As we ask for God’s care and guidance for our Athle cs Carnival let us remember that the real value is in par cipa on and doing our best to achieve. The words of Michael Jordan, perhaps the greatest basketball player in history, help to put this into perspec ve for us. I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 mes, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. Michael Jordan

Dear Parents The march of the “reading feet” is relentless and I have resigned myself to the fact that the children Saturday Evening may make it all the way to my office. So I have sourced some Eagles and Dockers gear and am preparing 6:00pm myself for the ignominy of wearing the enemy’s colours tomorrow….but only if the last few classes Sunday make it to my office in me! I’ll check progress in the morning and may need to break out the face 8:00am, 10:00am paints a er our Merit Assembly. As of this a ernoon 2714 books have been read…. What a fantas c effort. For 3000 I may even barrack for the West Aussie teams! U

ONE‐TO‐ONE iPADS
Technology con nues to change at an incredibly rapid rate and we are constantly looking for ways to 
enhance the children’s educa onal opportuni es. For some me now we have been exploring our 
Merit Assembly Informa on Technology op ons for the future and believe that it is me to consider the introduc on of Friday 14 September a one‐to‐one programme across some of the classes, specifically Years 3, 4 and 5 from 2013. A mee ng to discuss the implica ons of this programme will be held on Wednesday 26 September at 7.00pm. I 
invite all parents to this mee ng especially those who will have children in Years 3, 4 and 5 in 2013. First Eucharist FACTION ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Student Retreat Day Monday 17 September Mr Flexman has been working hard preparing for the Carnival next Wednesday. This year there are a couple of changes that we hope will make the Carnival more exci ng for the children and the parents. 
The Fac
on bays will be inside the running track so that the children are be er able to see each of the Board Mee ng events and we hope, me permi ng, to hold each event separately rather than a couple of events Monday 17 September 7.30pm running concurrently so that the focus is in one area at a me. Parents are invited to bring their picnic rugs and set up on the embankment on the western side of the oval. Throughout the day children are 
not to go to their parents as this may cause problems with them being available for events. Also, as we First Eucharist Parent/Student Workshop will all be able to see each event, parents are asked not to come near or onto the track, par cularly near the finish line, as this is a distrac on for the children during events. Please see the form later in Tuesday 18 September 4G at 5.00pm
the newsle er if you are able to assist on the day. 4L at 7.00pm
Now we just need to pray for the great weather to con nue. N.B. If anyone has contact details for a coffee van please let Libby Dimmer know so that we can arrange 
for them to be at the Carnival. Athle cs Carnival Wednesday 19 September PPS
As parents would be aware, Emma Swemmer will be leaving us during Term 4 for the birth of her baby. 
Miss Summer Alexander has been appointed to replace Emma from this me. Summer is an excellent teacher who has recently worked in Year 2 with Ms Rudyard and we look forward to welcoming her to Holy Rosary. Emma will meet with Summer before she departs to ensure con nuity of the class programmes. AUSTRALIAN PRIMARY PRINCIPALS’ CONFERENCE
Next week (Tuesday – Friday) I will be a ending this conference in Melbourne. During my absence Libby Dimmer will be in charge. U

SIENA Friends of Au sm are holding the OCTOBER SCHOOL HOLIDAYS programme for children aged 3.5 to 6 years and 7 to 18 years. Please contact them on 94406800 or email [email protected] to register your interest. This week has been very busy with many of the field events being conducted on the oval. The children did very well and gave it their best effort to score points for their fac on as well their own self confidence! Have a great weekend everyone and let’s hope our teams from the west keep us on the road to the MCG! THREE YEAR OLD KINDY
We have had a very busy week in 3 year old kindy. On Tuesday the last of the photographs were taken. In the a ernoon we went for a walk around the school looking for different shapes in the outdoors. The children really enjoyed the fresh air and loved it when we took them to the green grassy slope at the big oval where they ran and tumbled up and down. The Scitech incursion was on Wednesday and Thursday. It was fantas c. The children used their senses to play and experiment with all the wonderful toys and equipment that were on offer. We have started learning about outer space this week. We are transforming the stage into a moon scene and were wondering whether anyone has an old helmet or small gum boots that we could have to spray paint silver and turn into space helmets and boots for dress ups. If so bring them to Mrs Peel or Mrs Lynch any me on Tuesday to Thursday. Many thanks. The Three Year Old Kindy Crew XOXO FANTASTIC KINDY,
What an awesome week in Kindy! We have learnt all about opposites, the le er m and the le er n. We have had a brilliant me with our gorgeous parents rolling golf balls over wombats to paint them and we have loved reading lots of books to make our feet go all the way to Mr Winsor's office. We loved our incursion that Mrs Lynch organised with SciTech‐it was awesome and we learnt so much. Have a fantas c weekend . X Mrs C, Mrs J, Mrs A and Mrs B KINDY FRIDAY’S AUSSIE FRIENDS
Last Friday we found Australia on a map of the world and made our own map of Australia by tracing around a template and finding pictures to glue onto our map. We discussed our flag, animals, birds and many other things that symbolise our country. We completed a book review of a short Australian picture book to refine our listening and comprehension skills. This week we will make ourselves a kangaroo hat, read a couple of famous Australian stories and we are going to do some cooking to go with one of the books. Children may like to bring in something for show and tell to add to our theme. God bless you all. Kindy Friday staff PRE PRIMARY
Pre Primary have enjoyed all the different learning ac vi es that have accompanied the Ugly Duckling and Goldilocks and The Three Bears. We surprised the children with an incursion from Josephine on Wednesday. We told them that morning that they were ge ng a surprise and brainstormed some ideas of what that might be and what emo ons we were experiencing about not knowing. A er the show the children got to share how they felt and what they liked most about Josephine’s story telling show. Please remember to read, read, read! Fill in the feet and cut them out, the children must return all their feet as soon as possible to add to the path to Mr Winsor’s office! We con nue to pray for our buddies who are preparing for their first Holy Communion. YEAR TWO
We have been learning about Poetry and how to write and sequence limericks. We have become very wi y with our one liners and rhyming. In Maths we have started learning about frac ons and how to divide shapes and objects up into halves and quarters. A very big thank you to the parents who came in on Friday to help with the Athle cs Carnival events….we couldn’t have done it without you. Reminder: Our Year Two Olympics Day is this Friday from 11:15am un l 1:05pm. The weather is looking to be beau ful so we hope you can come down to join us. Have a great weekend xx YEAR THREE
The Amazing Threes are honing their athle c skills this week in prepara on for the Athle cs Carnival next Wednesday. We have run our trials and are amazed at the talent we have in Year Three. We must remember that enjoying athle cs is more important than winning. Every child in our class is a winner. We are learning about mul plica on in maths and are looking at different ways to help us work out mul plica on problems. In English we are discovering the wonder of synonyms and antonyms as well as reading and wri ng poetry. The children have wri en some beau ful shape poems. Our reading feet are progressing steadily along the wall. The children have read lots and lots of books, which is always great to see. Keep up the good work. The iPads are con nuing to be enthusias cally used in our classes and in viewing, we’ve been looking at camera angles and how different angles can create different effects. Have a safe and happy weekend. YEAR FOUR
The Year 4s had a very busy Week 7! On Monday we had the me trials and are busy preparing for Holy Communion at the end of next week! In Mathema cs we looked at the concept of Chance and Data, looking at events that are likely, unlikely and impossible to happen. In English we star ng planning our own Greek Myth, designing a main character and se ng and in Health we con nued to look at the best way to solve conflict. Thank you to all of the parents who helped to measure our carnival events on Monday and please remember that Communion Booklets are due this Friday. Have a lovely weekend. FANTASTIC FIVES
On Tuesday the Year 5 and 6 did the Athle cs trials. We did Shot Put, 800m , 400m, Long jump, 200m sprint and Turbo Javelin. It was a lot of fun and got to miss out on lots of school work. Thankyou to all the parents who helped with the trials. We are pu ng together our por olios and we think our parents will like them a lot. Our “My Place” dioramas are of a place where we enjoy. Some students have done bedrooms, sport fields or stadiums; they are looking very interes ng and impressive. We are up to chapters 15 and 16 of ‘The Indian in the Cupboard’. When we have finished the book we get to watch the movie. By Nicholas Stone & Ben Tindall THE SMOOTH SIXES
It has been a great week in Year 6 as we begin to get used to the season of spring. In Literacy this week, we have begun looking at wri ng discussions which are very similar to exposi ons, only they present both sides of an argument. We’ve explored some great topics such as whether; a school week should be 4 days, logging old forests should be permi ed and if children should be allowed to vote. In Mathema cs, we’ve been pu ng our accoun ng and architectural skills to great use as we’ve prac sed designing floor plans and working out the cost of different floor materials. You could say that we’re ‘floored’ by our efforts. In Religion, we’ve con nued with our Eucharis c unit, looking at God’s wonderful crea on and sharing in the spectacular sights he’s provided for us. We had a superb day on Tuesday compe ng in our fac ons for different athle cs events. We’re so proud of our efforts and we would like to WONDERFUL ONES

The informa on used by a reader to construct meaning can be discussed under three major categories: meaning or seman c cues, structural or syntac c cues, and visual clues including phonological awareness. Seman c informa on is associated with meaning ‐ with the ideas presented in text, pictures and diagrams. The meaning a reader finds in a text, will always depend on what experience he brings to the text. Meaning differs according to an individual’s personal experiences. Knowing the syntax and gramma cal structure of a language enables the reader to an cipate the correct parts of speech , and the order of words in a sentence, while reading. Visual clues include graphic informa on, such as the printed le ers on the page, and the conven ons of print, such as spacing and direc on. These enable the reader to iden fy sentences, groups of words, individual le ers, or pa erns of le ers in clusters, affixes, and roots. Print conven ons include direc onal principles, the use of spaces, capital and lowercase le ers, and punctua on. Phonics is a crucial source of informa on for readers. A learner’s understanding of the sound sequences in spoken words is called phonological awareness. ***************************************************************** LIBRARY NEWS

Year 2 completed an inves ga on write‐up on their plant inves ga ons. Mrs Skinner’s garlic and carrot top are both growing well in the classroom! We also looked at animals and their babies and learned about researching using Encyclopaedia Britannica. We found out that a poult is a baby turkey and some other interes ng baby names of animals. Year 4 inves gated air resistance and completed some experiments with a scrunched up piece of paper and a flat piece of paper. We discovered that the flat piece of paper takes longer to reach the ground due to there being more air resistance ac ng on it. We also inves gated the force of magnets. We sprinkled some iron filings on a piece of paper and saw the pa ern the magne c field makes. Year 6 learned about how hurricanes and tornadoes are formed. Tornadoes touch the ground whereas hurricanes are really bad storms. In Australia we call them cyclones and a really bad cyclone went through Darwin in the 1970’s. Cyclones have an eye of the storm where everything is clear and quiet. This week we are sharing our informa on on natural disasters with the other class members.
