Week 2 - Floating Grapes







3 drinking glasses
Masking tape
Marker
1 larger glass or measuring cup
Water and sugar
Grapes
A spoon
Week 5 - Potential and Kinetic Energy


Any two of the following balls: tennis, golf, ping pong, baseball, soccer, basketball, etc.
Meter stick
Week 7 - Heat Transfer by Conduction









3 toothpicks
Butter, margarine, or shortening
Metal jar lid
Plastic margarine or yogurt lid
Small piece of wood (flat and able to float - may substitute Styrofoam)
Large bowl or bucket
Hot water
Tape
Watch/clock with second hand or stopwatch
Week 11 - Making and Using an Electroscope






A clear glass or jar
A piece of cardboard, heavy paper, or a plastic lid that can be fastened over the glass with tape.
Tape
A large paper clip (may use copper wire as shown below)
Two small pieces of aluminum foil
A large plastic bottle, a balloon, or a large plastic comb
Week 13 - Growing Crystals





Alum, table salt, Epsom salt
Glass jars and bowls
Measuring cups and spoons
Distilled water
Stirring spoon

Magnifying glass
Nylon thread (fishing line or thread can be substituted)
Lead weight and pencil (small, heavy, waterproof object can be substituted for lead weight)
Week 17 - Cartesian Diver





1 clear empty two liter soda bottle or water bottle with cap (any size will do - as long as it is plastic)
Glass of water or other container to test out the initial buoyancy of diver
Drinking straw
Scissors
Modeling clay (any kind of flexible, non-soluble material will work; blu tack, silly putty, adhesive
putty, etc. even chewing gum will work)
Week 19 - Balloon Rocket Blasters





Balloon (long ones work best, but a round one will do too)
Piece of string at least 10 feet long
Plastic straw
Tape
Two chairs or sturdy door handles about 10 feet apart with clear space in between (tying one end
of the string to something high in the air and holding on to the other end will work as well - tree
branch, top of the stair banister, high shelf, etc.)
Week 23 - Red Cabbage Indicator










Safety goggles or glasses
Red cabbage (must be red/purple)
Water
Blender
Fine strainer or coffee filter
Clear glasses or jars - minimum of 4 (baby food jars work well)
Graduated cylinder
White paper
Apron or lab coat (avoid nasty stains!)
Test chemicals: Choose at least 2 from each column
White Vinegar

Hand sanitizer
Baking soda
Laundry detergent

Week 27 - Refraction or Laser Jell-O
Supplies from Experimental Investigation 10 in Text or the following:

1 Box red Jell-O or any similar brand (can substitute another color but Jell-O and laser color must
be the same)
 Red laser pointer (laser must be the same color as Jell-O)
 Mixing bowl
 Hot and cold water
 Measuring cups
 13 x 9 pan
 Pizza cutter and/or knife
 Graph paper
Week 29 - Penny Battery
Penny only version:









6 Pennies (year 1982 or later)
100 grit or so sandpaper
Card stock, mat board, or non-corrugated
cardboard
Scissors
1/2 Cup Vinegar
1 TBSP Salt
Voltmeter/Multimeter (optional)
LED (basic through hole RED LED is best)
Electrical tape (optional)

6 Nickels (can substitute zinc washers)

Week 31 - Electromagnetism
Choose one of the following:
1) Build an electromagnet




5 meters of magnet wire (24 to 30 gauge, Radio Shack #278-1345)
4" common nail (Canadian Tire # 61-5311-4)
AA battery
Small piece of medium sandpaper
2) Simple Speaker




3 meters of magnet wire (24 to 30 gauge, Radio Shack #278-1345)
an empty film canister
one ring magnet (Radio Shack #64-1885)
masking tape and small piece of sandpaper
