Anti-social behaviour who to contact?
Library engagers – Community Engagement Assistant Kay Wood, (front row second left), and
Community Engagement Librarian Team Leader Margaret Simpson, (front row third from left), with St
Anthony’s pupils and librarians Marguerite Jackson (back row far left) and Ann Purdy (back row third left).
Sunderland City Council is committed to
tackling anti-social behaviour and
provides support and assistance to
residents in the private housing sector.
You can help solve problems in your
area by reporting anti-social behaviour.
This can include:
• Nuisance families
• Youth disorder
• Verbal abuse
• Harassment and intimidation
• Noise nuisance
• Neighbour disputes
You can report any of these issues by
calling 0191 520 5550. If you are
experiencing anti-social behaviour
caused by a private tenant or an owner
occupier, the City Council can help. If the
behaviour is very serious and there is a
risk to your safety, you should always
contact the police.
Bringing the library to the community
East area’s updated library service has a
new engagement team – Margaret
Simpson and Kay Wood.
Margaret, who manages the outreach
team, is helping take the service into the
community and has worked in city libraries
for more than 20 years.
She said: “The new service is all about
taking what we have to offer to people
instead of just keeping it in library buildings
and having people come to us.
“We have Community Book Collection
points where people can drop in, borrow a
book as they would from a traditional
library and return it to any of the points in
the area, no ticket is needed .”
The East team is based at the City
Library in Fawcett Street which is currently
closed for a major refurbishment and due
to open again at the end of March.
Both Margaret and Kay are keen to
engage with members of the community,
groups and organisations and become the
face of libraries in the East area. There has
been a good start with Community Book
Collections at:
• Bangladeshi Community Centre
• Carisbrooke Court
• Lumley Tower
• Hudson Road Primary School
• Age UK
• Arts Studio

Love where you live
Pupils at Hendon's Hudson Road Primary
have been presented with special ‘Love
Where You Live’ certificates after they ran a
schools project promoting a ‘safety play’
message.
The project was overseen by Hendon
councillor Michael Mordey and he
presented achievement certificates to eight
pupils plus a £200 voucher towards new
library books.
Councillor Mordey said: “The pupils
wanted to encourage their friends and
other young people in their neighbourhood
to play safely. By researching the city
centre, East and Hendon areas our group
came up with hot and grot messages. Hot
Spots were safe and friendly, but Grot Spots
were dangerous and unfriendly. The pupils
then designed their own booklet which is
being circulated to every child in Hendon
via the local primary schools.
“We’ve all agreed that gardens are fine,
parks or homes and proper play areas are
fine too and they were all Hot Spots. But
many public spaces such as near roads are
not a good idea and these are Grot Spots."
The school's headteacher Cathy
Westgate said all the pupils had enjoyed the
project and it helped introduce and remind
everyone in the school about good and bad
places for play.
She said: "It's been a very interesting
project for all the pupils. They've all got
involved and really thought about their
neighbourhood and environment. They can
all be very proud of what they have
achieved and we're all very proud of them."
Getting more people active
The number of people in Sunderland taking part in regular physical activity and sport is
on the rise and the city has just been awarded £200,000 to get more people active.
The money has come through Sport England’s Community Sport Activation Fund
and will be put towards a number of ‘Active Sunderland’ neighbourhood festivals. At the
festivals people will have the chance to meet local sports clubs, have a go at new sports
and sign up to eight week beginner courses. For more details keep checking

Coastal path
Ryhope Councillor Alan Emerson with
Roxanne Walker from the England Coast
Path Delivery Team.
Steps to complete the city’s stretch of
England’s Coastal Path are nearing
completion.
In the East area, the path runs from
Wearmouth Bridge to Ryhope Dene. It
includes Panns Bank, to Boars Head
View, past the Port of Sunderland and to
the Town Moor, Ocean Road, and
Hendon Beach.
Ryhope Councillor Alan Emerson,
alternate vice-chair of the East Area
Committee, has taken a close interest in
the project.
He said: “Much of the land here is
already public or council land so we’ve
taken a close look at how we can help
walkers on the path with extra signs and
information points.”
There are 14 interpretation points
planned and these would include city
information and how far to other points
and attractions, such as Mowbray Park or
Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens.
Councillor Emerson added: “There’s
been a lot of interest in the tourism and
leisure sector about the path being
completed. I think we can expect to see
many people taking up the opportunity
to walk the path locally, nationally and
internationally. Sunderland is already an
attraction for many people with the C2C
cycle route so here’s another longdistance path.”
After Hendon Beach, the path passes
the Grange before then going to Tollbar,
Ryhope, then through the village, onto
Ryhope Dene Bank Top and then into
the Dene. On the north side of the river,
the path follows the C2C cycle route and
then through Roker and onto South
Bents.
Andrew Best is the Senior Adviser England Coast Path (north east) – for
Natural England and said the new path
would help increase the number of
visitors.
He said: “The path is going to
encourage more locals to visit the coast
and visitors from further afield. They will
all find an attractive and fascinating area
away from the usual tourist hotspots.
“Studies from other parts of the UK
suggest that there will be a significant
boost to the local economy and by
encouraging walkers onto this high
quality trail we hope that there will also
be health and exercise benefits.”
The path in Sunderland runs for 11km
(7 miles) with 6.5 km [4 miles] south of
the Wearmouth Bridge and 4.5 km [3
miles] north of the river as far as South
Bents.
See www.naturalengland.org.uk for
more information.

Dog
control
orders
Dog control areas are being prepared for
parks, playing fields and open spaces.
Councillors say dog fouling and
irresponsible owners continue to be one of
the biggest issues raised by residents.
Ryhope Councillor Alan Emerson is
Deputy Chair of the City Council’s East Area
Committee that covers the Doxford,
Hendon, Millfield, St Michael’s and Ryhope
wards.
He said: “Whether it’s when I hold my
surgeries, see people out and about or at
meetings, one of the recurring themes is
dog fouling and the distress it causes to so
many people.
“The council has looked again at the
powers that are available to it and is now
preparing to introduce Dog Control Orders.”
The by-laws on controlling dogs are
made under the Clean Neighbourhoods and
Environment Act and include five offences:
• Failing to remove dog faeces
• Not keeping a dog on a lead
• Not putting, and keeping, a dog on a
lead when directed to do so by an
authorised officer
• Permitting a dog to enter land
from which dogs are excluded
• Taking more than the specified
number of dogs onto land.
A fine, also known as a Fixed Penalty Notice,
of £80 can be offered as an alternative to
court action.
More than 20 places in the East area
have been identified for the dog control
orders. They include: Mowbray Park,
Backhouse Park, Sunniside Gardens, Galleys
Gill, Hendon’s Hudson Road, Millfield’s
Diamond Hall Park and Ryhope Park.
Hendon ward Councillor Michael Mordey
is Policy Member for City Services and has
worked with council officers on drawing up
the orders for East and the city's four other
areas - Coalfield, North, Washington and
West.
He said: “If people own a dog then they
are responsible for it and they need to clean
up after it. Unfortunately too many people
do not act responsibly.
“As councillors, we reflect our
community views and the view is that dog
control orders can be a step forward to
seeing more dog owners acting
responsibly.”
The council is now consulting on the
proposals.

focuses on sensible eating habits. It
takes place at Sunderland Aquatic

Are you ready for Universal Credit?
Over the next few years Universal Credit will be introduced across the country.
Everyone of working age who receives Income based Jobseekers Allowance,
Income related Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Housing
Benefit, Working Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit will move to Universal Credit.
Universal Credit is a single monthly payment paid directly into a bank account
and must be applied for and managed online. The implementation of Universal
Credit has been delayed until at least 2015 or 2016 for new claimants and 2016
onwards for most existing claimants . While the Government is still to confirm a
lot of details, it is important that everyone who will be affected is ready.
To make sure you are ready you can;
• Get in control. Universal Credit
payments will be paid in monthly
instalments so it’s important to set up
a budget to make sure you can meet
important bills like rent and council
tax.
• The Exercise Referral programme
is for adults age over 16 who are
currently not taking part in any form of
exercise and have a condition that
their GP or healthcare professional
thinks can be improved with physical
activity. Activities include gym, cycling,
walking, dance, pilates, aqua fit and
gentle circuits. Anyone interested
should contact their GP.
• Lifestyle, Activity and Food is a
weight management programme for
children aged 5-15 years and their
families. Activities include cooking,
food tasting, fun games and fitness
activities. More information is available
from GPs or on 0191 561 4691 /

programme includes Aquanatal,
Mums on the Move and Mums in the
Pool. Classes take place across the city
and information is available from

programme is for people who are

account. If you don’t have one
already you need to sign up to receive
electronic payments with a bank,
building society or credit union.
• Get online. Universal Credit must be
applied for and managed online. A
range of organisations can help with
internet access and improving your
computer skills including Sunderland
College, the National Careers Service,

conversation about what many originally
saw as a difficult area for discussion by
providing free online and downloadable
guidance.
