Unit 2: Physical Properties of Matter
Lesson 1: Changes in Properties
Time Frame: 10 days
Objectives
Skills: The student will be able to…
• Know that matter has measurable physical properties and those properties determine
how matter is classified, changed, and used. Classify matter based on physical
properties, including mass, magnetism, physical state, relative density, solubility in
water, and the ability to conduct or insulate thermal energy or electrical energy.
• Identify the boiling and freezing/melting points of water on the Celsius scale.
Readiness:
5.5A
TEKS
Supporting:
5.5B
Scientific Process Skills:
5.1A, 5.1B, 5.2C, 5.2D,
5.2F, 5.4A, 5.4B
Scientific Process TEKS must be incorporated into
instruction as appropriate throughout the school year.
ELPS:
6A, 6C, 9A
Performance Indicators:
By the end of the unit the student will be able to…
• classify matter based on physical properties.
• determine how matter is changed.
• determine how matter is used.
• know what causes changes when heating and cooling cause changes in water.
•
Student will be able to answer these key questions at the end of the unit:
o What is matter?
o What are some physical properties of matter we can observe?
o How does matter react to a magnet?
o How is matter classified?
o What tools can you use to measure or observe matter?

Misconceptions/Underdeveloped Concepts
•
•
•
•
Students may think that gases are not matter because most are invisible.
Students may think that mass and weight are the same.
Students may think that melting changes the composition of matter.
Students may think that freezing point and melting point of matter are different temperatures.
