 bowlers representing 13 schools, with a 830 four-game total and defeated
Anthony Lavery-Spahr 2-1 in a best of three game finals match. Meeks represented the University of LouisianaLafayette while Lavery-Spahr bowled for North Texas State University.
The SWIBC (South West Intercollegiate Bowling Conference) heads to Edmond, OK to compete in their
conference team tournament of the year on October 1, 2011.
Additional information on this year’s tournament and entry information for next year’s event can be obbained from William Schwehr, University of Houston, [email protected].
Deeds and Misdeeds
Val Smith, bowling in the Young at Heart League, carries a 148 average at age 91. Val gets a little frustrated because she “doesn’t bowl like she used to”. She approaches the line briskly and rolls a nice soft hook that seldom
misses the pocket. Great spare shooter.
Frank Hayward scores 250 by bowling a dutch 200 for 5 frames and a perfect game for 5 frames.
Congratulations to Mike Patterson who bowled his first 300. Mike is an Association Representative at Del Mar
Lanes and we look forward to seeing him each Thursday at the office.
Bowling in the TSUSBC Mixed Tournament in Plano/Garland, the Accords, besides having a great deal of fun
has some very good bowlers. Wayne McCray shot a 300 in the Team event on Sunday and Billy Clay bowled a
278 in the D/S event on Saturday.
