Show All Work for Partial Credit
Problem 1 (20 points): A piece of electronic equipment that is surrounded by packing material is dropped so
that it hits the ground with a speed of 4 m/s. After contact the equipment experiences an acceleration of
a = − kx, where k is a constant and x is the compression of the packing material. If the packing material
experiences a maximum compression of 20 mm, determine the maximum acceleration of the equipment.
(Answer: a = − 800 m/s2)
Problem 2 (45 points): The two blocks shown are originally at rest. Neglecting the masses of the pulleys and
the effect of friction in the pulleys and the friction between block A and the incline, determine the acceleration
of block B. (Answer: aB = 4.20 ft/s2)
Problem 3 (35 points): The orbit of the planet Venus is nearly circular with an orbital velocity of 126.5 × 103
km/h. Knowing that the mean distance from the center of the sun to the center of Venus is 108 × 106 km and
that the radius of the sun is 695 × 103 km, determine the mass of the sun and the acceleration of gravity at the
surface of the sun. (Answers: ms = 1.998 × 1030 kg, g = 276.1 m/s2)
