SBA 4 Measuring

Phases 9 & 10
Measuring
Introduction of Math
Vocabulary
Measuring
Concrete Introduction of Key Vocabulary
Note: A vocabulary illustration is provided, in this Unit, for each of the key words.
Celsius
Fahrenheit
Show the students a map of the world; identify
Sweden on the map. Introduce Anders Celsius
as a man who lived in Sweden in the 1700’s - he
developed the metric measurement and therefore his name, Celsius, is used to measure temperature degrees in the metric system.
Using the map of the world, direct the students’
attention to Germany. Introduce Daniel Gabriel
Fahrenheit - a German scientist who lived in
Germany in the 1700’s. He invented the alcohol
thermometer. He also developed the Fahrenheit
scale for measuring temperatures.
degree
pounds
Locate an item that is measured in pound(s) - e.g.,
a bag of sugar, flour, etc. Use the item to introduce pound(s).
kilograms
Locate an item that is measured in kilograms
- e.g., a bag of food, butter, etc. Use the item to
introduce kilogram(s) to the students.
equivalent
measures
Place a 1 cup measuring cup on a table. Then,
have the students use a Tablespoon measuring
spoon to determine how many T are in 1 cup (17).
Introduce equivalent measures.

Measuring
Concrete Introduction of Key Vocabulary
Note: A vocabulary illustration is provided, in this Unit, for each of the key words.
yard
meter
Show the students a yard stick and a meter stick.
Have them compare and contrast the two items.
Have the students work in pairs to measure items
in the classroom, using both yards and meters.
Have the students report their findings. You may
wish to have them measure the hallway, door
frames, etc., as well.
Use the two measurements to reinforce equivalent measures.
centimeter
Show the students centimeters on a ruler. Have
each student measure an item in the classroom,
using centimeters.

Lesson Plan
Math & The Language Development Model
Review
Review the key math terms, introduced in this unit. If the vocabulary illustrations were not presented during the introduction, show them to the students at this time.
* Turn and Face , pg. 72
Basic Listening
* Flashlight Find, pg. 71
* Matching Halves, pg. 76
* Use the Mini-Illustrations activity page, from the Student Support Materials. Have the students cut out
the illustrations. Say the key words and the students show the illustrations.
Basic Speaking
* Right or Wrong, pg. 97
* Balloon Volleyball, pg. 95
Basic Reading
Introduce the math sight words to the students - match the sight words with the vocabulary illustrations. The sight words
are included in the Student Support Materials, attached to these lesson plans.
(Sight Recognition)
* Deal, pg. 163
* Provide the students with the Activity Pages, from the Student Support Materials.
(Decoding/Encoding)
* Provide the students with cut out alphabet letters. Show a vocabulary illustration; the students must use
the cut out letters to create the word for the illustration. Repeat, until all of the words have been spelled by
the students. You may have the sight words on display as guides.
* Provide the students with the Activity Pages, from the Student Support Materials.
* Watch Your Half, pg. 223
Basic Writing
