whether the IVC Marching Grey Ghosts win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the
task at hand.”

Welcome
The band program at IVC high school forms a vital and important part of the total high school life. The
band represents a large, colorful, visible, and highly disciplined segment of the school. The
performance of the band at concerts, parades, contests, and sporting events as well as many
community events, adds a great deal of color and life to the IVC high school and community.
The main emphasis of the IVC Band program is on musicianship as well as individual growth.
Achieved through hard work, it is the pride of a job well done that makes our efforts worthwhile. The
success of the organization will lead to the success of the individual.
This band handbook is intended to provide students and parents, information that will aid in a
successful experience with the IVC Band program. It presents the policies and intents of the program
and attempts to answer common questions that students and parents might have. It is our hope that
students and parents will be aided in their experiences during their years as members of the IVC H.S.
Band.
“Teamwork is what the IVC band is all about. We are not a part of this organization for individual
attention. We succeed as a one spirit, one mind
and one family.”
Mission Statement
The mission of the Illinois Valley Central High School Instrumental Department is to promote a musical
appreciation, knowledge and participation though study and performance of quality instrumental literature. A
performance class has its own kind of content that has value, demand rigor, and is worthy of academic study. It is
taught because it is one very important way or experiencing the art of music, an art that will help the students
develop a finer understanding of themselves and their humanity. It is the belief of the IVC instrumental music
directors that this mission is accomplished through the indoor and outdoor ensemble experiences.

IVC MARCHING GREY GHOST BAND CAMP
REGRISTRATION FORM
Each summer for the past 36 years the IVC Marching Grey Ghosts have traveled out of town for a week to go to
band camp and learn they’re competitive marching band show. The camp is located on the beautiful 4-H
Memorial Campgrounds at Allerton Park, just west of Monticello, Il. (Maps/Directions located on
www.ivcbands.com)
Dates for this camp are Friday, July 29th through Wednesday, Aug. 3rd, 2016. Students will be transported,
housed, fed, educated, insured and cared for the entire week at a cost of $250 per child. All remaining
information regarding this camp week will come out in midsummer.
Camp is a requirement for those who intend on participating in the marching band. Simply put, those not at
camp for any reason will not be in the show. This is a very demanding activity and only those that seriously
intend on pursuing excellence should participate. All music will be handed out by our Memorial Day Camp dates
and must be memorized by the end of camp.
Please note the band calendar in your booster’s newsletter or on www.ivcbands.com for summer rehearsal dates
and times. A hard copy of the schedule was given to every student when they received their music folders.
Please fill out the attached form and return it to Mr. Chapman at IVC High School no later than May 27th. The
balance is due by July 22nd. If you want your camp fees deducted from your child’s band ledger, please indicate
that on the form. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Mr. Chapman at the school (274-5481) or our
band booster president.
IVC Marching Band Camp Registration (Please detach)
My child will be attending the IVC Band Camp, Friday, July 29th through Wednesday, Aug. 3rd, 2016 and the first
installment is enclosed. Please make checks payable to the IVC Band Boosters and please put your child’s name
on the memo line of the check for bookkeeping purposes.

IVC MARCHING GREY GHOST BAND UNIFORM NEEDS FORM
**Forms are due by May 27th so we can order these items in time for local events**
There are some miscellaneous fees that cover the following:
$80
New member package and uniform deposit (Includes cleanings of uniform/Parade shirt/shorts/new
garment bag/1 pair of gloves
$25/$35
Shoe option – select either new or used option
$50
Returning member uniform charge covering all cleaning fees and includes one pair of gloves
$20
Reed fee - Woodwinds only that need reeds through marching season
$20
Drum sticks/heads fee (Drum line/front ensemble only)
The reed/percussion fees cover the purchasing of all the reeds/sticks over the course of the entire year and only
apply to those participating in those specific areas.
The activity fee asked of the district does not go directly to the band. The fee offsets the cost of transportation and
other district costs related to this and other district areas.
The camp fee is non-refundable once the student has paid the first installment of the registration fee on
May 27th. There are several reasons for this disclaimer. The drill is written for each member and we are
paying for every spot per page on the field. That process starts May 2016 and everyone is locked into all fifty
pages of drill. It takes countless hours to redesign the program for the drill designer and the IVC band staff to
reteach each spot seventy plus times. It causes lots of confusion and stress. We encourage your students to
understand this hard work really pays off by the end of the season.

What to Bring to Band Camp
1. Any kind of hat, sunglasses and water container that will protect you from the powerful sun, humidity and heat. We
spend a lot of time exposed to these stressful elements and these items will keep you comfortable and safe. A water
container can be kept on the side of the field as we march. Put your name on it!! This way it can be easily
identified as well as save money on purchasing disposable cups. In fact, we would like to eliminate using those cups
all together, so please make an effort to obtain a container.
2. Lots and lots of sunscreen!!! You will need it immediately when you get to camp. Someone
always seems to forget, then gets burnt and is out for the rest of the rehearsals. This puts us
way behind.
3. Comfortable tennis shoes!!! Absolutely NO FLIP FLOPS or Sandals. Anything that does not
support you ankles and feet is unacceptable. There are bugs, rocks, sticks, etc. that are on that
field and could lead to injury, which again, causes us to fall behind.
4. Proper and comfortable clothing. Nothing fancy. Just enough for 5 ½ days. Shorts and light
colored T-shirts are appropriate. A sweatshirt, light jacket and one long jean/sweat pant will work
for the cool nights. Remember, you are limited to one suitcase and one carry on bag. A swimsuit
is optional since there is the green pond to swim in when a lifeguard is on duty. An extra pair of
shoes would be wise to take too. The grass is very dewy in the mornings and shoes can get
damp.
5. ABSOLUTELY NO COOLERS ON DISTRICT VECHICLES PERIOD.
6. Sheets, blankets, pillows or a sleeping bag. It can get quite chilly at night. In fact, some years it
has been downright cold. These items can be carry on.
7. Only one stereo/sound system per cabin. A couple of fans to keep the air moving. There is a
huge mounted fan in each cabin.
8. Soap, shampoo, towels and other necessary toiletries. Lip balm (DCT is excellent) Lots of good
quality bug spray to keep those mosquitoes away at night. We rehearse well past dusk and
those bugs like to bother us.
9. A pencil, clip clothespins so music doesn’t fly away in the wind, proper tools for your instrument
to work properly (oils, reeds etc.) and music folder! Memorize as much of your music prior to
camp. Take it slow and steady and you should be fine.
10. If you are under any prescribed medications, please let the chaperones know so we can be sure
they are taken properly and on time. All medications must be put in a zip lock bag with the
members name on it and given to head chaperone / medical person prior to leaving IVC unless
parent/guardian gives permission for the member to self administer the medication.
11. If you use an inhaler, epipen, any joint brace (even if you do not use it all the time) please bring it
with you to camp.
12. Money for treats, extra Gatorade, etc. You can carry your own snacks in your carry on bag. A
grocery run is usually done by a chaperone in Wed. for needed items. We also have extra water,
Gatorade and treats to sell.
13. A positive attitude! Be prepared to work hard so at the end of our season, we can reap the
benefits of our hard work! We are IVC!
What Not to Bring to Band Camp
The following items are forbidden from the 4-H Allerton Park Camp grounds. If any drugs, nicotine or
drugs are found on your member’s possession/luggage, we will call and ask you to make arrangements
to remove your member from camp immediately. The administration will be contacted and the activity
code will be enforced and consequences will be applied. We have had this happen to two members
over the past 33 years. One brought tobacco products and the other a quarter cup of alcohol in a
Gatorade bottle. Both students agreed it wasn’t’ worth it. We will check every area of the camp,
luggage and cabins.
1. Firearms, paintball guns, fireworks.
2. Pornography and this includes music with inappropriate lyrics. If we hear inappropriate lyrics
referring to fowl language or inappropriate behavior, the music device will be confiscated and
given back when we return to school on Friday afternoon.
3. Air conditioning units, microwaves or other items to cook in the cabins.
4. Anything else that we, the camp staff/Chaperones, determine to be harmful to all the members
of this program.
5. Behavior not conductive to our camp situation will result in the expulsion from camp and a
meeting with the school administration will be recommended. This includes a member leaving
the campgrounds at night. We cannot tolerate those that endanger themselves by wandering
into the strange woods at night.
6. If any vandalism occurs within the cabins, camp buildings or other members things, the parents
of those responsible will be notified and the student will be charged for the replacement and/or
repair by the U of I 4-H Allerton Park office.
Other Important Information about Camp to Consider
1. Please make an effort to eat all the meals at camp. Even if you dislike an item, please eat other
things that are offered. EVERYONE is required to meet in the dining hall during Breakfast, lunch
and dinner. We have important information to give at that time. We need everyone there.
2. If you do send extra foods/beverages, make sure it has good nutritional value! We have several
students each year ignore this request and get sick. This causes us again to fall behind and lose
valuable time. If soda or junk food is the min staple of their nutritional intake, WE ALL LOSE.
This is a very intense week and allowing something that can be controlled cause us to fall
behind is tragic.
3. Gatorades, raisins, granola bars, canned fruit, applesauce and other creative foods work real
well. Soda will not replenish the body’s nutritional needs that you need to sustain you through
the entire week.
4. I understand cell phones are a necessity, but our focus cannot be on dealing with rumors. We
are asking that you keep your cell phone at home. If not, we will ask you to use it only on breaks.
We do not want parents calling staff/chaperones saying their student wants to come home
because they are home sick or tired. We all have those moments, but our goal is to bond. Part of
this experience is to learn to deal with hardships and become a band family.
Band Camp
The IVC marching band has had band camp at Allerton 4-H camp in Monticello, IL for over 35 years.
Monticello is located just west of Champaign-Urbana off of route 72. (Maps are always available prior to
our departure for camp in the band room or you can go on our website (www.ivcbands.com). Outside
the grounds of the 4-H camp is Allerton mansion and gardens. It is an amazing setting for our students
to explore during our days at camp.
Several parents are volunteer chaperones and will keep an eye on your student. Usually one of the
parents has a medical background and will dispense medications and other important safety essentials.
If there is anything they need to know about your student’s health, please make sure to put that
information on the required medical form that is required prior to departing for camp.
Parents are welcome to come down on Sunday or Friday morning. If you do plan to come down to
camp on Sunday or Friday to drop off or pick up large items, please depart prior to dusk or arrive on
Friday around 10:30 am to support our students. The gates to the park are locked at dark, so parents
need to leave before dark.
Students will be encouraged to drink lots of water or sports drinks (Gatorade). If we are playing music,
it is asked that students not drink sugar drinks because it will damage the instruments over time.
The cabins are not air-conditioned. Although there is a large fan in each cabin, it is recommended that
they bring a clip on fan for their individual use.
The activity code will be strictly enforced. If a student breaks the code, you will need to make
arrangements to pick your child up from camp immediately.
Only extreme circumstances are warranted to miss band camp and the individual is responsible for
learning his or her music and drill in a very short time frame.
The camp is designed to make sure we establish a great start to our year. It is mandatory to attend this
week of activities. We grow and become a “band” in a very short period of time. We strive for
excellence at camp and work very long days. We also have down time too. We also let the student
have time to bond, get to know their sections and explore the gorgeous grounds that the park has to
offer.
Cell phones are not to be used while we are in a rehearsal setting. They are to be totally turned off, not
even on the vibration setting. If this policy is violated, we will remove the phone until rehearsal is
completed. If the violation continues, we will remove the phone until the end of the day’s activities. The
reason we ask you to honor this request is so we can be at the best we can be and minimize
distractions that could cause us to suffer.
Competitions
Competitions are exciting and a lot of fun! Don’t miss out on your child’s performances!!! In fact, IVC
band parents have the reputation for being there to support their band. Also, many alumni parents and
students also come back to support the band. The more, the merrier. The competition dates vary every
year, so watch your newsletter and web site (www.ivcbands.com) for dates, maps and information
regarding each competition.
The web site is a great tool to make sure you receive the itineraries for each event. It is your
responsibility to understand what is going on. Maps will also be provided so you can get to the
competition sites early to cheer us on.
It is mandatory for the students to ride the bus to all parades and competitions.
If they are in a sporting activity related to the school, they are asked to meet us at the location as soon
as they can. Arrangements need to be made and cleared with Mr. Chapman. It is vital that all students
in that situation make the best effort to make the performance since the entire band is counting on their
participation. We need everyone!!!
If the student wants to ride home with family, It is very important that she / he sign out on their bus
before they leave any band event. We must know before we leave a contest site of their where a bouts
so we do not wait unnecessarily to get word of their location.
Illinois October weather can very unpredictable. Be prepared for the elements. If the weather is very
cold, students might want to wear long underwear and/or thick socks that are not visible outside their
uniform that does not hinder their performances or appearance.
ISU, BOA and U of I are major competitions. The competitions are usually long days for our students.
Make sure they discuss their options and make sure they have money for food. If time permits, they
can also tour the campuses once we have completed our competitions.
ISU has a prelim and finals format. Last year it was one ticket price regardless of how long you stayed.
In the past needed to decide to purchase a prelims or a combo ticket, which includes prelims and finals
and was cheaper. If the band does not win their class, they will not perform in the evening finals
competition. If they do make the finals and you do not purchase a combo ticket, you will need to line up
outside the stadium a.s.a.p. Additionally, if you purchase the combo ticket and the band makes it into
finals, get in line for seating because the stadium is cleared after prelims and you will need to find a
seat again.
Competitions
Videos and photos are available for you to purchase from BOA events, ISU and U of I. There is a full
ensemble picture taken as well as a section picture. If you are interested, ask your student to bring
home the order forms for you to fill out and then decide what to order. There are also individual proofs
taken of the students as they were performing. They usually are sent to the school and students have
the opportunity to take them home to look at before ordering. You can go on line and order through that
vane.
If the band competes out of the area, especially in the Chicago land area, the price of admission may
be more expensive than our local events.
Judging at each contest can have a different system or number of judges. Each panel of judges is
different and the scoring can be different. If you would like to learn and try to understand the process,
come to a booster meeting and we will try to figure it out. Our staff is interested in what the judges have
to say about our performance, however, we stress that the outcome of our performance is what we felt
like coming off that field, not a number.
Please understand that every student from every band is there to do his or her best. Please support
them and again, please do not knock other programs while in the stands. They may be right behind or
in front of you and want to represent our school and community in high regard.
FOOTBALL GAMES
The band performs prior to the game (pre-game) and stays for the halftime show. The pregame
consists of getting the crowd fired up and supporting the football team. The half time show is a great
practice section for us. We can evaluate our marching and music and determine our goals for the next
rehearsal.
Students participating on the Freshman/Sophomore football teams, pon poms, cheerleaders and spirits
are expected to march our half time show. They are more than welcome to wear their respected
uniforms during the performance. They are responsible for making sure their instrument gets to and
from the band room and field.
If we have performances on the following Saturday, we will need to load the truck after the half time
performance. We could use the help from parents to make sure the uniforms are hung properly and
that the instruments are loaded on the truck.
If you are on the homecoming court, we ask that you participate with us at half time. You are excused
from the pre game performances that evening. You will also be excused from the homecoming parade.
IVC Band Trips
TRIPS
Occasionally, people ask “Why trips?” Trips are chosen for their educational value, the “esprit de corps”
that is an integral component of team building, and as a reward for all of the hard work required
throughout the year. Trips are not mandatory of all students. However, all students want to go on band
trips and should go if at all possible. Band trips are an excellent investment in the student’s overall
band experience. We travel every two years. One trip is a “short” trip that is usually around a long
weekend and one “long” trip that is around a week. The cost of a short trip is usually $500 or below
(Example: Chicago/Michigan/Iowa/Missouri - Midwest) and a long trip can run $1000 - $2200
depending on the destination (Example: Washington DC/Phoenix/San Diego/Florida).
MINI CAMP/SUMMER REHEARSALS
Spring camp and summer rehearsals take place in May, June, and July. They are typically held on
Tuesday evenings from 5:00 to 9:00. These rehearsals are for all experienced band and color guard
members, with the addition of in-coming freshman, transfer students, and upperclassmen that will be
taking marching band in the coming fall for the first time. The inclusion of newcomers gives them the
opportunity to experience marching band alongside our seasoned graduating seniors. This also gives
our seniors one last chance to appreciate the joy of marching and recognize their own level of expertise
as they instruct and become relied upon by the newest members of the band. Check for current times
and dates at www.ivcbands.com.
PRE-CAMP
Pre-camp is the set of rehearsals that take place in August at the beginning of the marching band
season. Pre-camp is held at IVC High School during the one week leading up to Band Camp. Typically,
we rehearse Monday through Friday from five until nine in the evening. We spend these hours working
on basic marching style and rehearsing the music selected for the fall competitions, up to and including
some memorization. Toward the end of pre-camp, we try to begin work on the show itself, teaching
band and color guard students how to “learn” a show.
BAND CAMP
Band camp is the most important event of the year for the Marching Band. This is where students learn
the proper technique for performing the year’s show. This is also where the band begins to take on its
personality. Band camp is a week of grueling rehearsals, sunburns, blisters, and muscle aches where
you never knew you had muscles. It is also a week during which the students, staff, and chaperones
begin to make life-long friends.
Band camp is an enigma. Some students begin the week wanting to call home daily to ask their parents
to get them out of there. By Friday, those same students are asking where the week has gone. Go to
camp with a realistic attitude. Expect to be worked very hard. Go to camp with an open mind. You are
there for the music, but you are also about to join the largest “family” of your life. Most importantly, go to
camp with a sense of pride and confidence. You are about to begin a journey that does not end until a
chilly day in November.
FAQ
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I participate in the fall marching band show if I did not participate during the summer?
You cannot march in the fall marching show if you miss band camp. Only under extreme extenuating
circumstances can this happen. We start the show in the summer and spend a lot of time on basics.
We have shortened the summer practice time to give students more free time and feel that the summer
time requirement is as minimal as possible. We do understand that there are vacations planned during
the summer months, but hope that summer rehearsals are attended.
How much does Marching Band Cost?
Approximate costs for marching band include: $10 parade shirt, $10 used shoes $20 new, $3 per pair
of gloves, $10 garment bag, $250 band camp, $50 dry cleaning deposit.
What are the additional costs during the marching band season?
$10 Food monies per event if we leave at extremely early times for shows
$25 Band DVD – Can be purchased at ISU or U of I.
$500 or below:
Small trip every other year (Example: Chicago/Michigan/Iowa/Missouri - Midwest)
$500-$2200:
Large trip every other year (Example: Washington DC/Phoenix/San Diego/Hawaii)
Can a student receive P.E. credit for marching band?
YES!!! Junior and Senior Marching band students will receive PE credit for fall marching band. The
student must opt out of PE when scheduling their classes.
What will take place at band camp?
This period of time is a concentrated 5 day period for all students to receive help not only from the
directors but from additional staff members brought in to provide individual and small group training.
The entire field show will be taught. Attendance at band camp is not optional!
Should I clean the uniforms?
NO! Obviously, they should be cleaned any time they have been soiled. However, the boosters take
care of this process to insure a speedy return. We also get a break on the mass cleaning and we would
be delighted if you could volunteer some of your valuable time to help the uniform team hang them
back up when they arrive. All uniform parts should be dry cleaned only! There is a uniform deposit
requested every year to take care of this expense.
Is the band grade factored into the GPA?
Yes, the band grade is factored into the Grade Point Average. We work extremely hard on challenging
music, which includes tough rhythms (math), foreign language (Italian), history (US and International),
reading skills, science skills (sound waves) and many other areas that make a well-rounded student.
Can I be in the band program and not be in marching band?
Yes. Each year there are several students, because of various reasons or preferences, who chose not
to be in the marching band program. The marching band is one part of the total band program, which
includes Wind Symphony, Symphonic, Concert, Jazz and Percussion classes. There is offered a fall
concert band in the first quarter for those that wish to perform indoors only.
What is ILMEA?
ILMEA stands for Illinois Music Educators Association. All students can audition and participate in
district and state level IMEA events. It is hard work, but the top 10% of all musicians in the state of
Illinois are showcased at the convention at the end of January in the areas of concert, jazz, composition
and choir.
FAQ
What is competitive marching band?
Competitive marching bands often take on a chosen identity or style that they present from year to
year. IVC has chosen classic band, contemporary and orchestral transcription literature as our
direction. We strive to be progressive and creative in our presentation of this style. Each year, we
design a show that places a very high level of demand on the individual performer. We feel that this
approach best allows our students to learn and grow to their full potential. This approach to competition
also makes for some long hours and places great responsibility on all of our marching band members.
It is because of our approach, however, that we have developed the reputation for excellence that we
now have, that and because we have such hard-working and talented kids!
Scoring at Competitions?
Scoring a marching band performance these days is quite a complicated task. We begin with the three
main sections of the band: winds, percussion, and guard. These three elements are equally important
and figure into all of the captions. Generally speaking, there are two areas of judging: musical and
visual. Music accounts for 60% of a band’s score and visual counts for 40%. However, the two areas
overlap frequently. A very effective or exciting drill move during an intense musical moment might
influence a “music effect” score and vice versa.
In general, what you see and hear as an audience does not always translate to what score the band
receives. Judges are trained to look for the smallest inconsistencies in a band’s performance, asking
themselves questions like how high the students are lifting their toes and whether their upper bodies
are aligned at the same angles. The bottom line is that they are trained to be thorough in their
evaluation. Judges do add a “human” factor to competition scores. The scoring is not always cut and
dried and things get subjective. This is a flaw in the judging of art that will never be resolved.
What items should I make sure my student shouldn’t wear to a competition?
It is the student’s responsibilities to bring his/her complete uniform to all performances. When our band takes
the field, it is our goals to have the students present a likeness in appearance. The following guidelines help to
achieve this result: No nail polish, sunglasses or jewelry, including watches and earrings are permitted. Hair
should be tucked in under the shako. Bobby pins and hair bands should be used where necessary. Please
avoid muscle shirts or cut offs due to preparation and perfumes getting into the uniform!
What and who is the front ensemble crew (pit)?
The front ensemble crew helps carry the equipment on and off of the field at the competitions, repair
and build equipment as needed, and transport props when necessary. We need parental and sibling
volunteers every time we take the field.
Where can I get show information?
Itineraries and maps are usually available before each scheduled competition. The information is also
posted on the band website as well as the charms program as soon as it is made available. Specific
competition information is usually complete one week before the upcoming show. If you need times,
feel free to go to the website or call.
When to arrive or Where to sit at shows?
IVC parents try to arrive at competitions early enough to get a block of seats together. The best seats
are as close to the 50-yard line as possible and as high in the stands as is available. It is always
exciting for the kids when they enter the field to see their block of parents seated together. Seats are
always general admission at shows.
Can my student ride the bus to the competitions and parades?
Students must ride the buses to all band competitions and parades. However, if you are traveling from
another activity or sporting event, please talk to Mr. C so we can have an idea when you will arrive to
the competition. If you are at a show and want your student(s) to ride home with you, please check out
with the bus driver.
FAQ
What is competition etiquette?
Competition etiquette is very important. Please do not talk during another band’s performances as well
as and entering or leaving a seat while a band is performing (just like a concert). Do not cross in front of
people to take your seat or in any way obstruct anyone’s view when a band is performing. In general,
treat other bands and their parents and supporters the way that you would like them to treat us. NEVER
say anything that is negative about other bands (even our biggest rivals) during competitions. Their
parents may be right in front of you.
Can I only be in the jazz program?
The jazz program is open to all individuals that can perform proficiently on the appropriate jazz
instrumentation. In addition, there is a prerequisite to be a member of an indoor fall and spring
ensemble during the semester of each jazz band. If there is a scheduling issue where it is absolutely
impossible to take a performance based class, the situation will be reviewed. Since jazz bands meet
after or before school, no grades are given. There are several festivals and concerts put on during the
year to showcase all the hard work the members are putting into this American art form.
What do we do about family summer vacations and camps?
We encourage students to try to schedule activities around the band schedule but we realize conflicts
will occur. The only summer activity that is absolutely mandatory is the band camps during late July
and early August.
What will take place at band camp?
This period of time is a concentrated 5 day period for all students to receive help not only from the
directors but from additional staff members brought in to provide individual and small group training.
The entire field show will be taught. Attendance at band camp is not optional!
What should be worn under my band uniform?
You should wear a white T-shirt, possibly the band T-shirt and light-weight shorts. Long johns are
encouraged during cold weather performances. Uniforms will be changed in the parking lot so modesty
is encouraged. NO JEANS or hoodies are allowed under the uniform–period! Tall black socks are
mandatory for all students. If you forget you will be charged a fee to your account.
What do section leaders do?
Section leaders are students assigned to individual sections who will serve as the leaders of that
section. They are selected on their musical and leadership abilities. They will conduct sectionals and
social activities throughout the season and will work closely with the drum-majors and the Director.
What do the Drum Majors do?
The Drum Majors are the field conductors for the marching band. They help rehearse, stretch the band
before physical activities and conduct the performance of the band. They are responsible for the esprit
de corps of the band and help to solve any personnel problems that occur during the season. They
have major teaching responsibilities concerning marching style.
If my student chooses not to march as a 9th grader, can they still join as sophomores?
Yes. Marching as a 9th grader is totally optional and we would hope they would join with us in the 10th
grade.
What is the time commitment for Marching Band?
A complete calendar is included with this handbook. Attendance at rehearsals is crucial to our success
and any absences must have prior approval. Time commitment is similar to involvement on any major
sporting team. Color Guard and Percussion will have additional practices.
Parade, Sectional and Show Shirts
Parades can be very hot in the summer months. We participate in many parades throughout the late
summer (Kewanee and Toluca) and when the temperature reaches 90 degrees or higher, we require
the members to wear the parade t-shirts and black shorts. If these items are ruined or lost, a new
item must be purchased. Also, if the parades occur during the months when the uniforms are not
available, we also require the members to wear the parade t-shirt/short combination. Orders are taken
between June and August.
Sectional shirts are optional to the member. They are usually designed by the students and must be
approved by Mr. Chapman. These shirts really unite the sections and are fun to wear during school
days, especially leading up to a marching performance. Some section shirts are wacky, but must be in
good taste.
The commemorative show t-shirts/sweatshirts are also optional and ordered during the marching
band season. They are designed by the members of the band and tend to have the show theme
incorporated into the design. Parents have also been known to purchase them and wear them to the
show to support their band. They are also nice keepsakes for the students to wear at college to show
off their high school alma mater.
Band members are to change into their uniforms prior to the football game or show competitions. At
some competitions, we may already be in half uniform, pants, black socks and black shoes on prior to
our departure to save time.
The members have changed in the band room, parking lots and fields. There is no privacy when the
students change in or out of their uniforms and need to know that all can see what they are wearing
underneath the uniform. It is recommended that they wear our nylon athletic shorts and the parade tshirt (section shirts are also acceptable).
Sleeveless t-shirts, jeans, sweat pants and sweaters are not appropriate for the uniform and do not
protect from perspiration. If a student is known to wear one of these items, they will be given a parade
t-shirt.
Guard competition uniforms change from year to year. We will notify the members when the color
guard caption head selects the design.
Parade Information
August and September parades can be unbearably hot, humid and uncomfortable.
If the temperature reaches 90 degrees or higher, we will march in parade t-shirts and shorts.
While the spectators are wearing shorts and t-shirts, band members are wearing full uniforms,
marching and performing at a high level.
Band members need to eat and drink plenty of fluids prior to the parades. We will always have water on
hand for the members to use before and after the parade.
During the parade, volunteer parents will walk alongside the band and continue to hydrate the
members. They use spray bottles to keep the students moving along.
It is very important that the students hydrate after the parade too. We provide plenty of opportunities to
make sure the students have a pleasant and safe parade experience.
If you attend a parade we are participating in, it is suggested that you park at the end of the parade so
you can easily find your band member. The parades can be long so it is best to find your band member
at the end of the parade.
If you take pictures of the band during parades, please forward them to our web master. We would love
to get them up on the website to highlight our achievements!
