Sant Antoni in Pollensa
Saint Anthony was a bit of a
hard nut in his day. Resigning
himself to seclusion in the
desert, he was repeatedly
tempted by the devil. During
these desert dwelling days,
Anthony the Great came
upon the satyr and the
centaur. But after a good dose
of scaring the creatures gave
up and helped him along his
way and even asked for his
blessing. The monk continued
and found a plate of silver
and gold coins, which he
duly rejected as a devilish
temptation. Hiding in a cave
to escape the devil, Anthony
was beaten half to death by
demons saved only by a flash
of light that frightened the
beasts away.
Accompanied by his faithful
black piglet the whole time,
Anthony is known for his
love of animals and his talent
at healing them – he became
their Patron Saint. He and his
team of monks were also very
good at healing people, in
particular those with Ergots
Disease. The gangrenous
poisoning became known
as the ‘holy fire’ and ‘Saint
Anthony’s Fire’.

The Pines New Set
of Wheels
Lions Trips to the
BSO
The cart that transports the
pine to Pollensa will debut
this year with spanking new
wheels, that will hopefully
guarantee safety after last
year’s crash on the way back
from Ternelles. Craftsman
Fernando Perianes installed
metal wheels and has
guaranteed that the new
material will have a greater
resistance than those of
wood. “Perianes has taken
samples and used some of the
wheel parts of the old cart
that took the Pine of Sant
Antoni many years ago,” said
a council spokesman, who
thanked the craftsman for
his “magnificent work”. The
wheels that were damaged
last year are undergoing a
restoration by a craftsman
from Sineu and “it is not
ruled out that in the future
they can be reused whenever
they guarantee an optimal
level of security,” the council
concluded.
As TOTN is delivered on 12th
January, concert-goers will be
heading down to Palma to see
the violinist Francisco Fullana

New Lights in
Pollensa
The Council of Pollensa has
drafted an energy efficiency
plan, totalling €447,392
funded by the Department
of Local Cooperation of the
Consell, that will focus on
Passeig Voramar in the Port,
with the replacement of
lampposts. Also there will be
new lights along the streets
Temple Fielding, Cavall
Bernat and Cecil Metel,
among others.
La Gola Report
The management company
in charge of running the
Gola Ornithological Park,
the Fundacio Natura Parc,
have issued their annual
report stating that while most
visitors are happy with the
park, they feel that domestic
animals, mostly dogs and
cats, and general vandalism
are the main problem.
Neighbours complain about
the dog mess, littering, stray
cats, and destruction of the
benches. However, it’s not
all bad. The report for 2016
also states that La Gola has
2
improved a lot compared to a
decade ago when part of the
park was used for parking
and the wooded area as
uncontrolled landfill. Since
the park opened, 85 species
of bird have been detected
and some of them have been
successfully reared in the
environmental area of the
park. The park has also been
used for visiting school trips
and numerous activities were
held throughout the year. So
there are some real positives.
Plans are being drawn up to
make improvements such as
controlling and minimizing
the presence of dogs.
Puerto Alcudia on
for a good 2017
The port of Alcudia is now
an established alternative to
the Port of Palma, according
to reports this week. Alcudia
first welcomed cruise ships
in 2012, a year later there
were three, two in 2014, five
in 2015 and six in 2016. For
2017 there are already 14
reservations. The first is due
to dock on March 31st and
they will continue through
to October 29th. The success
is due to the proximity of
the beach, the Old Town
and a wide range of leisure
activities and excursions, the
town’s head of tourism, Joan
Gaspar Vallori told press.
Cultural Interest
Protection in
Pollensa
The Consell de Mallorca has
reactivated the declaration of
the old town of Pollensa as a
Property of Cultural Interest
(BIC), a declaration that was
initially paralyzed six years
ago by a groupd of builders
and owners who mobilized en
masse until they managed to
stop the file at the beginning
of the economic crisis.
In 2010, the City Council of
Pollença, headed by the then
Mayor Joan Cerdà, took sides
with the businessmen and
architects and the protection
of the old town was put on
standby waiting for a more
propitious moment.
Now, the Council of Pollensa
led by Miquel Àngel March
is clearly in favour of the BIC
statement, as proposed by
the Consell de Mallorca. It
has requested, however, that
the processing of the file be
postponed to coordinate with
the approval of the municipal
catalogue of heritage.
Struggle for La Vila
Urbanization
It has been 53 years since the
plan for the urbanization of
Vilà in Pollensa was approved
but the development of
the area has never been
completed. The owners have
run out of patience and are
no longer willing to wait for
a competent administration
to take the lead of the project.
The group of neighbours
has decided to exhaust the
administrative route in the
council and in the Consell if
necessary, before resorting
to the judicial route. This
was the explanation made
by lawyer and specialist
in Urbanism, Leopoldo
de Miquel, who leads the
neighborhood claims. The
Administrative Association
of Cooperation El Vilà
de Pollença met Tuesday
night in an extraordinary
meeting at the Yacht Club
in Puerto Pollensa to agree
on the strategy to follow.
The 22 owners unanimously
agreed to address a letter
to the mayor, formally
requesting the reactivation
of the urbanization and
demanding damages, due
to the municipal inactivity
taking into account that
urbanization should be
developed by a system
of cooperation. The
urbanization of Vilà has
been blocked for many
years for different reasons,
among others because of the
constant debates about its
visual impact.

ESRA Christmas Lunch from Howard Mullen
106 members and guests of
ESRA North gathered at
Restaurant Ca’n Josep Ca
Vostra in Puerto Pollensa
last month for their Annual
Christmas Lunch. Nicki Lisles
entertained as they arrived
until lunch was served. The
delegated diners from each
table donned their chef’s
hat and apron and carved
a perfectly cooked turkey
for their table. After the
meal came the traditional
table raffle for a poinsettia
organized by founder
member John Sandford. This
year there was an additional
present on each table and a
second draw was made, for a
bottle of Brandy. Lunch was
rounded off with coffee and
mince pies and Nicki Lisles
returned to the mic for the
dancing to commence.
To conclude the event,
ESRA North auctioned off
two flight tickets to Paris,
which they had received as a
donation. The bidding started
low but was eventually won
with a bid of €175 by Mick
and Jessie Elliot. This money
will be added to the charity
pot and distributed to the
two Charities, Afama and
Prodis that ESRA North is
supporting.

The 2017 Calendar
The winner is...
Some of you will have
spotted the Bird Watching
and Country Walking 2017
Calendar in Puerto Pollensa
and Pollensa’s tourist offices
but no matter how many
times you see it, the winning
cover photo hits you every
time with its stunning beauty.
Taken by amateur
photographer, Rob
Cullingworth, the starry
skies of Cala Gossallba on
the Formentor coast take the
‘magic hour’ to the extreme.
A resident on the island,
Rob lives in Esporles and is
originally from the UK, he
plans to turn his photography
into a full-time career. He told
TOTN this week that, “This
was the first competition I
entered and was very happy
to have won!... I have had
various jobs and now hope
to be my own boss with the
photography.” It’s no surprise
that this marks the beginning
of a new career. To see more
of his work, which includes
his specialities of nature and
landscape and a number of
different styles, look for him
on instagram,
@robcullingworthphoto.
The rest of the calendar is
a showpiece for landscapes
across the region. Birds and
wildlife are a big feature as
they were in the 2016 edition
but with a wider scope of
the Tramuntana Mountain
Range, photographers
could make good use of the
largest Natural Park and
nature reserve on Mallorca.
Stretching from its most
southern point at Sant Elm to
the northern point at Cap de
Formentor, the park covers
an area of 1,000 sq km and
has a number of mountains
over 1,000m. The highest
of these is the Puig Major,
which overlooks the Cuber
Reservoir, one of the main
water supplies for the Island
as well as a major destination
for bird watchers and hikers.
In 2011 the Tramuntana was
declared a World Heritage
site by UNESCO and is
regarded as the jewel in the
crown of the Balearics. This
calendar with nearly 50
stunning images is a true
testament to its beauty.

Mesclat by
Dos Perellons
It was a huge success and continued
to expand. In 1973 it became a limited
company with the name Dos Perellons.
After 125 years, it is still an artisan,
family company, run by the fourth
generation with the fifth already
learning the trade.
Mesclat literally means mixed, and
this bottle of traditional liqueur is a
combination of aniseed with Palo de
Mallorca. Palo is a sweet dark liqueur
made from caramelized sugar and
flowering plants (namely cinchona and
gentian). While we may see pyjamaclad cristianos roaming the streets late
on August 2nd with a bottle in hand,
it is worth savouring it. Dos Perellon
recommend serving it as cold as possible,
perhaps with ice, and in a stemmed glass.
Much more civilized. Salut!

Spanish Conversation:
New Year’s Resolutions
Previous lessons from Valeria form the general groundwork
and help to form full sentences. Now we look at how you can
use these skills in different scenarios. This week we look at
how you can use Spanish tenses to talk about your New Year’s
Resolutions.
Do you have a New Years resolution?
Tienes objetivos nuevos este año ?
My New Years resolution is to lose weight and get fit.
Mi nuevo objetivo es perder peso y estar en forma.
So the same as last year?
El mismo que el del año pasado, entonces ?
Yes but this time I’ll do it!
Sí, pero esta vez lo haré!

Casa Sandra!
You can use different verb tenses to express your New Year’s
Resolutions. For example the future tense:
I am going to read more
Voy a leer más.
I am going to eat 5 fruit and vegetables every day
Voy a comer 5 frutas y verduras cada dia.
I am going to exercise every morning before work
Voy a hacer gimnasia cada mañana antes de trabajar.
The subjunctive (that sounds technical and tricky but it’s
not all that difficult, we’ll explain more about it next time):
I hope that I can get promoted
Espero que me asciendan.
I hope to lose weight
Espero que pierda peso.
I hope to learn a new language
Espero que aprenda otra lengua.
And finally commands. Well, if you say it like you mean it,
perhaps it will happen!
Work on Spanish every day!
Trabajar en mi español cada dia!
Walk to work rather than drive!
Caminar al trabajo en lugar de conducir!
Go to the gym at least three times a week!
Ir al gimnasio al menos 3 veces por semana!

Mallorca is a land blighted
by invaders, whether they
are Dragut and his men,
or pirates looting and
kidnapping, or warring
Muslims fighting to conquer
the island. It’s because of
this that you see all along
the coastline Torres or
Watchtowers, much like
the one in Canyamel that
featured in TOTN last
spring. And much like the
torre in the Castell del
Capdepera. This castle holds
much importance in the
history of Mallorca because
it was from here that the
surrender of Menorca was
accomplished. King James I
of Aragon, having conquered
Mallorca, knew he needed
his troops for the future
conquest of Valencia, so he
devised a ploy to deceive the
Muslims on Menorca and
cause them to surrender. To
do this, he ordered a large
number of bonfires to be lit
in Capdepera, so many that
they could be seen from the
neighbouring island. Indeed
they were and the Saracen
Menorcans believed that
a large army was camped
there, preparing to invade
Menorca. The ruse worked
and James I signed the Treaty
of Capdepera, through which
the Menorcan Muslims were
allowed to remain there in
submission to the King of
Aragon.
The Romans were the first to
build here and their fortress
was later enlarged by the
Moors. This was destroyed
during the Christian
invasions but another
structure was erected in
the same location in the
fourteenth century.
King James II founded the
town of Capdepera in 1300,
and ordered the scattered
population to build the
walled enclosure surrounding
one of its watchtowers now
known as Miquel Nunis.
Its strategic location on a
hill allowed them to view
the adjacent lands and sea
channel separating the two
islands. Residents hid in the
walled fortress when the
town was under siege. Legend
has it that once fog steered
invaders off course and the
townsfolk were saved. The
miracle is celebrated every
year at the town’s annual
fiesta.
The castle was occupied by
military troops up to 1854
when it was abandoned. From
then until 1983 it was under
private ownership. At that
time the owners donated
it to the Capdepera Town
Council. In 2000 the council
organized a celebration of
the 700th year since the
founding of the castle. It
is open all year round for
visitors to explore the ancient
sites.
Open 9-5pm until 16th March
when it is open until 8pm.
www.castellcapdepera.com
When you have finished
your tour of the castle, a
great place to get lunch or
dinner is on the promenade
at Cala Rajada. Heaving
in the summer, this little
resort town is completely
different in the winter with
a number of good bars and
restaurants still open, there
is still life even though there
are no people of the beautiful
beaches.

The Mallorquinista
Unacceptable
The American owner of Real Mallorca, Robert Sarver, was
present at the disastrous defeat of his team at Numancia on
18th December – the last game before the Christmas break.
Reporters were asking him for his reaction and he repeatedly
said “ Unacceptable, unacceptable, unacceptable” in English.
Never has one word so accurately described a performance by
a football team.
Mallorca now have consecutive tough away games at Getafe
and Reus before the next home game on the 29th January, 6pm
kick off, against Cadiz.
After the home defeat by Valladolid earlier in the month,
as predicted in the last edition of Talk of the North, head
coach Fernando Vazquez was dismissed and B-Team Coach
Javier Olaizola appointed in his place. A former playing hero
of the club, this was welcomed by the fans although his first
two matches in charge led to ignominious defeats. He was
asked about Sarver being present in Numancia and responded
defiantly “I am glad he was there so that he could see how poor
the squad is”.
The islanders were outclassed and out played and a late strike
by substitute Lekic flattered the visitors.
Could things get any worse? Of course they could. Reports
began surfacing that the squad flew to Madrid after the
Numancia game so they could disperse to their home areas for
the Christmas festivities. Around 7 or 8 of them were spotted
in a Madrid nightclub until the early hours of the morning.
The club’s supporters took to social media in their droves to
condemn this frivolity by the players after such a dreadful
effort earlier that day.
Olaizola has called for reinforcements in the winter transfer
window and full back Saul Garcia arrived from Deportivo La
Coruña on loan. Another player targeted is midfielder Alex
Gallar who has scored 10 goals for Cultural Leonesa in the
Segunda Liga B. High wage earners need to be discarded,
in particular Oscar Diaz who has proved to be a huge
disappointment.

Almeria 2 -1 Real Mallorca
Numancia 3-1 Real Mallorca
The ridicule of Numancia was how the Spanish press dubbed
this fiasco. Brandon Thomas was booked on the stroke of
half time for protesting that the home side’s second goal was
offside. Replays later showed that the goal was perfectly valid.
However Brandon continued his protests in the tunnel and was
shown a second yellow card and dismissed from the game. He
is a young player of genuine quality but seriously let his team
mates down in this instance.
Real Mallorca 2-0 Mirandes
On the day of the Three Kings, Mallorca gave their long
suffering fans a welcome present with goals from Lekic and
Lago Junior in the final ten minutes. Olaizola promoted
B-Team winger James Davis (American father and a mother
from Equatorial Guinea) to the team and he responded with
a man of the match performance of pace and skill before
going off injured. The three points took Mallorca out of the
relegation zone for the time being.
