Yet another term draws to a close and it seems incredible that we are two-thirds of the way through the school year. Easter is upon us and with it a chance to be with friends and family whilst recharging the educational batteries for the summer term. Music at Warwick Bridge Carlisle Music Festival – A huge well done to the music ensemble who took first place in their category at the Carlisle and District Music and Drama festival. The five musicians were – Abbie McPherson, (flute), Sam Roberts, (saxophone), Olivia McPherson, (saxophone), Leon Hodge, (clarinet) and Luke Mann, (clarinet). They took home the trophy that that been first awarded in 1911 so there is a lot of history attached to it. Special thanks go to Mrs Trenell who accompanied on piano and to Mr Hemingway who arranged and conducted the music. Mr Hemingway’s Lessons – With a view to replacing many of our ensemble players who are leaving for high school in July, twenty-nine pupils expressed an interest in playing a woodwind or brass instrument. Please ensure that any slips are brought back in to school upon our return from the Easter break so we can make arrangements for summer and the 2016-17 academic year. Sport at Warwick Bridge Cross Country – The annual Lanercost Cross Country races took place on Saturday 19th March. It was great to see the number of Warwick Bridge School pupils taking part. The weather was perfect and a great time was had by all. A special mention must go to William Rafferty and Isabelle Milligan who came second in the boys’ and girls’ races respectively. They helped our Nursery, Reception and Key Stage 1 team achieve second place overall – a fantastic result. This is Warwick Bridge’s best result at these races. Have a look at the photos on the school website. Sport Relief 2016 Thank you to all parents and carers who supported our ‘Fifteen Minute Frenzy’ on Sport Relief Day. The pupils enjoyed running around the course set up by Miss Day and the Year 4 pupils. During build up to Sport Relief our Year 6 pupils sold official Sport Relief stress balls and wrist bands in school. Combined with the money raised by pupil contributions Warwick Bridge raised well over £100 for good causes. UDance Festival A huge well done to all our dancers in Year 1 who lit up the stage at the Carlisle Schools’ UDance Festival on the 17th March. The pupils performed an imaginative piece based on the Great Fire of London 1666. Their costumes made the audience think of flames racing around the capital city as the emergency services battled to put it out. Many thanks to Judith for all her hard work choreographing the piece. And huge thanks to all the staff who put in such a great effort to produce a stunning outcome. Attendance Matters Well done Windermere class – our young pupils have done very well again. And they also are the top class for the Autumn term – a fantastic achievement. Our pupils in years 2, 3, 4 and 5 are also doing very well for the whole year with totals over 96%, still 1% behind our Nursery /Reception pupils. The Consultation Evenings were a great success with the RotaKids arranging refreshments – donations for the drinks and biscuits raised over £30 for the RotaKids’ chosen charity, the RSPCA. Year 5 at William Howard School On Friday 18th March all our Year 5 pupils went to visit William Howard School for their Taster Day. Everyone had a great time and they took part in a number of lessons. They produced some fantastic art work inspired by the fish paintings of J. Vincent Scarpace. The finished articles will form the basis of a display in the Ennerdale classroom. Pupils were then taken to a very interesting maths lesson based around creating pentominoes - shapes created by using five cubes. At lunchtime we visited the canteen and every pupil had a free lunch before returning to the Year 7 Common Room. The pupils finished the day with an RE and Philosophy lesson which made them think about many challenging questions. Warwick Bridge School Kitchens We are very pleased to report that the school kitchens have been awarded five stars from the latest inspection. This is the highest award that can be bestowed and ranks the kitchens in terms of hygiene and cleanliness. Many congratulations to all the staff concerned and it is just reward for all the hard work and fantastic food preparation that goes on in school. School Resources Parents and carers will be interested to know that the new Adventure Trail is nearing completion. The old trail has been removed leaving a climbing wall and hanging bars. New additions will be fully operational after the Easter holiday. Our playground will undergo a revamp as well with the addition of brand new thermoplastic markings that will adorn the ground. We are also looking forward to using new climbing grips on the wall. Finally, each classroom is now equipped with a state-of-the-art interactive panel TV. These should really bring learning alive for our pupils. Theatre Group visit The school was very pleased to welcome the Image Theatre Group who performed the Arthurian tale ‘The Sword in the Stone’. Many pupils took part as actors having lines to learn. All the pupils joined in the songs and a great time was had by all at this end of term treat. Easter Celebrations We ended the spring term with a number of fun activities held in school. The RotaKids organised an egg hunt in the school grounds and every participant got a sweet treat. There was also and egg-rolling competition with winners from each class taking home a mini chocolate egg. On Wednesday all the pupils got very arty and decorated a hard-boiled egg in the form of an animal. Picking winners from each year group was very difficult because the quality was so high. And our Easter celebrations were completed when Reverend Andrew Longshaw came to lead our end of term assembly. I am sure you will join with me in wishing Andrew all the very best as he is moving on to Yorkshire in the near future. We say thank you for all he has done for the school and hope all goes well in his new challenge. It only remains to say have a wonderful and restful Easter holiday in the company of friends and family. We look forward to seeing all the pupils back at school on Monday 11th April fully refreshed for the new summer term. With best wishes Mr M Ashton
