Byki drop to 3rd after shock defeat
The Byki saw their unbeaten run of eight matches to start
the indoor season disappear last Friday when they incredibly
lost 3:2 to unfancied AAC Winged Bull C. The Byki started
off sluggishly for the second straight week, but were unable
to right the ship against a young, aggressive WInged Bull
side. The Byki now sit level on points with Urahan FC, and
both teams trail Bosnia-Hercegovina B by five points in the
Red Section table.
“This was a really disappointing result,” lamented coach
George Gorecki. “We had played such smart soccer over
these first eight weeks, I thought that we had created winning
habits that would be tough to derail.”
Were the Byki peeking at the standings prematurely and
saw that 17 points separated them from Winged Bull? Seeing
that the teenagers broke into the lead after just 2:02 had
elapsed, the Byki very well might have underestimated their
opponents. A Winged Bull counterattack took the ball into
the left corner, and then a centering pass and deflected shot
was all that was needed to put Winged Bull in front.
The Byki, however, needed only 2:19 to respond. It was
simple soccer at its best. Ben Rodriguez initiated the play
with a restart at the Winged Bull defensive line. He slipped
the ball to Kuba Banbor, who neatly one-timed it to Marek
Ciszewski in the penalty area. Ciszewski turned quickly and
fired past the goalkeeper to level things at 1:1.
But the turnabout that the Byki were expecting never
came. The plucky Winged Bull team continued to press the
issue and they created the better chances in the first half.
Goalie Pete Chronowski was busy, blocking a booming shot
from the right wing, and then snuffing out a 3 v 1 play by
coming forcefully off his line five minutes later.
Winged Bull retook the lead 3:54 into the second half.
The Byki were shockingly lax following a turnover and
Winged Bull took full advantage by converting a 3 v 1
counterattack to go 2:1 up.
The Byki replied moments later and the goal came from
simple soccer once again. Ben Rodriguez dribbled along the

left side and played a square pass at midfield to Bryan de
Rama on the right wing. De Rama sized up his opportunity
quickly and unleashed a rocket shot from long range that
screamed into the upper corner to make it 2:2. The midfielder
is enjoying his best season with the Byki by far. Of his 10
career goals in all competitions, six have come this season,
Gorecki was upset with his team and their first-half
performance, accusing the players of taking “dribbling pills.”
Playing quick and simple passes has led the Byki to their
best performances, and both goals came about from playing
simply.
An excellent sequence between Adrian Borta and de Rama
set up Ciszewski for a shot from the right corner. His attempt
skimmed along the crossbar.
With 4:36 left, the Byki were inches away from the lead,
Juan Rodriguez slid a free kick from the top of the arc of the
Winged Bull penalty area to an unmarked Alen Mehagic. He
fired through a crowd and the ball dinked off of the goalpost.
Winged Bull then turned the tables on the Byki 1:10 later.
They concluded a short spell of sustained pressure by bagging
the go-ahead goal with a shot from close range, Chronowski
was called upon twice to save the day to block open shots,
but the third time was the charm for the teenagers.
The Byki now desperately ramped up the pressure to forge
a third equalizer. Their best chance came with 0:58 to go and
all six players pushed into attack. Juan Rodriguez drilled a
shot from distance that the keeper stabbed away with a foot
save.
The takeaway message for the Byki is that nothing can
be taken for granted on the soccer field. WInged Bull’s players
undoubtedly saw the difference in the point totals between
the two teams. Yet, they were undeterred in their quest to
battle for the three points.

Los Chasquis wear out the Byki
The defensive woes for the Byki became evident with
11:28 left in the contest. Los Chasquis executed a 3 v 1
counter to perfection. They moved the ball quickly to take
full advantage of Byki players out of position.
The hustling Maciek Kekus nearly provided a shock to a
wandering Chasquis goalie with 9:16 to pgo. He put pressure
on the netminder as he tried to dribble out of trouble. Kekus
won the ball and had an empty net staring at him, but he
could not find the angle to get off a clean shot.
The score went to 4:0 with 7:17 to go. The Byki failed
fundamentally when a Chasquis player was left open in the
box to tap home a shot that ricocheted off of the back boards.
And then another mental mistake was costly, when the Byki
made an ill-advised line change as Los Chasquis charged
forward on the counterattack.
Despite being down by five, the Byki kept up their work
rate. With 1:39 left, Torres knocked home a consolation goal.
He led a 2 v 1 situation, dribbling up the middle of the field.
As the keeper came out to challenge, the midfielder toe-poked
the ball into the back of the net.
It took a while for Blue Section leaders Los Chasquis to
solve the Byki defense, but they broke open a 2:0 game with
three goals in the span of six minutes in the second half to
run away with a 6:1 victory. The Byki B Team remain
pointless after nine matches.
