What is an explorer?
Hernando de Soto
The Native Americans were
living on the land in South
Carolina when the explorers
arrived. An explorer is a
person who travels to discover
something new. These
explorers came from many
different countries in Europe.
Europe is the continent on the
other side of the Atlantic
Ocean. These explorers came
because their king told them
to. People wanted to show that
they were loyal to their
country, so they did what the
king asked. When the king
asked you to do something, it
was called “for king and
country.” Let’s learn about
these explorers!
Hernando de Soto came from
Spain. He was looking for gold
and slaves. He and his men first
landed in Florida and then
traveled through South
Carolina. Since they were
looking for gold, they did not
stay and settle the land.

Jean Ribault
Jean Ribault was from France.
He landed on Parris Island with
a small crew of men. They did
not want Spain to claim all of
the land in the New World.
They built a fort called
Charlesfort. Ribault left his
men to get some more supplies
and food from England. While
he was gone, the settlers
fought with Native Americans
and ran out of food. They
decided to return to France.
Juan Pardo
Juan Pardo, like Hernando de
Soto, was also from Spain. He
and his men were looking for
riches (like gold and silver) and
he wanted to claim the land for
France. He landed on Parris
Island and renamed it Santa
Elena (it was Charlesfort). This
settlement did not last because
the Native Americans attacked
and destroyed their forts.
William Hilton
William Hilton was from
England. He landed on Hilton
Head Island, which is now
named after him. Hilton was
looking for good land to grow
crops and build plantations, like
the land in Barbados. English
people who were living in
Barbados moved to Hilton Head
to start settlements.
Dr. Henry Woodward
Dr. Henry Woodward was also
an English explorer. He, along
with his men, wanted to start
an English colony, or group.
They landed along the Ashley
River and started a settlement
called Charles Town. He
learned many Native American
languages and also helped the
settlers trade with the Native
Americans. Charles Town was
the first permanent English
settlement.
