9th Grade -Summer Assignments- 2016 1 of 2 1) Read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot 2) Keep a quote journal with a minimum of 3 quotes per chapter for each chapter. Each reaction/reflection should be a paragraph in length. Journals should include quotes from the book and reactions/reflections about those quotes. They should not include summaries. Instead, select quotes that are engaging and meaningful to not only the plot, but the author’s purpose. In reflecting, analyze the quote and explain how it relates to theme/character development/author's purpose. When done correctly, the journal should highlight the significance of the quote and how it relates to the novel as a whole. EXAMPLE Quote (page number) “The pigs did not actually work, but directed and supervised the other. With their superior knowledge it was natural that they should assume the leadership…” (Animal Farm, p.35) Reaction/Reflection Sounds like the pigs are getting ready to put one over on the other animals. How can the others be so naïve? The pigs have said everyone should work, but they aren’t working. So everyone on this farm already isn’t equal. This reminds me of the crowds of commoners in Julius Caesar. Are uneducated people really fit to govern themselves? It doesn’t look that way here. 3) Maintain your journal in an electronic format so ultimately it may be submitted via schoology. 4) This assignment will count as your first major project grade for the marking period, worth 100 points. 9th Grade Summer 2016 Reading Assignment #2 of 2 1) Read The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, by William Kamkwamba. 2) Be prepared to post to 4 discussion board prompts on Schoology throughout the summer.
