The Magna Carta`s Journey to Singapore: History and the Rule of Law

The Magna Carta’s Journey to Singapore:
History and the Rule of Law
Invitation
To celebrate the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta, the Hereford
Cathedral Magna Carta is coming to Singapore where it will be
displayed at the Supreme Court. In the lead up to this event, NUS
Law is convening a discussion on the history and ongoing
significance of the Magna Carta to the rule of law in general and to
Singapore in particular.
In a 1998 decision, for example, Singapore’s Court of Appeal traced
the origin of Article 12 of the Constitution, which guarantees equality
before the law, to the 40th article of the Magna Carta, drafted some
eight centuries earlier. This panel discussion will consider the
Magna Carta in its historical context, its impact on the rule of law,
and its ongoing relevance to Singapore today.
Chaired by Justice Judith Prakash, the panel will peel away the
myths, mantras and misconceptions behind the Magna Carta,
revealing an instrument that was not born to greatness but instead
had greatness thrust upon it.
