Friday
School for Successful Ranching
Sessions run from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and will be held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.
Selected sessions will be repeated on Saturday, April 1.
Friday-Only Sessions
Opening Session:
Making the Cow Herd
More Efficient by 2037
Speaker: Dr. Clay Mathis,
Professor and Director, King
Ranch Institute for Ranch
Management
Beef producers will continue to be asked
to provide more pounds of beef with fewer
resources. How will our cow herds, and our
ranches, have to adapt to meet the continued
demand for beef? Help us kick off the 2017
School for Successful Ranching with a look
ahead to 2037!
Introduction to Genomics
The use of genomic data is becoming a valuable tool
for cow-calf producers when making decisions on the
ranch. Join us for a session that will introduce you to
the world of genomics and help you determine how
this management tool can work for you.
Speaker: Dr. Jared Decker, University of Missouri
Rancher Panel: Using Genomics to Make
Management Decisions
Join fellow ranchers for a practical discussion on how
they incorporate the use of genomic data into their
management decisions on the ranch.
Impacting Beef Tenderness on the Ranch
National beef quality audits have shown beef
tenderness as an area where the beef industry can
improve the consumer’s eating experience. Tenderness
is a moderately heritable trait and can be affected both
by genetics and outside influences. Learn how you can
improve beef tenderness on the ranch.
Should Your Ranch Be Incorporated or Not?
Your choice of business entity can have a dramatic
impact on your ranch taxes, insurance and
liability. There are advantages and disadvantages
to sole proprietorships, limited liability companies,
partnerships and corporations. Learn what business
structure best fits your ranch.
Generational Transfer of the Ranch
The goal for many ranch owners is to leave the ranch
to the next generation. But when that time comes,
what does the next generation really inherit? Is the
inheritance a gift or a liability? How do you prepare
the next generation for the gift the inheritance is
intended to be? In this session, we will look at the
potential inheritance from the next generation’s
perspective and identify some of the primary items
that the current generation needs to prepare them for,
in order to make the transfer of the ranch a gift and
not an overwhelming liability.
Speakers: Dr. Robert Wells and Dan Childs, Samuel
Roberts Noble Foundation
Cow and Calf Health: Start at the Beginning
A preventive medicine approach to your herd health
plan can help save you time and money by reducing
the number of sick cattle to be treated. It can also keep
your cattle performing better, longer. This session will
help you develop a preventive herd health plan and
show how the judicious use of antibiotics can support
animal well-being.
Speaker: Dr. John Davidson, Boehringer-Ingelheim
Vetmedica, Inc.
Reproductive Diseases and Prevention
Herd health protocols should be based upon risk and
sound science, not tradition. This session will review
critically important reproductive diseases with an
emphasis on bovine trichomoniasis.
Speaker: Dr. John Davidson, Boehringer-Ingelheim
Vetmedica, Inc.
Speaker: Dr. Ty Lawrence, West Texas A&M University
Cubes: What’s Right for My Situation?
Genetic and Selection Strategies for Improving
Beef Quality
Supplementation strategies are an important part
of cow-calf operations. This session will focus on
providing general recommendations for which type of
cube or other supplement is right for your operation.
In addition to cubes, it will also cover how to utilize
blocks, liquid feeds, and other supplements in an
operation.
Most ranchers keep calving records and track how
their calves gain. Buyers and beef breed associations
provide more performance data. How can you use this
information? Learn how to incorporate genetic data
with your unique environment, consumer preferences
and the beef market to optimize your beef production.

Sessions below will be repeated on Friday and Saturday during the Expo.
Conformation Matters
What do you know about animal conformation and structure? Come learn how structural properties of a calf or cow
can have an impact on your herd and the animal’s health,
movement, and quality as a beef product. We will have a
live animal as part of this interactive demonstration.
Why Bull Fertility Matters
Bull fertility is a key to high reproductive rates. This session will demonstrate how bull fertility tests are conducted
and what to look for in a reproductively healthy bull. We’ll
have microscopes as well as frozen and fresh semen available for you to see how differences in reproductive quality
can have a big impact on your breeding herd.
Branding 101
Join TSCRA Special Rangers for this overview of how to properly brand and identify your
cattle and horses. They will discuss and demonstrate good brand design, branding techniques, and other tips to help you permanently identify your livestock.
Brush Busters
Live demonstrations of brush fighting
equipment plus individual plant treatment and timing for specific brush
species make this session a must-attend.
Come learn how to fight back against
cedar and mesquite, leading to rangelands that are more productive.

Cattle Raisers Expo
Cattle Handling Demonstrations in the Expo
Attendees will feel right at home as the Expo floor is transformed into a dirt arena, complete with cattle, panels, and cattle handling equipment. Open to all attendees, the cattle handling sessions are very popular and
the stands will be packed with your fellow ranchers. Sessions below will be repeated on Friday and Saturday
during the Expo.
What Are My Cattle Worth? Cattle Buyers Give Their Opinions
Have you ever wondered why two animals at the livestock market can look identical yet
bring very different prices? This is your opportunity to understand why. A panel of order
buyers and livestock marketing professionals will evaluate different types of cattle and give
you their opinions on what each is worth. Come learn how marketers are evaluating your
animals and how to top the market the next time you sell your cattle.
Safe Cattle Handling
Most ranching accidents happen when processing cattle. Learn the techniques and methods
that improve gathering, penning and working cattle on foot. When done properly, cattle
handling can be less stressful for both people and cattle. Ron Gill will bring his popular and
proven Stockmanship and Stewardship principles into the Expo and show attendees the
best way to handle cattle.
Selecting the Right Cattle Handling Equipment
Did you know that your choice of cattle handling equipment and panels can have a dramatic impact on your cattle and taxes? Come learn from the experts at Priefert Ranch Equipment as they show you how to right-size your cattle handling equipment to fit your operation. You’ll also learn how to plan for future expansion in your facility while minimizing
the tax consequences of permanent facilities.
Why Weight?
One of the most basic tools to improve herds is a simple scale. This simple upgrade to your
cattle management plan can help you better monitor cattle performance, make better decisions and ultimately lead to greater profit. You’ll see firsthand how easy it can be to weigh
cattle and set yourself up to gather the right kind of information on your cattle.

About the Mays Family Center, South Texas
Heritage Center and Witte Museum
The Mays Family Center features a majestic
10,000-square-foot space, which unites the historic
views of Broadway Street with the ancient panorama
of the San Antonio River. The adjoining Zachry Family
Acequia Gardens is the most historic spot on the Witte
campus and dates to 1719. The Acequia Madre, or
Alamo Acequia and Diversion Dam, were built by Mission Indians during the Spanish Colonial period. They
carried water through diversion ditches to the acequia,
traveling the same route as Broadway to the Presidio,
to irrigate crops near the San Antonio missions.

Closing Session Brunch & Cowboy Church
Closing General Session Brunch
April 2, 9:00 a.m.
Taya Kyle
Wife of the late U.S. Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle and
the author of the New York Times bestselling book,
American Wife
Love, Faith and Inspiration
In early 2013, Taya Kyle and her husband, Chris, were
the happiest they had ever been. Their decade-long
marriage had survived years of war that took Chris
away from Taya and their 2 children for agonizingly long stretches while he put his life on the line in
many major battles of the Iraq War. After struggling to
readjust to life out of the military, Chris had found new
purpose in redirecting his lifelong dedication to service
to supporting veterans and their families. His story is
told in his book and the Academy Award-winning motion picture, American Sniper. Their love had deepened
and, most special of all, their family was whole, finally.
Then the unthinkable happened. On Feb. 2, 2013, Chris and his friend Chad Littlefield were killed while
attempting to help a troubled veteran. The life Chris and Taya fought so hard to build together was shattered.
In an instant, Taya became a single parent, a widow, a young woman facing the rest of her life without the
man she loved.
Three years later, Taya has found renewed meaning and connection to Chris by advancing their shared
mission of “serving those who serve others,” particularly military and first-responder families. She and the
children embrace a new future that honors the past and looks forward with hope, gratitude and joy.
Mrs. Kyle will be signing copies of her book, American Wife, immediately after the brunch.
Proceeds from this session will benefit the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation. The mission of the Chris Kyle Frog
Foundation (CKFF) is to honor God, country and those who serve by providing experiences that strengthen
military and first responder marriages and families.

TSCRA Law Enforcement Silent Auction in the Expo
Opens Friday, March 31
Bidding Closes Saturday, April 1, at 5:30 p.m.
The TSCRA Law Enforcement Silent Auction helps to raise funds for the advanced training the special rangers need to remain current in law enforcement techniques. Funds also provide the special rangers with better

Generous TSCRA members and supporters donate items that ranchers want and need — stock trailers, livestock feed, bits, spurs, jewelry, artwork and more.
The TSCRA special rangers are solely supported by TSCRA member dues and do not receive state or federal
funding. Take advantage of this fundraiser auction and the opportunity to bid on some great items for your
ranch and family and support the TSCRA law enforcement division.

Beware of Housing Pirates - We would like to make you aware that there are various companies, going by a number of
names (such as Global Housing Services or Convention Housing Unlimited, etc.), that are representing themselves as the
housing vendor for the Cattle Raisers Convention or authorized by TSCRA.
These companies reach out to exhibitors and attendees and disguise themselves as our housing entity. They are claiming
they can get better rates or they often use pressure tactics implying a housing shortage or impending deadline. They are
careful what they claim in writing and often want to make arrangements by phone to avoid a paper trail. Beware of such
unsolicited or unofficial housing claims because they often confuse and disappoint attendees and exhibitors and can lead
to hidden penalties or no reservations at check-in as well.
We strongly recommend you do not book housing from any company that calls you directly. We do not release attendee
names to any third parties to contact attendees for housing.
Cancellation, Refund and Substitution Policy: All registration cancellation and refund requests must be made in writing by Monday, March 20,
2017. A refund of all fees will be given for cancellations received by March 20, 2017. No refunds will be granted for requests received or postmarked on or after March 21, 2017.
Transfers of registrations are permitted prior to the convention by written request to [email protected]. On-site transfers must be accompanied
by proof of the original confirmation letter or email. The individual submitting the transfer request is responsible for all financial obligations and
balances due associated with that substitution. Badge sharing, splitting, and reprints are strictly prohibited. TSCRA regrets that refunds will not
be given for no-shows.
Early and Advance Registration Payments: All early registrations must be paid in full by Wednesday, March 22, 2017. If full payment for a
registration is not received by March 22, 2017, the registration will be canceled. If the attendee registers after their registration is canceled due to
non-payment, the attendee will be charged the registration fee assessed for the new registration date. All online registrations made after March 22,
2017, will require a credit card to complete the registration.
Special Offers/Discount Codes: Use of discount codes is only valid at the time of the initial purchase/registration. Non-members using a discount
code are not eligible for discounts in conjunction with their registration. Refunds will not be authorized for existing registrations where the special
offer was received after the initial purchase.
Discount codes cannot be applied to already reduced/discounted registrations. Limit one (1) special offer/discount code per registration.
Consent to Use Photographic Images: Registration and attendance at or participation in TSCRA meetings and other activities constitutes an
agreement by the registrant or attendee to TSCRA’s use and distribution (both now and in the future) of the registrant or attendee’s image.
Confirmation: If you register online, you will immediately receive an electronic confirmation of your registration from TSCRA. If you fax or mail
your registration form and do not receive a confirmation letter within 10 business days, please contact TSCRA at 800-242-7820 or registration@

The first time we attended the Cattle Raisers Convention, my wife Karen and I
learned how to control mesquite on our ranch with techniques that we still use today.
At every convention we have had fun, made lifetime friends and have taken new
knowledge and information back to our ranch.
We invite you and your family to join us to have the same experiences.
Join us March 31 to April 2, in San Antonio, to learn about managing and
protecting your land and cattle operation and to enjoy the fellowship of the ranching
community. If you take care of land or livestock in Texas and the Southwest, then
this event is for you.
For as little as $90, you will have access to instructional classes and cattle
handling demonstrations, to the largest ranching Expo of the year and more.
Come to hear national leaders who will inform us about the issues facing the
agriculture economy, globally and domestically. Learn from beef industry experts
who will teach management techniques that you can start using right away. Be
inspired by the heroic life story of Taya Kyle, our Sunday brunch speaker.
And have fun at the Cattle Raisers Dinner and Dance. Once again, we’ll be treated to
Jake Hooker and the Outsiders while we enjoy the great surroundings of the new Mays
Family Center at the Witte Museum.
It is my privilege to serve as president of this great association and to invite you to
attend the Cattle Raisers Convention. Come learn, come shop, come grow, and don’t forget
to come have fun.
Sincerely,
Richard Thorpe, Winters
