Friday 7th April 2017
We arrive in the morning and transfer to our hotel the 4* New
Otani, for four nights. Located in the heart of Tokyo,
close to Japanese parliament, the hotel has a charming
traditional Japanese garden. We enjoy a short orientation
walk in the surrounding area, with the rest of your first day at
leisure.
Saturday 8th April 2017
This morning we explore Japan’s capital and largest city,
Tokyo. Enjoy it’s gleaming skyscrapers, clean and
surprisingly quiet streets. There is no beeping of horns - that
would be far too impolite! We visit the Shinto Meiji shrine,
dedicated to one of its past emperors. Set in lush parkland, it
hosts many typical Japanese weddings. Our tour visits
Omotesando Street, Tokyo’s ‘Rodeo Drive’, Harajuku,
Akihabara, home to a personal robot store, we savour
Japanese cuisine at a restaurant specialising in yakitori
grilled dishes.
Sunday 9th April 2017
Today we drive north of the city passing rural farms and

towns towards the great spine of mountains running the
length of Honshu, Japan’s largest island. We visit the Nikko

National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site it dates from

The Toshogu shrine consists of a complex of shrines, gates

We enjoy lunch and continue to the 33ft Kegon Falls
and the serene waters of Lake Chuzenji. We return to
Tokyo in the late afternoon.
Monday 10th April 2017
This morning we visit Tokyo’s Asakusa district
displaying traditional shops and houses. We take a
scenic boat trip along the Arakawa River to Ginza,
known for it’s luxurious shops. See ultra-modern
department stores, boutiques and restaurants. Enjoy a
free afternoon to explore this vibrant area or perhaps
visit the Tokyo National Museum and see the worlds
largest collection of Japanese art and other intriguing
antiquities.
Tuesday 11th April 2017
We depart Tokyo and drive towards Mt. Fuji.
Surrounded by forests and shimmering lakes we are
presented with one of the worlds most spectacular
views. We visit Lake Kawaguchi, undiscovered by
most foreign visitors, onwards to Hakone where we
take a trip by aerial gondola up the steep mountainside
to see the Owakudani “Boiling Valley”, here the entire
slope steams with hot volcanic vents. We then visit
Lake Ashi and take a cruise on an eccentric version of
a 19th century pirate ship, enjoy panoramic views of
Mt. Fuji. Following our lake cruise we journey to our
hotel the 4* Hakone Hotel, the area is geo-thermally
active so take the opportunity to enjoy bathing in an
“onsen” hot spring at our hotel.

Wednesday 12th April 2017
This morning we travel to Hiroshima on the
iconic white bullet train. Enjoy reclining seats,
plenty of legroom, air conditioning and speeds
up to 189mph. Arriving at lunchtime we see the
small island of Miyajima, here a huge red “Torii”
gate sits just offshore, at high tide it appears to
float between the sea and sky. This island is
easy to explore on foot with interesting shops
and a covered market. We return to Hiroshima
and stay overnight at the 4* ANA Crowne Plaza.
Saturday 15th April 2017
At Nara we see one of the country’s most iconic
shrines, made from red Torii gates and forming
two wooden tunnels up a hillside. Arriving at Nara
we will be greeted by dozens of tame deer
considered in Japanese religion to be
messengers from the Gods. See the world’s
largest wooden structure, the Todai-ji temple,
housing a huge bronze Buddha. This is a fantastic
sight and understandably a UNESCO World
Heritage site.
Thursday 13th April 2017
Today we visit Hiroshima’s Peace Park and
museum, displaying the remains of the only
building to survive the atomic blast of 1945. The
city is completely rebuilt and no signs remain of
that fateful day. This afternoon we leave
Hiroshima and journey to the old imperial capital
of Kyoto. Along the way we visit the Korakuen
garden at Okayama, built in 1700 and
renowned as one of the country’s most exquisite
gardens. Our hotel for the next four nights in
Kyoto is the 4* Royal Hotel and Spa.
Sunday 16th April 2017
Today we have a free day to explore Kyoto,
Our hotels on this tour are as follows:
perhaps visit the 15th century Silver Pavilion or the
Eikando temple, both marvels of architecture and New Otani Hotel - Tokyo
within easy walk of each other along the
Philosopher's Path. Perhaps partake in an origami Hakone Hotel - Hakone
lesson, flower arranging, geisha dress or
ANA Crowne Plaza - Hiroshima
Japanese cooking?
Friday 14th April 2017
Today is one of the highlights of our tour.
Exploring Kyoto we visit the spectacular Golden
Pavilion, perfectly overlooking its lake and
garden. The whole of the upper floors are
covered in gold leaf and glow in morning light.
Nearby explore the Ryoan-ji Temple or the
Temple of the Dragon at Peace, home to
Japan’s most famous Zen garden with carefully
arranged rocks and white gravel raked by
monks daily. We later visit the Arashiyama
bamboo forest, here light streams up through tall
green columns of bamboo up to 30ft high. Later
visit Nijo Castle famous for its wooden floors
designed to creak like a nightingale’s song. We
then take a walking tour through Kyoto’s Gion
district to see the classic image of Japan. See
streets of wooden houses, the sound of wooden
sandals, bright, silk-clad geishas, cherry trees
and a host of traditional restaurants.
You also have the option of staying in a
Ryokan, a typical Japanese inn, sleeping on a
rolled out futon with tatami matting on the floor
and enjoy a traditional “kaiseki” multi-course
dinner. This is subject to availability and needs
to be pre-booked, please mention at time of
booking, prices from £119pp.
