The Kingdom of God - United and Divided

Open with Prayer – (5 min)
Use the prayer from page 20 from the Leader’s Guide.
Read the Sunday Gospel and talk about it or do a spontaneous prayer.
Take some time to connect with the students – (5 mins)
Share a God moment that you had this past week or have them share a God moment of their own.

below some of the points to focus on from the video.
† Have them take out their charts so they can follow along with the Divided Kingdom.
Notes from video: (20 min)
Take out the chart and look over the United and Divided kingdoms briefly.
The three kings of the United Kingdom:
Saul – Unites the kingdom
David – expands the kingdom
Solomon – builds the kingdom
- he taxes them, enslaves them and takes their land
The people are angry, the kingdom divides.
10 tribes to the north – Israel
2 tribes to the south – Judah
-look on page 56 in student books (page 101 & 102 in Leader’s guide)
this shows the kings of the north and the kings of the south.
Things to point out:
~the kings of the north were all bad, some kings killed their
predecessor to acquire the throne, there were nine different
dynasties (or families) that reigned.
~ some of the kings of the south were good, no king killed to
acquire the throne, they all came from the same family.
Sin =
Cycle of sin
Sin (we sin) > Servitude (we are enslaved) > Supplication (we cry out/ request) >
Salvation (God saves us/ helps us) > Silence (things are going good) > Sin (back to
sinning again)
We live in a culture that does not believe in sin. If we feel or think it’s right, then it’s OK. If it
feels good or makes us happy then it must be from God right? Wrong! Sin feels good too,
otherwise we wouldn’t be tempted.
Freedom is not doing what we want, when we want it or how we want it. That attitude makes us
a slave to our passions. If we are enslaved then we can’t say no. If we can’t say no, then we are
not free! This is where confession is so powerful; the sacrament can help break the pattern of sin.
 We have confused freedom with truth and God’s mercy with weakness.
We don’t have the right to decide what is right or wrong. We have the choice to pick from doing
right or wrong because God gave us free will.

Discussion or journal questions: - Questions brought up in video that you can discuss or have them journal.
Do you rely more on your own talent than on the grace of God to get you through the day?
Do you use your talents for the greater glory of God?
What is the Goliath in your life? What obstacle are you not willing to give up? Name it.
Pick 5 stones, things to help you to get rid of your Goliath.
When do you choose your will over God’s will?
Are you willing to speak up and say this is wrong?
