New Season of HOLLYWOOD IDOLS Provides Fresh Perspectives
on Film Legends’ Lives
Distributed by American Public Television and releasing on public television stations
nationwide beginning March 1, 2017, the second season of HOLLYWOOD IDOLS
provides new insights into the private and professional lives of several of America’s
great film legends.
Each episode of HOLLYWOOD IDOLS features interviews with actors and actresses’
close friends and professional colleagues, revealing intimate details about the stars’
public personas and private struggles. The biographies take viewers through the lives of
12 celebrated Hollywood personas, including Marilyn Monroe, Steve McQueen, Walter
Matthau, Alan Ladd, and Mae West. Complete with memorable clips and photos,
viewers enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at the careers of silver screen favorites.
Filled with interesting conversations and insights, HOLLYWOOD IDOLS was acquired
by American Public Television from Janson Media for syndication to public television
stations nationwide.

Episode #201 - "Marilyn Monroe: Beyond the Legend"
This episode features many of Marilyn Monroe's great moments on film,
including Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How To Marry a Millionaire, The Seven-Year
Itch, Some Like It Hot, Bus Stop, and The Misfits. The program also shares clips from
some of her earliest films, as well as home movies and archival footage. Those who
knew her best, including Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters, Sheree North, Susan
Strasberg, Celeste Holm and Josh Logan, share their memories.
Episode #202 - "Steve McQueen: Man on the Edge"
Steve McQueen was one of Hollywood's highest paid stars, and one of its most
difficult. His rise to icon and the inevitable descent which followed are chronicled by
those who watched it happen. Clips include: The Magnificent Seven, Love with the
Proper Stranger, The Cincinnati Kid, The Reivers, The Great Escape, The Thomas
Crown Affair, and Bullitt. His story is told through home movies and the recollections
of his first wife, Neile McQueen Toffel; children, Terri and Chad; actors, Chuck Norris,
Karl Malden and Don Gordon; and the friends who knew and understood him.
Episode #203 - "William Holden: The Golden Boy"
Academy Award-winner William Holden was handsome, charming and
unconventional, and never lost his power to enchant an audience. Included are
scenes from: Golden Boys, The Country Girl, Sunset Boulevard, Stalag 17, Sabrina,
The Bridge on the River Kwai, The World of Suzie Wong, and Network. Interviewees
include actors Robert Wagner, Robert Mitchum, Cliff Robertson, Stefanie Powers,
Glenn Ford, Nancy Olson and Susan Strasberg; and directors, Sydney Lumet, Blake
Edwards and Robert Wise.
Episode #204 - "Anthony Quinn: An Original"
An actor of many faces, Mexican-born Anthony Quinn appeared in more than 270
films in ethnically diverse roles ranging from an American Indian, to a Greek peasant.
Quinn told his own fascinating story, with help from actors Kirk Douglas, Anthony
Franciosa, Gina Lollobrigida, and Julie Harris; directors J. Lee Thompson, Martin Ritt,
Stanley Kramer; and Quinn's daughter Valentina, and son Lorenzo. Clips include
footage from such acclaimed films as La Strada, Viva Zapata!, Lust for Life, Lawrence
of Arabia, and Zorba the Greek.

As the first "blonde bombshell," Mae West reigned supreme and changed the
nation's view of women, sex and race. Her bawdy humor challenged taboos of the

Episode #206 - "Charlton Heston: For All Seasons"
He played king and slave, hero and villain, and was renowned for the heroic figures
he played during his early years in Hollywood: Moses, Ben-Hur, El Cid and
Michelangelo. In a wide range of roles, from classical to futuristic, he showed himself
to be the consummate actor. Here, in his own words, is Charlton Heston's life and
career. Clips include scenes from The Greatest Show on Earth, The Ten
Commandments, The Big Country, Ben-Hur, Will Penny, Soylent Green, and Planet of
the Apes.

Here is Roger Moore's own story, as told by the famous actor himself, along with the

an actress of unquestioned independence. Included are clips from Sally, Irene and

Amiable and unassuming, Fred MacMurray went from small-town boy to one of

role as father to four adopted children, in his later years his career was revived when
he became television's best-loved father in the long-running series, My Three

and Mark Wolper. Fashion designer Nolan Miller and biographers Ella Smith and Bob

Episode #211 - "Walter Matthau: Diamond in the Rough"
Academy Award winner Walter Matthau was renowned for his superb comedic
talent over the course of a long career. Featured are archival photos as well as clips
from many of his most memorable films including Charade, The Fortune Cookie, The
Odd Couple, Cactus Flower, The Sunshine Boys, Grumpy Old Men, and I'm Not
Rappaport. In addition to Walter Matthau, himself, on-screen interviewees include
actor Jack Lemmon, director Herbert Ross and writer Neil Simon.
Episode #212 - "Alan Ladd: The True Quiet Man"
In the 1942 feature film This Gun for Hire, Alan Ladd was only a supporting actor.
However, his performance as a cold, ruthless killer with a core of gentle sadness had
an impact on audiences. Teamed with Veronica Lake, he became an immediate star
and in the process, helped launch the age of film noir. Included in the program are
excerpts from Alan Ladd's most notable films: This Gun for Hire, The Great
Gatsby, and Shane.
