Part 1 Usage
A) Past perfect tense
When we talk about two past actions, we often use the past perfect tense to talk about the
action that happened first, and the simple past tense to talk about the second action.

When we ask questions, we put had before the subject and the past participle after it. We give
short answers with Yes, … had. or No, … had not (hadn’t).
Example
A: Had you planned to become a teacher before you graduated from university?
B: Yes, I had. / No, I hadn’t.

B) Past perfect tense with before and after
To emphasize the sequence of the two actions, we can use the conjunctions of time before and
after with the past perfect tense.
We usually put the simple past tense after the conjunction before and put the past perfect tense
after the conjunction after.
Examples
1) Before we finished primary school, my mother had been too busy to find time for herself.
2) After my brother and I had entered secondary school, my mother had some free time for her
interests.

A MURDER IN LAM TSUEN
 Chapter One 
“A man killed himself! Help!” Yvonne shouted. She discovered a dead body near the Lam Tsuen
Wishing Tree. She dialed 999 to call the police. Then the police and the ambulance arrived very
quickly.
The police looked into the case. Although there was not any suspicious point, the police thought
that it might be a murder case. They asked Yvonne to give testimony.
What Yvonne saw was only a corpse. There was not much she could tell the police. However,
residents started talking about the case.
People who live in Lam Tsuen have been gossiping about a haunted house in Lam Tsuen. It was
related to Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree. It was a shock to the residents when the police found out
who the victim was.
