Why Perth Airport
is important
‡
Perth Airport supports job growth, tourism and leisure, and
provides economic, social, cultural and lifestyle benefits.
Who is Perth Airport?
In 1997, the operation and management of Perth Airport
was transferred from the Commonwealth of Australia to
Westralia Airports Corporation (WAC) under a 50 year
lease, with a 49 year option for extension. In 2011, WAC
changed its trading name to Perth Airport Pty Ltd.
As a private company, Perth Airport receives no State or
Commonwealth government funding.
Perth Airport estimates that
approximately 80 per cent of its
shares are held for the benefit of
Australian superannuants and
Australian citizens.

We are Australia’s fourth largest airport in terms of
passenger numbers and the principal international,
interstate and intrastate airport in Western Australia.
Perth Airport is located 12 kilometres east of the Perth
Central Business District (CBD) and is integrated with
other transport infrastructure, including the Kewdale rail
freight facility, major highway networks and via these
roads, to Fremantle Port.
Airline services
Perth Airport operates 24/7 and provides
an essential link for business and leisure
travel and, importantly, meets the needs of:
• regional communities and the resource sector,
• interstate travel, and
• international access to multiple global
hub airports.
Maintaining operational flexibility is essential to
supporting Western Australia’s economy. Perth Airport
is part of a national and global aviation network and, as
such, flight times and schedules are not directly
controlled locally.
Any restrictions on the operations of Perth Airport
would result in significantly fewer air services being
available to Western Australians and visitors to the
State, and services would become more costly.
2034
Passenger growth
forecast
Western Australian communities and companies have
benefited from the significant growth of commercial air
services operating at Perth Airport.
Interesting facts:
• In the past five years, the number of new
international destinations serviced directly
from Perth has increased. With the
commencement of Etihad in July 2014,
Perth will be only the second city in Australia
to offer services from all three major Middle
East airlines.
• Along with a seasonal service to Christchurch,
the number of international destinations
directly served from Perth has risen to 18.
• The introduction of three new international
airlines, and an additional 790,000 inbound
international aircraft seats, has resulted in
more competitive international airfares to
and from Perth.
• The number of international airlines has further
increased with the commencement of Scoot
in December 2013 and Etihad in July 2014.
• Aircraft seats connecting regional Western
Australia to Perth, and through to the rest of
Australia and overseas has increased by
2013
14.7 per cent annually since 2009.
2009
Increased service frequency between Perth and other
cities has added to the convenience of travel to these
destinations, and supported economic development in
Perth and the State.
