Timeline 5, globe, a political map of Europe showing the location of
Greenland, interesting pictures of Greenland , chalk and board
Use the Let’s begin… as a warm up to introduce the lesson. Ask the students
to observe the pictures given on page 35 and discuss the points that follow.
Teaching the lesson
• On the political map show the capital of Greenland and how close it is to
Denmark.
• Explain the term iceberg. Tell the students how this poses problems to
ships.
• Discuss in class the impact of melting of ice in Greenland due to Global
warming in the Let’s talk… section.
• Describe the climate of Greenland with reference to its location. Point out
to them that with increase in distance from the Equator the climate changes.
• Explain how the climate influences vegetation and the different kinds of
vegetation found in Greenland. Explain terms like tundra region. Bring
pictures of the tundra region to show that nothing grows there.
• While teaching about the vegetation and wildlife of Greenland, ask the
students to look at the pictures of wildlife on page 40. You can also bring
more pictures of Greenland’s wildlife to show the kind of animals living here.
• Explain that the people of Greenland are called Inuit. Bring pictures of the
Inuit to show to the class. Explain the nomadic life of the Inuit. You can show
pictures of dog sledges and kayaks. Ask the students what kind of clothes the
Inuit would wear considering the climate of Greenland.
• Discuss that the houses made of ice blocks in Greenland are called igloos.
• Elaborate the housing of the people in summers and winters.
• Explain how the life of people of Greenland is changing with time.
• Ask the students why they feel Greenland is thinly populated. Sum up their
responses.
• Discuss the story of Ulva in class.

Students can complete Exercises A, B, C and D on pages 40-41 orally. They
can write the answers in their notebooks, at home. Ask the students to finish
the multiple choice Questions and call out the answers in class.

Ask the students to compare their life in India with that of Greenland where
they do not know whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner time because of the
midnight sun.
