Monday:
Introduction to descriptive writing via ppt. Engage in Oreo descriptive writing
activity. Students will be given an Oreo cookie. Each student will write how it
looks, smells, sounds, feels, and then finally tastes. They will not be allowed to
use the words hard, soft, black, white, brown, chocolate, sweet or vanilla in their
descriptions. Once they have completed this activity, we will talk about how they
will be writing their own origin myth, and that the focus will be descriptive
writing. The students will have to address at least 3 of the five senses in their
story. Students will then be given a selection of origin myths to read, and will be
given time to brainstorm and complete a graphic organizer in class (Time
permitting).
Tuesday:
Students will write the rough and final draft of their origin myth in class. If it is not
completed in class, it will be assigned as homework, and will be due Wednesday
morning before the first period bell rings.
READING LOGS ARE DUE TODAY.
Wednesday:
Students will be given examples of five paragraphs of narrative writing and will be
asked to draw an image of what they are describing. Students will then be told to
find THREE images of their own using the netbooks or through illustrating, and
then writing a descriptive paragraph for each one, using all at least three of the
five senses. This will probably take two days.
Thursday:
Complete image paragraphs. Begin essay assignment. Students will write a descriptive essay
on the following topic:
Topic: Think of a memorable family gathering – a birthday party, a Thanksgiving meal,
Christmas time opening presents, a family reunion or vacation, a funeral, or other time – and
describe that event.
Graphic organizer due at the end of the block. IF ROUGH DRAFT IS BEGUN, it will also stay in
the classroom.
Guidelines: You must have
 3 to 5 paragraphs
 An introduction, middle, and conclusion
 Sensory details and imagery that appeals to at least 3 of the 5 senses
