Dear reader,
Deerns values its employees. We help them grow intellectually
and develop their skills. An important tool for reaching this goal
is the Deerns Concept Studio (DCS). DCS provides training in
areas like conceptual thinking, conceptual designing and creative
problem solving. Every year a different group of employees
follows the DCS Winter Course. This ensures that the know­ledge
available in DCS is spread throughout the organization and it
provides a strong foundation for further expansion of this
knowledge. This way, we can provide our clients with the quality
they deserve.
We are very proud of the results that have been achieved with
DCS since 2005 and hope to celebrate many more successes
in the future. After all, DCS enables us to demonstrate that
Deerns does indeed know how to bring concepts to life!

DCS Mission
The mission of Deerns Concept Studio is to equip Deerns
employees and clients with the best possible skills in our
field of work. We achieve this by always looking at the bigger
picture; not just focusing on engineering problems but applying
a holistic view on building- and end-user-processes in general.
DCS strives for a creative knowledge base within the
organization.
Learning Goals
Specific learning goals for DCS Winter Course participants are:
• learn creative problem solving
• improve presentation skills
• improve visualization skills
• enhance effective communication
• improve methodical design
• stimulate creative innovation
• develop marketing skills
• improve English language skills

DCS Mindset
By setting up multiple courses and activities, DCS creates
a mindset of creative thinking and operating. Examples are
organizing Creative Problem Solving brainstorming sessions and
sketching workshops to improve visualization skills.
Creative thinking is at the base of innovation. Our field of work
requires (sustainable) innovation and Deerns is keen to make
this happen.
Collaboration
Participating in DCS improves people’s internal and external
networks. Internally, because it’s always good to know more
colleagues from different departments and branch offices. And
externally because guests are regularly invited to join the DCS
meetings. These guests, mostly architects, are also often Deerns’
partners in design competitions. This enhances sustainable
relationships between Deerns and the architects.

DCS Activities
• DCS Winter Course: Every winter, a new group of sixteen
DCS students follows the Winter Course. The course consists
of six lectures / workshops, each organized by the
participants themselves. In the Winter Course, we aim to:
–broaden our visionary approach focused on concept
development and creative innovation;
–develop building services, building physics and
architectural aspects as an integrated design;
–present new concepts and innovations;
–promote the internal distribution of this approach and
develop capacities in this field, create internal career
opportunities and external market value;
–develop and strengthen relationships between Deerns
and international leading architects.
• DCS Event: Successful cooperation is key in every project.
By hosting the DCS Event every year, Deerns strives to
enhance and stimulate the synergy between clients,
architects and building services engineers. All Deerns’
employees who have taken the Winter Course are invited
to this event as well as all the architects and other contacts
who are interested in DCS.
Workshops
Deerns Concept Studio
• Design Competitions: DCS regularly participates in design
competitions with architects. It has been demonstrated more
than once that combining knowledge in this way, the DCSway, greatly increases the chances of winning competitions.
• Participation in Deerns’ Projects: Because the DCS
mindset is spread throughout every department of the
company by over eighty ‘alumni’, the skills and goals that
DCS promotes are found in every Deerns project. In other
words, DCS is a significant contributor to the innovative
character of our projects.
