2017 Japan Tour Lesson 1

Japan Tour 2017
Japanese Money and Currency Conversions
The Japanese currency is the yen, indicated by the symbol ¥. In Japanese it is pronounced as
‘en’ and is written as 円.
Coins exist in denominations of:
¥1, ¥5, ¥10, ¥50, ¥100 and ¥500.
The coins are all
marked in
numerals,
except for
the ¥5.
Bank notes exist in denominations of:
¥1,000, ¥2,000, ¥5,000 and ¥10,000.
To convert yen into Australian dollars, you need to be good at your times tables.
Divide the total number of yen by the number of yen in the dollar.
Note that the number of yen in the dollar changes daily but according to
https://www.oanda.com/currency/converter/ on October 10th (yesterday) there
were 78 yen to $1AU.

The easiest way to do this is round off the number of yen – so 78 yen becomes 80
Yen.
Example: At the 100 yen shop everything costs 100 yen. But how much is this in
dollars and cents?
Total number of yen = 100
Number of yen to the dollar = 80
100 ÷ 80 =
1.25
or take off the last ‘0’ on each number, so:
10 ÷ 8 = 1.25
So the cost of the item is $1.25
Numbers/Counting: This is where your Japanese counting comes into play! If you can count in
Japanese, then your dealings with money will be easier. Fill in the gaps.
