Introducing the I’m 100 Days Smarter! Candy Graphing Grid Activity Mats Kit On 100th Day, distribute the Activity Mats and explain to students that they are going to use the Activity Mats for some fun 100th Day graphing activities. Have students count the circles on the Activity Mats and share the number they found. Tell students that they are 100 days smarter than when they started school and that they are real “smarties.” Explain that they are going to use individual Smarties® to place in the graph on their Activity Mats. (You may want to make a transparency of the Activity Mat to use for demonstration purposes.) Distribute the Activity Mats and have your students complete one or more of the following graphing activities. students to decide on their favorite—just one. (Have them save the remaining candy pieces in the Roll for the next activity.) Write the flavors on the board, survey the class’s favorites, and tally them. Have students transfer the tallies to the graph on the Activity Mat by coloring the appropriate number of circles in each column. Ask students which flavor was liked the most and which flavor was liked the least. Expand the activity by asking more questions, such as Which flavor was liked second best? and How many students participated? Sorting and Graphing by Color Divide the remaining Rolls evenly among students. Have them label in pencil the first six columns along the x-axis with the colors of white, yellow, pink, green, purple, and orange. Tell students to open their Roll and place the candy pieces in the circles above the correct colors. Ask students whose graph shows that they have the most white candies, yellow candies, pink candies, and so on until all of the colors have been addressed. Then ask the same about whose graph has the least and the same. Expand the activity by asking more questions, like Who has more pink than green? and Who has less orange than yellow? Have the students count to see how many candies they had in all. Ask students to remove the candy from their graphs, one piece at a time, and color in the circle to represent the color of the candy. When all of the pieces are removed, allow students to eat their Smarties® or supply each student with a zippered plastic bag to take them home. Display the graphs on a bulletin board titled We’re 100 Days Smarter! Whole Class Graphing Cooperative Group Graphing Counting by Tens Each Smarties® Roll contains 10 candy pieces. Place the bowl of Rolls on a table and call students up to choose a Roll and say the numbers to count to 100 by tens. For example, the first student would choose a Roll, set it on the table and say 10. The next student would choose a Roll, set it next to the other one, and say 20, and so on until they have counted out a group of 100 candy pieces. Then the next student starts again to count out another group. Continue until all of the Rolls have been sorted into 10 groups of 100 candies each. Point to each group as you tell students that 10 groups of 10 equals 100 Rolls or 1,000 pieces of candy. Return the unopened Rolls to the bowl for additional activities. 100th Day Group Graphing Copy the 100th Day Group Graphing Reproducible. Divide students into groups and give each student an Activity Mat and each group 10 Rolls of Smarties®, a paper bag, and a copy of the reproducible. Have students write their names on the reproducible and label in pencil the first six columns with the colors white, yellow, pink, green, purple, and orange. Tell each group to open the Smarties® and dump them into the bag, resulting in 100 pieces of loose candy. Explain that the members of each group are to take turns drawing out one piece of candy from the bag and placing it in the appropriate column on their graphs. They are to keep drawing until all 100 pieces have been placed. Afterward, direct the groups to analyze their graphs and fill in the information on the reproducible. Graphing Flavors Tell students to label in pencil the x-axis on the Activity Mat with the flavors of orange cream, pineapple, cherry, strawberry, grape, and orange. Have students take out crayons to match the colors: White for orange cream, yellow for pineapple, pink for cherry, green for strawberry, purple for grape, and orange for orange. Distribute a Roll to each student and tell them that they are going to taste each color of candy and decide on their favorite flavor: Indicate that as you announce the color of a Smartie®, they are to taste it. While they are savoring the taste of each Smartie®, tell them the flavor of it. Then ask Ask students to remove the candy from their graphs, one piece at a time, and color in the circle to represent the color of the candy. Have students throw out the handled candy and supply them with an unopened Roll to eat. Allow each group to share its findings with the class and then display the graphs on a bulletin board titled Group Graphing for Colors. 100th Day Graphing Certificate Copy the 100th Day Graphing Certificate Reproducible, fill in students’ names, and award them for a job well done!
