Year 2 Curriculum Information
We hope everyone enjoyed the Christmas holidays and we would just like to
welcome everyone back. As stated previously reading is a very high priority in
Year 2. Please try to ensure that you read with your children as often as
possible. If you do read, please sign or comment in the reading diaries. Can
we please stress the importance of spellings. Every Monday your child will be
given spellings and will be tested on a Friday. We ask that they practice these
twice a week in their spelling book or on DB Primary using the Look, Say,
Cover, Write and Check method.

events associated with the Easter story?’
English As you are aware within our English lessons we use the big write. Throughout the
spring term we will focus on a range of genres including: traditional tales, Quest
stories, information texts, instructions and poetry. Throughout these genres we will
cover a range of basic skills including:
Word - Formation of nouns using suffixes such as –ness, –er. Formation of adjectives
using suffixes such as –ful, –less. Use of the suffixes –er, –est in adjectives and
the use of –ly in Standard English to turn adjectives into adverbs. Expanded noun
phrases for description and specification
Sentences - Different types of sentences including
statement, question,
exclamation or command.
Text - Correct choice and consistent use of present tense and past tense
throughout
writing. Use of the progressive form of verbs in the present and past tense
to mark actions in progress.
Punctuation - Use of capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation
marks to demarcate sentences. Commas to separate items in a list. Apostrophes to
mark where letters are missing in spelling and to mark singular possession in nouns.
Terminology for pupils - noun, noun phrase, statement, question, exclamation, command,
compound, suffix, adjective, adverb, verb, tense (past, present) apostrophe, comma.

Homework
To be given out each Friday. The homework will alternate between English and
Maths. The homework is to be returned by the following Wednesday to be
marked. Spelling folders are given on a Monday and they need to be returned
by Friday of the same week
