Dear LiNK Members,
As Natasha is on maternity leave, I thought
this would be an appropriate time for me to
introduce myself as the new president of HCSB.
First, let me say congratulations to Natasha and
her husband John on the birth of their baby boy,
Jaxson Drake Phillips. He came into the world
healthy and happy on June 8.

Many of you probably know who I am, but for
those who don’t, here’s a short history. My
Dad, Gary Vander Wilt retired last year after
having worked for HCSB and Brown-Hurst
Insurance for 27 years. I had the pleasure of
working alongside my Dad at Brown-Hurst
Insurance since 2001. That was the year that
my wife, Maggie, and I moved back to our
hometown of Eldora. We wanted to raise our
family in the small town, community minded
atmosphere Eldora offered to us, not to mention
living minutes away from both our families. My
wife and I have four children, Hanna (11th
grade), Jacob (9th grade), Joshua (5th grade)
and Jonah (1st grade) who keep us very busy
with all their activities. When not coaching or
playing alongside my children, I enjoy playing
golf and basketball. I also find satisfaction in
volunteering my time for the Greater Eldora
Youth Sports Programs, Rotary Club, and at our
church, Steamboat Rock Baptist. What’s Inside
Member FDIC
Jim Brown will continue to have a leadership
role at the bank as the CEO and Chairman of the
Board. I have been training to take this position
for many years now under Jim’s tutelage and
American Banker’s Association educational
programs. I’m actively involved in State
banking associations and peer groups. You may
be wondering if you will see any changes at
HCSB under my leadership. The only changes
I hope to make are to continue to improve on
our already excellent service and financial
products. We have a great staff who are
knowledgeable and ready to serve your needs. David Vander Wilt

surfers gather from all over the world with waves ranging
from 2 to 40 feet! Rich with island history, Haleiwa is now
the social and artistic hub of the North Shore. No trip

Annual HCSB Golf Classic
The HCSB Annual Golf Classic was held on Thursday, June
25. For the past several years, HCSB has closed its doors
and hosted a golf tournament to raise funds for cancer
research and area schools. This year the tournament raised
$2500 for BCLUW Special Projects and South Hardin
High School Fine Arts. We also sent a check to the Holden
Cancer Research Center at the University of Iowa for $1500.
We are deeply grateful for our sponsors and to all those
who enjoyed the day with us and donated to these worthy
causes! We look forward to the 2016 event!

Hashtag
The Internet has transformed this symbol from the
rarely used button on your phone into one of the
most common symbols on the web. This symbol has
many names including hash-mark, number sign,
and octothorpe (for the eight lines emanating from
the center square), but hashtag specifically refers to a
word or clause preceded by the # which can be used to
search for or identify a topic.
Blog (Blawg)
Then was LOL first used?
Dating back to the late 1980’s,
LOL may be the first widely
used Internet initialism. As
you probably already know, it
stands for “laughing out loud”
and is used to express laughter
when communicating online.
Previously, though this same
abbreviation was used in a very
different way to describe an
elderly woman, or a “little old
lady.”
MOOC (mook)
The newest addition to the English language, the
abbreviation MOOC stands for massive (or massively)
open online course. Many online companies and notfor-profits have started producing classes with video
instruction, student forums, and quizzes or exams that
are open to thousands, and potentially millions, of
students. How long and in what forms these MOOCs
will persist is yet to be seen, but the term has definitely
proved useful in discussing this new style of education.

What did the word blog originally stand for?
Though often maligned, blogs have become a mainstay
of the web. Many well-respected media sites and
companies call their regularly
updated pages a blog. The word
is a clipped form of the clunkier
weblog which dates from the
early 1990’s. In 1999 Peter
Merholz coined blog when he
decided to call his weblog his
“wee blog” or just “blog” for
short. This term took off, and
soon people were using blog as
a verb.

software application, but they are typically delivered
via the web, not another tool like a CD-ROM.

Malware
Often spread via a virus,
malware is a computer
system, or mobile device.
The term is a portmanteau
of malicious (a term of Latin
origin meaning “desiring to
cause injury or harm”) and
the new-fangled suffix –ware.
The combining form –ware
is an extracted form from
the term software and has
been used to refer to any
specific kind of software, as
in spyware and shareware.

download coevolved with the term upload, as one must
it stand for? Well, there is little evidence that the term
Wi-Fi is a shortening of “wireless fidelity.” However it is upload something before it can be downloaded. Today,
though, the term download is used much more often
most likely an iteration of hi-fi, meaning “high fidelity”
than its counterpart
which refers to the sound quality of vinyl records.
Today Wi-Fi is a trademarked term that refers to any

Since the launch of the Apple App Store in 2008 and the connection of computer networks. The longer original

term app has become very prominent. It is a clipped
