Is Your Teen Running on Empty...?

Teenagers are busy people. I know, you’re rolling your eyes as your thinking of your son or daughter sitting on the couch for hours on end or sleeping in ‘til noon on a weekend… However, they are very busy –even if it’s not always visible. They’re growing, hor‐
mones are racing and emotions are on a regular rollercoaster. They’re dealing with social and sports activities, peer pressure, family pressure, homework … and the future is looming. Make sure your teen is ready to take on the world every day by helping them to get a good night’s sleep every night. Sleep is a natural energizer. Sleep is food for the brain. While your teen sleeps, important body func‐
tions and brain activity occur. Skipping sleep can be harmful—it affects their appearance and their mood. Being tired can make it hard them to get along with family and friends and even hurt their performance at school and in sports. A body that’s in need of sleep will get it, even when it’s not expected (falling asleep at a desk or even behind the wheel). When your teen’s not getting enough sleep, they are more likely to have an accident, injury, or illness. What you need to know to help your teen:  Sleep is vital to your teen’s health and well‐
being—as important as the air they breathe, the water they drink and the food they eat. It can help them to make better eating choices and manage life’s stresses.  Middle school and high school teens need any where from 8 to 10 hours of sleep to function best.  Students who typically stay up late and sleep in late on the weekends, actually hurt the quality of their sleep.  When your teen doesn’t get sufficient sleep, their body may suffer from sleep disorders, such as narcolepsy, insomnia, restless legs syndrome or sleep apnea (all treatable by the way). Not Getting Enough Sleep May:  Limit your teen’s ability to learn, listen, concentrate, solve problems, and lead to forgetfulness;  Make your teen more prone to pimples, acne and other skin problems;  Lead to aggressive or inappropriate be‐
havior such as yelling, bullying or being im‐
patient with others;  Cause your teen to over eat or eat un‐
healthy foods (tired bodies tend to crave sweets and fried foods) leading to unwanted weight gain.  May increases their desire to use stimulants such as caffeine or nicotine. What Works:  Make sleep a priority. Help you teen decide what they need to change to get enough sleep to stay healthy, hap‐
py, and smart!  Make their bedroom sleep worthy: keep it cool, quiet and dark. If need be, get eyeshades or blackout curtains.  No pills, vitamins or energy drinks can replace good sleep. Caffeine close to bedtime will interfere with sleep—avoid coffee, tea, caffeinated soda/pop.  Avoid heavy eating or exercising right before bed.  Don’t leave homework for the last minute.  Try to avoid TV, computer and phones for an hour before bed—the light emitted stimulates the brain. Find quiet, calm activi‐
ties, to help them fall asleep more easily!  Set bed‐times and wake‐times and stick to them, even on the weekends.  A routine signals your teen’s body that it’s time for bed (i.e., taking a bath or shower, listen‐
ing to soothing music or reading a book). If you have any ques ons or need more sugges ons, give us a call at 906‐293‐9271. Or stop in to see us. We’re lo‐
