the Newsletter

During October we were busy starting to put the garden
to bed for the winter. It seems like yesterday we were
just starting to plant. We had a good harvest this year
of cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, onions, garlic,
gourds, herbs, flowers, peas, beans, and much more.
Many of our residents participated in our gardening
group. Their knowledge is such an asset to our success
in the garden.

NOVEMBER
We also kept busy with crafters group, Zumba, and
regular daily exercise group. Our Wednesday horseshoe
Group is always great fun, and lots of laughs.
The residents also enjoyed bingo, prayer group, book
club, sing-a-longs, puzzles and games, movie matinees,
as well as Sunday Football. Our Commissary Cart is a
big hit. Every Thursday afternoon we bring the cart out.
The residents can than purchase personal care items,
stamps, puzzles books and snacks. It has been very
successful.
OCTOBER RECap
We are so lucky to live in a place where there is
October. I read a quote recently and believe it fits us
beautifully. “Upstate New York is a wonderful place to
be in October. It is Fall at its best.”
We have taken several leaf peeping trips to Naples. It
gets better each time we venture out. Several residents
also enjoyed lunch in Canandaigua after a trip to
Naples. It was a fun morning!
We have been celebrating falls return by trying our
hand at watercolor. Our watercolor leaves are hanging
in the windows here at The Terrace. They are really
beautiful - such talent!
We have also starting baking again. We have made
homemade applesauce, gingerbread, apple crisp, as
well as pumpkin cheesecake bars. For Halloween we
will be making pumpkin whoopee pies.
Lincoln School trick or treated here at The Terrace. The
children came all dressed up in costumes and went
room to room collecting treats. I think it was more of a
treat for us to see them. We were also entertained by a
Touch of Joy, Ray Brazelton, and Paul Killion.
I hope you had a glorious October. We have enjoyed it!

Looking AHEAD TO NOVEMBER
November is upon us. It is a time of reflection,
gratitude, and thankfulness. During November we will
keep these things in mind.
We will be honoring our veterans on Veteran’s Day with
a ceremony in the living room at 10:30. Please feel free
to attend. We will also be making cards for our
Veterans at the Canandaigua VA to thank them for their
service and sacrifice.
We will be creating a gratitude tree. Please feel free to
add to it by writing on a leaf, anything that you are
grateful for.
The residents will be entertained this month by Larry
Brennan. He is a wonderful ventriloquist who has been
here before. We really enjoy him and his cast of
characters. We will also be entertained by Touch of Joy,
Ray Brazelton, and Mike Kornrich. This will provide the
residents with plenty of musical enjoyment for the
month of November. We are always looking for musical
talent here at The Terrace. If you play an instrument,
and would like to volunteer your time and
talent, I would love to speak to you.
We will be doing lots of baking in November, and filling
the air with all of those good fall smells. Of course,
eating the fruits of our labors isn’t too bad either.
During November we will be shopping at Walmart, the
Dollar Store, and Peebles. We will also be doing a lot of
crafting, book reading, puzzles, games, throwing
horseshoes and much more.
Our Terrace Thanksgiving will be November 26th at
11:30 am. Residents and Staff will sit down and enjoy
the feast that is Thanksgiving. Families are also invited
to dinner on November 27th. See the details and
information on the dinner in the November newsletter.
Enjoy your November. I wish you a wonderful
Thanksgiving!

For hope, so burdens won't enslave us
For thy forgiveness which will save us
For feast, and those with whom we share it
For loving hands that did prepare it
For all that makes this life worth living
We take this time on this Thanksgiving
To bow our heads and bend a knee
And pause to look around and see
For all that was, is, and shall be
We have none to thank, Oh Lord, but thee.
Amen.

TO OUR NEIGHBORHOOD.
For forests tall and oceans deep
for canyons wide and mountains steep
For sunset skies of pink and gold
For every sunrise we behold
DAYS TO CELEBRATE
For Winter's snow and springtime's thaw
For Summer's warmth and Autumn's awe
For roofs that keep the rain away
For walls that hold it all at bay
For work that puts food on the table
For health and rest to keep us able
For friends and family around us
For years to come, may they surround us
For soldiers fighting for our peace
For days to come when wars may cease

ROBERT TYLER
Robert (Bob) was born to Glennie and Alvin in
December of 1920 . He and his Family lived on a 100
acre farm on Pleasant Valley Rd. in Lyons. Bob went
to a country school that had one teacher to teach all
grades. He graduated from Lyons High School and
went to work on his father’s farm and learned to
drive a team of four horses. The farm had a small
herd of cows which were all milked by hand.
In 1942 Bob married Kathleen S. whom he was
married to for 71 years. They had 2 daughters, Judy
and Andrea. Judy was killed in a horse accident at
the age of 23. Andrea has 3 children. His grandchild
Jerrod Evangelist comes to visit him every Sunday
and helps him with any problems he may be having.
In 1946 Bob expanded his Guernsey herd and built a
new farm to accommodate them. In 1961 he built the
first controlled environmental chicken house in
Wayne County, holding 10,000 layers. In 1968 along
with the farming operation Bob became a part time
assessor for the Town of Lyons. In 1978 He became
full time assessor for the Town of Arcadia and Village
of Newark. Bob and Kay moved to Newark after
being on the farm for 40 years.
They had little time to travel as dairy farming is a full
time job. They usually took a 5 day vacation once a
year to visit Kay’s family in Maine. Kay and Bob both
retired in 1986.
As a hobby after retirement Bob and Kay enjoyed
going to auctions and garage sales. They enjoyed
buying carnival glass and all kinds of small antiques.
They rented a booth in Alton as well as Canandaigua
to sell items they had bought.
Bob and Kay both came to live at The Terrace in
November of 2013. Kay has since passed away.
Bob is known around the Terrace to all the dogs who
come and visit as the go to guy for dog treats.
Bob was voted in this month as president of Resident
Council.
The Terrace congratulates Bob on being Resident of
the Month.
In a large pot melt 2 tablespoons butter. Stir in
brown sugar and water. Bring to a boil, then lower
and simmer while stirring until reduced and
thickened, about 10 minutes.
Peel potatoes and cut lengthwise, then again making
long quarters. Cut these into 1-inch pieces ending
up with pie slice-shaped wedges. Place in a separate
large pot of boiling water and cook for about 5
minutes. Potatoes should give a bit when poked
with a fork.
Drain the potatoes and arrange in a single layer in a
buttered 13 by 9-inch baking dish. Pour the syrup
over the potatoes; making sure it covers the
potatoes. Place lemon slices on top and bake for 35
minutes, spooning syrup over potatoes twice during
that time. Potatoes are done when they are tender to
the fork.
Remove from the oven, remove the lemon slices,
and stir in pecans. Arrange the marshmallows
evenly on top. Place back in the oven turning it up
to 400 degrees F and cook until marshmallows puff
up and turn brown, approximately 10 more minutes.

THE ADMINISTRATOR’S CORNER
I am excited to announce that we are partnering
with The Alzheimer’s Association and will be
offering a monthly caregiver’s support group. This
meeting will be open to our families, as well as the
greater Newark community. Please join us every
third Tuesday of the month from 6 – 7 p.m. for
support with your journey as you deal with
Alzheimer’s Disease.
We are also in need of volunteers. Please help us
spread the word that our residents would like a
volunteer to help answer telephones and greet
visitors on the weekends. If you or someone you
know may be interested in providing this service,
please call Terri at 331 – 5282. Volunteering is a
wonderful way to make a positive difference.
