Welcome New Members
As I write this, Summer is winding down and Fall is in the
air here at Minnehaha Country Club. It is my favorite time
of year as the leaves turn colors and the hours of daylight
become shorter. It's fitting that this is the time of year that the
MCC President’s term also winds down. When I started this
term, I indicated that I wanted to focus on excellent service
in all areas while planning strategically for our future and
preserving our great history. Hopefully, we made progress in all three of those areas.
Todd and Sara Stone
Richard and Barb Fries
While the weather is changing, the number of activities at MCC is not slowing down. Fall golf
is a great time to get outside and enjoy the course. Take note of our greatly improved ponds…
hopefully, we finally found the solution to the Duckweed! There will be some maintenance
activities that will occur, but there will be 18 holes open for play. The number 8 green is
scheduled to be fine-tuned the last week in September and work on the forward tees will
continue. Inside the clubhouse, wine dinners, Halloween events for adults and kids and of
course Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Come out and enjoy all the activities!
So, while my President’s term concludes, there are other changes that will occur with the
Board at our October 27 meeting. First, I want to extend my thanks to Steve Herman has he
concludes his five year term on the Board. Steve’s skills, dedication and commitment have been
greatly appreciated by management and the Board. Concurrently, we will be welcoming a new
Board member, Mark Arndt. Mark and his family are long-time MCC members who have
been very active in MCC. I look forward to working with Mark in my final year on the Board.
Finally, I will be passing the President’s gavel on to Keel Coddington. Keel comes with excellent
experience as he was President back in 1992, and for reasons that none of us can figure out, he
agreed to do this again! Best wishes to Keel on the next twelve months.
It has been my honor and pleasure to serve as your President this past year. It has truly been a
challenging and rewarding experience and the best part has been meeting so many of our great
members. Thank you for the opportunity.
See you at the Club!

Minnehaha Country Club announces
that it has been awarded the prestigious
Distinguished Gold Club of the World
award, as determined by the annual
Distinguished Clubs of the World award
program conducted by BoardRoom
magazine, one of the most respected
trade publications serving private clubs.
As we continue to look at the best opportunities to improve member communication and
deliver pertinent, readable, informative information, I will be changing the delivery form for the
newsletter article for each printing. I invite your comments, suggestions and ideas for this new
format. We wish you and your families a wonderful fall season!
Did you know?
• Minnehaha Country Club started at, what now is McKennan Park, in 1905. The first country club in South Dakota!
• The Minnehaha Country Club is one of 178 Distinguished Clubs of the World with a Gold Club honor!
• The staff members at Minnehaha Country Club undergo more than 1000 hours of training in their fields of endeavor each year. Our
goal is 2000 hours by 2018 to improve service and amenities for you, our members!
• Minnehaha Country Club is a certified Audobon Golf Sanctuary, the only one in North or South Dakota!
• The combined kitchen's and ground’s staff “COMPOST” more than 200,000 pounds of food waste each year, saving the landfills of
Sioux Falls and the surrounding area. The ground’s staff uses the grass clippings and leaves to create some “super food” for the turf!
• Minnehaha Country Club is one of 49 clubs in the United States to earn an award of merit for our wine program from 2011 – 2015.
We do not yet know our award for 2016. Oh, by the way, there are almost 5,000 clubs in North America.
• The Staff at Minnehaha Country Club donates more than $10,000 each year to charities like the Food Pantry, Saint Francis House,
Family Visitation, The Back Pack Program and many more.
• Each and every staff member in the Minnehaha Country Club kitchen is “Serv Safe” certified and maintains their certification
through education.
• All cardboard, paper, plastic and clear glass is recycled through the recycling program at Novak Sanitary to, once again, keep the
landfill at Sioux Falls sustainable!
• There are 14 committees with more than 100 Club members that serve in an advisory capacity to help the Board of Directors govern
Minnehaha Country Club and increase participation of Club Governance. If you are interested please let me know!
Good Health to All,
Ted

Fall Notes and the Range
As of late summer, the golf course has held its own in a moderate
year of stresses to the grass. Looking back it was nice to see a dry
year with timely rains to help keep things relatively firm. In a
drier season like 2016, the golf course showed its colors often as
it was easier to keep things dry without too much stress. The nice
weather was also helpful in promoting a gain in the bentgrass
population in the fine turf and drought tolerant species in the
rough. A good dry year is nice because we are able to slowly
choke out the poa annua and other weak grasses that can take
over after a wet period or from shaded conditions. The cooler fall
weather and recent rain will promote good growing conditions
again and help tremendously as we prepare for winter and spring
golf. Life is good.
The driving range will be getting more attention in the near
future and beyond. For many reasons, the driving range can
be a maintenance struggle at times. Further, I do understand
the frustration of the range being closed. It is understood that
some are disappointed that the range tee closes early on Monday
evenings and a little later on Thursday evening to pick balls. This is
due to the mowing schedule of the range, range tees and #9 rough.
The entire range is closed and mowed each Tuesday until 10 am.
Also, the range tee area and #9 rough is also mowed on Friday
mornings to keep things clean and tidy, which requires the front
range tees to be closed a little early on Thursday evenings.
We understand the demand and will now try to implement the
back bentgrass tee of the driving range for the diehards during
Thursday evenings. This tee was expanded for this very reason
3
and for other always inconvenient maintenance improvements to
the front tees. The short game area is open all day, every day.
Lastly, we plan to strip, level and reseed 2 of the 4 ryegrass
tees early this fall. The upper ryegrass tee near the parking lot
and the lower wedge tee are in serious need of leveling, while
the poa annua grass also dominates this stand. Ideally, the
leveling should create a significant increase in the teeing area
with new, pure, fun ryegrass to hit from. Once we implement
a convenient schedule of using the bentgrass tee at the back of
the range, more options will be available for other range tee
improvements as needed.
• This year was also a banner year for many, many weeds. Be sure
to apply herbicide this fall if your lawn is weedier than normal.
• Also, we have a new turf pest to the area. Japanese beetles
are now in Sioux Falls and are probably another reason for a
higher than average grub population this year. Japanese beetles
are a major pest to golf courses, lawns, linden trees, other
ornamental trees and rose bushes. More on this next spring.
Enjoy some great fall golf!

Dave Swift – Grounds Superintendent
I hope everyone wanting to experience the Ryder Cup was able to make the trip and had as much fun
as the winners of our Ryder Cup raffle. Congratulations to Jacob Stahl, Jon Kirby, Aaron Canfield,
Larry Canfield, Trudy Clifft, RJ Clifft and Ellie Keirnes. I also hope everyone is able to come out and
see the NCAA Women’s Super Regional “Fall Preview” on October 3rd & 4th. Twelve teams from
around the conferences (22 teams are in the region) will come out and compete in a preliminary tournament to get a feel for the course
in advance of the NCAA Super Regionals to be held on May 8, 9 & 10 of 2017. The Super Regionals are the final step to make it to the
National Championships. Three of our members are the host coaches, with Augustana being the host school. I am sure with the Super
Regionals, we will be looking for volunteers so keep your eyes open for the letter from Coaches Peggy Kirby, Patty Coddington or Kaari
Espeland late winter or early spring.
Signups have begun for our 4th Annual Net Winter Tournament Series on our simulator. We will again have men’s, ladies and
couples divisions playing rounds throughout the winter months. We have made this year’s tournament series much easier to
complete your rounds so make sure to check in Golf Shop for all of the details. We have selected 4 courses that you will play with
your partner (these are not matches) in different formats and we will have a winner for each course and then over-all champions
with the lowest total score. We will be using your SDGA handicap for the tourney so don’t worry about having a little rust on the
swing. This winter series will help grease the wheels. We look forward to seeing you throughout the winter months enjoying your
simulator and all of the amenities at the club.
Our Fall merchandise has arrived from Polo, Peter Millar, Filson, Fennec/Martin and Nike. Get it while it’s hot! Many of you already
know, but I wanted to remind everyone that your Golf Shop is a licensed FILSON dealer and the Upland apparel is in stock and ready
to be used in the field. We stock a good amount of not just what you might need while in the field, but getting there as well. Filson is not
just a hunting company, they carry many lifestyle pieces, luggage and much more, so stop in to the Golf Shop and see the many things
we have to offer in the “off ” season as well. We have our winter apparel arriving bi-weekly throughout the next couple of months in
collections, so make sure to stop in and see what has just arrived.
Golf Shop Credits Will Expire at the End of the Calendar Year (12/31/16)
You don’t want to lose out…you played hard for those winnings. This is a reminder that the Golf Shop credits expire at the end of each
calendar year. This is a necessary accounting issue, so thank you in advance for clearing the balance of your credit book. Thank you.
Golf Shop Hours:
With less daylight hours, we will be reducing the hours for the range and Golf Shop. The Golf Shop will be closing on Mondays for the
season once our greens have been sanded.

MCC Automatic Payment Service
March 1 – August 31 • September 1 – February 28
The Automatic Payment Service makes paying your Minnehaha
Country Club bill even easier. By enrolling in this service, your
member bill will be paid each month automatically and always on
time. Each month you will continue to receive your MCC member
statement showing the amount due. On the 15th day of each
month (or the Monday following if the 15th is on a weekend), your
authorized financial institution will deduct the amount owing from
your designated account and your MCC member account will be
credited. This allows you adequate time to review your member
statement before it is paid.
Membership Resignation Policy
A member may resign by written notice to the Club. The effective
date and end of privileges will be determined by the following criteria:
MCC’s memberships are effective from June 1 to May 31. Requests to
reduce one’s membership from one of a higher level will be governed
by this same policy as well.
Member Event Cancellation Policy
All reservations made for club functions or holiday events that are
not canceled 24 hours prior to the event will be charged in full. For
example, if you reserve a table for 8 for Easter Brunch and only 6
people show for the reservation, you will be charged for 8 people. On
several occasions, we have reached our seating capacity and have not
been able to accommodate some members, only to have last minute
cancellations and no shows.
The benefits of signing up for the Automatic Payment
Service are: No Late Payments, No Checks, No Envelopes, It’s
Free, No Stamps, No Hassles, Saves Time.
If you are interested in the Automatic Payment Service, or if you
have any questions or need more information on how this easy
service works, you may pick up a form in the club office or call
Jerry Olivier at 605.336.1085.

The Buzz In the Kitchen
Bon Jour!
Another summer season at MCC is in the books and I hope
everyone has enjoyed themselves with what summer had to offer.
Looking into the future, I’m thrilled to get back into the swing of
wine dinners along with cooking classes.
Some events to be thinking about will be my Hunnicut Wine
dinner October 18th. Some wonderful wines paired with my
creative ways. A German class will follow and we’ll be making
and baking fresh pretzels, spätzle’s and poached pears with
lingonberries. To round out the month, MCC will host their
annual Halloween brigade of events with a haunted house.
