Children living on the street and in slums face multiple challenges attending school. Calcutta is one of the four biggest metropolitan cities in India with a population of 15.2 million people. It is estimated that there are at least 100,000 children on the streets of Calcutta. The average age of children on the street is 7. Children living on the streets are highly vulnerable to traffickers who trap the children into begging rings, criminal activities and even prostitution. Children living on the street and in slums face multiple challenges attending school. They often have to work to survive which carries many dangers as well as removing all chance of a hopeful future. They often face discrimination in the classroom because of their home situation and lack of hygiene. These children often lack any confidence or belief that they have the ability to succeed because of the environment in which they are growing up. ThePROJECT. Vision Rescue has been working with street children in India since 2004. Vision Rescue has been working with street children in India since 2004. They started working with 6 children and this has expanded to providing non-formal education and food to thousands of children each week. This program has great success in transitioning children, from the non-formal education on buses, into formal education at schools where they can have a chance for a better life. Around 200 hundred children graduate into formal education or vocational training each year. The program teaches the basics of literacy and numeracy in both Hindi and English as well as confidence building activities all designed in a fun and engaging way that encourages children to learn and want to continue with their education. They also are fed a nutritious meal before they attend the class each day. The teachers also work with the families to enrol the children back into school and design assistance around the family’s needs to ensure that the children can stay in school and gain an education. This holistic approach allows Vision Rescue not only to get children back into school but ensure that they don’t drop out again. ··························· $500 will sponsor 2 children $ £ € R onto the “SISTERHOOD” bus in Calcutta for a year with non-formal education and a hot meal 5 days a week. £500 will sponsor 4 children onto the “SISTERHOOD” bus in Calcutta for a year with non-formal education and a hot meal 5 days a week. €500 will sponsor 3 children onto the “SISTERHOOD” bus in Calcutta for a year with non-formal education and a hot meal 5 days a week. PRAY BRISTISSTORY. Bristi is from a very poor family. Her mother works as a maid and is the sole breadwinner as Bristi’s father is sick and cannot work. She has 4 sisters and because of lack of finance, her parents were not sending all the children to school. The children who were enrolled in school were not actually attending on a regular basis as they were expected to do the household chores. Vision Rescue spoke to her parents to encourage them to send their children to school and helped her parents see the value in an education for their girls. Now Bristi and all her elder sisters are going to school regularly! For the children to attend the buses regularly and transition well into school. Pray for the families that they would be strong and healthy and provide safe environments for the children to grow up in. Pray for the teachers and workers who are so committed to seeing these children succeed. FUNDRAISE ‘500 for $500’ gives you 500 ways to raise $500. There is an idea that will work for everyone.
