Dear Friends,
It has been a wonderful year at the Art Museum. Thanks
to your continued support and enthusiasm, we are happy
to announce that from September 1, 2010 to August 31,
2011, the Cincinnati Art Museum welcomed over 272,000
visitors through its doors, marking this fiscal year as the
third highest year in visitor attendance in our history. This
is an amazing accomplishment for our museum at a time
when so many venues are competing for public favor.
This record year would not have been possible without
the support of both the community and individuals such
as you.
We’re thrilled to have experienced this record-breaking
attendance, and we continue to enjoy high visitor figures
during the current year. As of now, we have already
exceeded last year’s attendance numbers by 15,222 and
are well on our way to another record-breaking year in
attendance thanks to you. We’re glad to keep you coming

back for more, and will always strive to keep things
stimulating and educational, fun and exciting for visitors of
all ages here at your Art Museum.
While our exhibitions brought in large audiences, we have
also been taking care of our heritage and working on our
future. We renovated the Schmidlapp Gallery into our Icons
gallery, highlighting masterworks from our collections.
We are displaying thousands of objects in our 6,000 Years
gallery, and have brought other works out of storage to
include in exhibitions throughout the Art Museum.
We are renovating the former Art Academy building into
the new home for the Mary R. Schiff Library as well as most
of our staff offices. On time and under budget, this phase
of the building will soon be completed, and we can already
look ahead to occupying the new space within the year.
We can also share that we have successfully raised over
80% of the funding for the project thanks to the generosity
and interest of our many friends and supporters. We are
now moving on with the planning for the next phase, the
expansion of the Cincinnati Wing, the addition of both
permanent galleries and a temporary exhibition spaces,
and a new education space. We will add close to 15,000
square feet of space to show our permanent collection
and special exhibitions – an increase of 20% over what we
have today.

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO
Last year’s calendar was filled with exhibitions that in
many ways celebrated what the Art Museum already had

to offer from its permanent collection. The season kicked
off with two exhibitions, Thomas Gainsborough and the
Modern Woman and Wedded Perfection: Two Centuries
of Wedding Gowns. Wedded Perfection alone brought
in over 63,000 visitors to the Art Museum from October
2010 through January 2011, when nearly fifty wedding
gowns and dresses from the late 18th century to the
present day were shown for the first time. Visitors had
the opportunity to see dresses from our internationally
renowned permanent collection and those on loan from
major designers, including Christian Dior, Vera Wang, and
Zac Posen.
From February through July in 2011, you could experience
the history and brilliance of the circus with a display of
eighty circus posters printed by Cincinnati’s own Strobridge
Lithographing Company in The Amazing American Circus
Poster. The majority of the posters came from the Art
Museum’s own permanent collection, and many were
on display for the first time ever. Nearly 36,000 visitors
came in to discover the circus poster, with nearly 3,000
of those individuals staying to participate in one or more
of the sixteen programs that the Art Museum offered in
conjunction with the exhibition.
We were honored to celebrate the significant career of
Douglas S. Cramer by awarding him with the second
annual Cincinnati Art Award in May of last year. In
addition to being one of the world’s greatest collectors
of contemporary art, Cramer also achieved great success
in producing television hits such as The Love Boat and
Wonder Woman. We all appreciate his many gifts to the

Cincinnati Art Museum and other institutions, as they allow
us to see the work of great contemporary artists, such as
Andy Warhol, in person.
We brought the year to a close with a new visitor-activated
installment of our DRAW program: a sequence of lectures,
performances, seminars, and exhibits that draw out
the meaning and relevance of art as well as the visitor’s
participation. Titled Here, There and Everywhere, this latest
DRAW program, developed and co-curated by a member
of our Finance Department, focused on the central theme
of hunger. Visitors were encouraged to reflect on the world
issue of hunger as we presented them with culturally and
historically diverse works all revolving around the central
need for food. The Art Museum gave the community an
additional opportunity to react to this issue by sponsoring
a 5K Walk/Run to Feed the Hungry on Saturday, August
27th. The proceeds of the event were donated to the
FreeStore FoodBank, City Gospel Mission and Kids Against
Hunger. DRAW: Here, There and Everywhere was another
way in which the Art Museum was able to fulfill their
mission of bringing people and art together, while also
raising awareness for a major problem in the world today.
We have been extremely busy in striving to keep you as
excited as last year, if not more so, with what we’ve offered
in our exhibitions and programming this year. We opened
the year with another great exhibition on fashion. This
time we brought the glimmer and glamor of the Roaring
Twenties into the forefront with Art Deco: Fashion and
Design in the Jazz Age. Close to 35,000 visitors came in to
see the twenty spectacular examples of ornate and flapper7
Participants in the DRAW: 5K Walk/Run event
esque evening dresses that were so characteristic of the
1920s and 30s.
Last year we reported that big changes were underway
with the renovation of the Schmidlapp Gallery. We’re glad
to report that renovation was completed in October 2011,
and as a result, we are now able to present you with a
visually striking wing that not only highlights eighteen of
our most iconic works of art, but also encourages a visitor
experience of intimacy and reflection with each of these
masterpieces.
In December, we filled the Ambulatory with Picasso
Master Prints, an exhibition created with works from our
permanent collection. We let you explore the artist’s world
of printmaking by displaying a diverse range of etchings,
lithographs and linocuts produced from the 1920s through
the 1950s. In January, we brought Chicago-based artist
Nick Cave to Cincinnati with a museum-wide exhibition of
his superbly crafted Soundsuits. These Soundsuits came
to life in several ‘Invasions’ that popped up around the
city, including surprise performances at locations such as
Findlay Market, The Cincinnati Ballet, and in the Opening
Day Parade. The Art Museum kept up the momentum
in February 2012 by filling The Thomas R. Schiff Gallery
with twelve of Claude Monet’s masterpieces, including
several of his most iconic works depicting water lilies and
Japanese footbridges. The culmination of these three great
exhibitions and high attendance numbers was our decision
to stay open until 9 p.m. on Fridays throughout April to
accommodate the large number of visitors coming in to
enjoy what we had to offer.

Always a hugely popular event, Art in Bloom returns in
November 2011.
If you have come to visit us lately, you likely noticed a new
character standing in front of our building, opening his
arms wide to invite you in. Pinocchio (Emotional), a twelve
foot bronze sculpture by Cincinnati-native Jim Dine, was
installed and publicly unveiled to the community on
April 4th. Students from two local elementary schools were
fascinated to watch as Pinocchio was unveiled, and were
ecstatic at the opportunity to talk to the artist himself after
the event. Inside the Art Museum, visitors can explore the
fantasies of Dine even further with the newly acquired print
portfolio of his illustrations depicting Carlo Collodi’s The
Adventures of Pinocchio.
WHAT’S NEXT
This spring, we also installed four beautiful Tiffany windows
acquired from a church in North Avondale. Restored
to their original splendor, they now shine forth in the
Ambulatory above the Great Hall.
In addition to our progression with the Art Museum’s
renovation plans, we are also enthusiastic to offer a number
of remarkable exhibitions in the near future, including
Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit, opening this
month, and The Art of Sound: Four Centuries of Musical
Instruments, which will be opening in June. As the world
sets its eyes and ears on Cincinnati for the World Choir
Games in July, The Art of Sound will showcase musical
instruments selected from our permanent collection of over
eight hundred examples.
In the coming year, the work of Herb Ritts, Los Angeles9
based fashion photographer, will be on display; the Starn
twins’ Gravity of Light series of photographs will be on
view at the Mt. Adams Monastery; the color lithographs
and posters of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec will transport you
to 19th century Bohemian life in France; and we will be
honoring the work of Cincinnati artist Edward Potthast in
celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Cincinnati Wing
in the summer of next year. We hope, as always, that you
will come to see what’s going on at your Art Museum.
You don’t want to miss the 22nd annual festival of wine
and food of A Taste of Duveneck, which is coming up
right around the corner on June 7. There will be great live
music, a live auction, and a raffle this year so make your
reservations now. Look for more information about this
favorite summer event on our website.
There is always something great happening at your
Art Museum. Members at every level receive invitations
to exclusive events throughout the year, from exhibition
opening receptions to black tie dinners, this is definitely a
place to see and be seen.
Check us out online. We’re happy to present you with a
redesigned and reconfigured website that allows you to
interact with our collections in a new, and more social,
way. Share your thoughts and ideas, get directions, check
out what’s new and sync your calendar with the latest
Art Museum events.
Please take a few moments to read through the rest of this
report, which includes highlights of the past year, exhibition

plans for the year to come, and the very important business
of thanking our many donors and supporters, without
whom none of our work would be possible.
We look forward to seeing you here at your Art Museum
experiencing and enjoying all that we have to offer now,
and in years to come.
Sincerely, and with thanks,
Aaron Betsky

A Tribute to “Skip” Fleischmann
November 19, 2011 – March 18, 2012
Charles Fleischmann III, also known as “Skip,” was one of the most
generous donors of works of art and funds for art purchase in the
history of the Cincinnati Art Museum. His legacy includes approximately
2,000 portrait miniatures, making the Art Museum one of the leading
repositories in the country. This scholar-collector’s love of portraiture
extended to wax sculpture, and he amassed hair jewelry to complement
the miniatures. Prints, textiles and decorative arts are also featured in
this exhibition, which reflects only a small fraction of the more than 3,000
contributions he made to the collections across media and time.
Impressions of Venice (node in gallery 121)
March 17 – August 26, 2012
Impressions of Venice exemplifies beautiful Venice, the most depicted
city in the world by 1900, and demonstrates how Venice influenced
Cincinnati, its art and artists. Works on view date from the late 1870s to
about 1920, with most pieces coming from the 1880s, and all from the
Cincinnati Art Museum’s permanent collections. Venetian lace and glass
collected by the Art Museum in the 1880s are combined with examples
of scenic photography, a vase and plaque decorated by Carl Schmidt
for The Rookwood Pottery’s Venetian Vellum line, along with critic John
Ruskin’s landmark book The Stones of Venice (1851-53), and an etched
copper plate shown in tandem with Frank Duveneck’s etching tools.
Paintings and prints are represented by Robert Blum, Frank Duveneck,
Joseph DeCamp, John Twachtman, and Cincinnati’s seminal Venetian
influence James Abbott McNeill Whistler.
In Celebration of Pinocchio (node in gallery 124)

explores fairytale in the work of contemporary Cincinnati artists. Dine’s
print portfolio illustrating Carlo Collodi’s original 1883 story is featured
along with Dine’s large-scale drawing and bas-relief sculpture. The
theme continues with another recent acquisition, Casey Rioden Millard’s
sculpture Shark Girl with Art Museum. Mark Fox’s portfolio of marionette
prints uses puppet figures to re-interpret narrative while Jay Bolotin’s
large-scale print transforms a local legend into an epic tale. Completing
the selection is Will Hutchinson’s 1,000 Cranes, a work based on the true
story of Sadako Saski, on loan from the Collection Sara and Michelle
Vance Waddell.
New Acquisitions: Tiffany Windows
To debut on May 12, 2012
This installation showcases four rare Tiffany stained glass windows. Tiffany
Studios produced thousands of religious stained glass windows in the
late 19th and early 20th centuries, but more than half of these have been
lost. The windows recently acquired by the Art Museum were originally
commissioned for St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in
Avondale. They are displayed with the Art Museum’s important collection
of Tiffany blown glass vases to underscore the significance of Louis
Comfort Tiffany’s contributions to the history of American decorative art
and design.
Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit
May 26 – September 9, 2012
Organized by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts,
Philadelphia, PA
More than one hundred works, from paintings to sculpture, are featured
in this major exhibition devoted to the acclaimed artist Henry Ossawa
Tanner (1859–1937). The exhibition follows Tanner’s personal journey
to explore his work from many facets: the impact of his upbringing and
education as a young African American in Philadelphia in the years after

the Civil War; his success as an American expatriate artist at the highest
levels of the international art world at the turn of the 20th century;
Tanner’s role as a leader of an artist’s colony in rural France; and his
contributions in aid of American servicemen to the efforts of the Red
Cross during WWI. Landscapes, portraits and luminous street scenes
from Tanner’s visits to the Holy Land and Near East are included in this
exhibition, which highlights his invigoration of religious painting, an
endeavour deeply rooted in his own faith. Organized by the Pennsylvania
Academy of Fine Arts, this exhibition is the second stop on a three-city
tour, and is accompanied by both a major catalogue, and a children’s
book by renowned artist Faith Ringgold.
Printmaking Today
June 2, 2012 – August 19, 2012
Modern visual culture is inextricably linked to creative artists who explore
new directions and push boundaries. At the same time technological
changes have transformed the visual image and the transfer of visual
information. Printmakers have both brought innovations to established
print media and at the same time embraced new digital processes.
Among the artists pushing boundaries are Jay Bolotin, Willie Cole, and
Julie Mehretu. Those exploring new horizons with digital technology
include Ann Hamilton, Jane Hammond, and Jennifer Purdum. This
exhibition explores printmaking in the first decade of the 21st century
through recent acquisitions to the permanent collection.
The Art of Sound: Four Centuries of Musical Instruments
June 16 – September 2, 2012
This exhibition will draw from our permanent collection of over 800
classical and ethnographical musical instruments, the majority of which
were given to the Art Museum in 1914 and 1919 by Cincinnatian
William Howard Doane. Most of these instruments from this remarkable
collection have never been properly catalogued and until now have been

unavailable to visitors. It’s a rare opportunity to experience this niche in
music’s history and development.
Aston Martin DB5
June 19 – July 15, 2012
This summer, for one month only, an icon of design, film and popular
culture will be on display at the Art Museum: James Bond’s Aston Martin
DB5. Owned by a local collector, this car was the stunt car driven by actor
Sean Connery in the films Goldfinger (1964) and Thunderball (1965). In
true 007 style, it features a revolving license plate, tire-slicing wheel caps,
console-activated oil slick, smoke screen, bullet shield, front end machine
guns, and the infamous ejector seat trigger button. Yet, stripped of all of
its gadgets, it still stands as an icon of design—sculpted to seduce with
killer lines and looks.
Schiele Prize
September 29 – December 9, 2012
Exhibition of artwork by the winner of the first Marjorie Schiele Prize.
The triennial award honors the work and legacy of Marjorie Schiele, a
Cincinnati artist whose generous bequest established it. Eligibility is
restricted to artists and designers who hold a degree from an accredited
school of art and design, and who have received prior recognition in
publication or exhibition beyond a local level.
Marjorie Schiele (1913-2008): Artist, Expatriate, Benefactor
September 29 – December 9, 2012
This exhibition of paintings and drawings by Marjorie Schiele pays tribute
to this artist, expatriate, and benefactor, and provides an opportunity to
view a selection of her work that will join the Museum’s major collection
of Cincinnati artists. Schiele, who was Cincinnati-born and educated,
lived most of her life in Paris and Monte Carlo. She studied art in France
and traveled extensively until she fled from Europe to New York in 1940

due to World War II. In New York, she became a student and assistant
to the French painter and writer Amédée Ozenfant. Ozenfant
introduced Schiele to a band of expatriate artists, which included
Piet Mondrian, Fernand Léger, Marcel Duchamp, Lyonel Feininger,
and Max Ernst amongst other notables. Schiele returned to France in
1952 and exhibited her paintings in both solo and group exhibitions,
but never forgot her Cincinnati roots. She created an endowment to
benefit the Cincinnati Art Museum, from which the Marjorie Schiele Prize
was established. The Prize will support an exhibition of paintings and
sculpture by a living artist triennially.
Herb Ritts: L.A. Style
October 6 – December 30, 2012
Curated by Paul Martineau for the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
He revolutionized fashion photography, modernized the nude, and
transformed celebrities into icons. Through hard work and a distinctive
vision, Herb Ritts (1952–2002) fashioned himself into one of the top
photographers to emerge from the 1980s. Ritts’s aesthetic incorporated
facets of life in and around Los Angeles. He often made use of the bright
California sunlight to produce bold contrasts, and his preference for
outdoor locations such as the desert and the beach helped to separate
his work from that of his New York-based peers. L.A. Style presents Ritts’s
intimate portraiture, his modern yet classical treatment of the nude,
and his innovative approach to fashion which brought him international
acclaim and placed him securely within an American tradition of portrait
and magazine photography that includes Richard Avedon, Robert
Mapplethorpe, and Irving Penn. Ritts’s images that bridged the gap
between art and commerce are not only a testament to the power of his
imagination and technical skill, but also the synergistic union between
art, popular culture, and business that followed in the wake of the
Pop Art movement of the 1960s and 1970s.

Doug and Mike Starn: Gravity of Light
Holy Cross Church at the Mount Adams Monastery
October 6 – December 30, 2012
Since well before the Renaissance, light has been used for and
understood as a metaphor for illumination, spiritual or intellectual;
light is, of course, the opposite of dark. It is also the primary material
of photography. In Gravity of Light, Doug and Mike Starn present a
compilation of four series of photographs that extend this classical
metaphor. Central to the exhibition is a blindingly bright arc lamp,
mimicking the sun—a facsimile of Sir Humphry Davy’s “volaic arc” used in
the first discovery of electric “artificial light in 1804. Equal parts sculpture,
scientific experiment and photography, Gravity of Light is as much a
system of transmissions as it is an exhibition of object photographs.
The Starns’ art does not hold the world in suspension as an object for
contemplation, but rather suspends the viewer in a world of their own
making—a chamber of sensorial and experiential discovery, that renders
each of us conductors; absorbers and emitters of the universe’s energy.
Toulouse-Lautrec and the Spectacles of Paris
October 13, 2012 – January 13, 2013
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, one of the greatest draftsman of the 1890s,
is important for his mastery of line, his innovative use of flat color, and
incisive commentary on his contemporary social milieu. He portrayed
the bohemian life of Montmartre, the hub of the artistic, intellectual and
literary avant-garde, with its growing number of commercialized theaters,
café-concerts, cabarets, and dance halls. His made striking images for
public consumption as advertisements, posters and illustrations based
on dance hall performers, poets and denizens of the demimonde. His
posters for the nocturnal amusements of Paris with their sweeping lines,
bold areas of color, and startling patterns, were heavily influenced by
Japanese prints. This move into popular culture, with a love of character

and his flair for color lithography makes him one of the most important
Post-Impressionists.
James Welling: Monograph
February 2 – May 5, 2013
Artist James Welling has created beautiful and challenging photographs
for over thirty-five years. Operating in the hybrid ground between
painting and sculpture and traditional photography, he is a foremost
photographic practitioner enthralled with the possibilities of the medium.
Since the mid-1970s, Welling’s practice has unflaggingly shifted to
address an impressive array of issues and ideas: the tenets of realism
and transparency, abstraction and representation, optics and description,
personal and cultural memory, and the material and chemical nature of
photography. His program, in particular, helps refine our definition of a
photograph while offering a meaningful new paradigm for contemporary
art. Monograph is the first comprehensive exhibition of this singular artist.
It witnesses Welling’s sustained relevance and enviable staying power
in this field while simultaneously explicating the primary strands that
permeate this artist’s seemingly disparate oeuvre over three decades.
Eternal Summer: The Art of Edward Henry Potthast
June 8 – September 8, 2013
Cincinnati native Edward Henry Potthast is celebrated for his sun-filled
paintings of Americans at the shore. This exhibition of 90 works is
the first to explore the full range of this American Impressionist’s art,
featuring alongside Potthast’s famous beach pictures his portrayals of
European peasants and agricultural laborers, harbor views, landscapes
and portraits. With sketchbooks, watercolors, pastels, prints, and oil
paintings, the exhibition will reveal his accomplishments across media,
from studies to finished works of art. A catalogue published by
D. Giles, Ltd., will explore Potthast’s life and work in depth and include
a conservation study of his techniques.

• Exhibition Related Programming
In 2010-2011, the Division of Learning & Interpretation
developed a series of public programs to support our
amazing slate of special exhibitions. Programs created
in conjunction with Wedded Perfection: Two Centuries
of Wedding Gowns included gallery talks with Cynthia
Amnéus, curator of fashion arts and textiles; Amy StorerScalia, editor of Cincy Chic and Madelyn Detloff, Director
& Associate Professor of Women’s Studies at the University
of Miami. Visitors also enjoyed live music with a matrimonial
theme and a showing of the film, Always a Bridesmaid.
During the run of the exhibition we hosted 121 group
tours of the exhibition as well as many public tours. Over
2000 visitors attended a guided tour during the run of the
exhibition.
In the summer of 2011, the circus came to the Art Museum
with the exhibition, The Amazing American Circus Poster.
To support this family friendly exhibition the Division
of Learning and Interpretation created a well-rounded
schedule of programming that welcomed over 2800
people into the Art Museum. Tapping into the expertise
of local circus experts, Circus Mojo, the Art Museum held
several programs utilizing their expertise. These included
a Community Day that turned the courtyard into a threeringed circus. Other programs geared to our youngest
visitors included Family First Saturday: It’s A Circus in Here,
Culture Kids: In Your Dreams and Wee Wednesday: When I
Grow Up. For the older circus fans, the Art Museum hosted
a symposium, several gallery talks, film showings, an art
history class and a print- making workshop.

• DRAW: Here, There and Everywhere
Exhibition & Programming
In the summer of 2011 the Cincinnati Art Museum tried
something new. For the first time, we created a special
exhibition addressing a major world issue – hunger. On
display from June 4 through August 28, 2011, DRAW:
Here, There and Everywhere encouraged visitors to think,
feel and act. Based around the central theme of food,
this exhibition addressed the issue of world hunger and

New Century Society
The New Century Society is an honor roll
of thoughtful and generous individuals who
have provided for the Art Museum’s future
through planned giving. There are many ways
to make a planned gift, including bequests,
gifts through a charitable gift annuity,
charitable trust, the Art Museum’s Pooled
Income Fund, gifts naming the Art Museum
as the beneficiary of your tax-deferred
retirement plan and life insurance policy, or
an irrevocable commitment to donate or
bequeath a work of art. New Century Society
members help to build a stronger endowment
and ensure the growth of the Art Museum’s
collection, enabling this great institution to
continue to inspire, delight and educate future
generations of visitors.

Endowment Funds
Endowments provide a permanent financial
foundation for the Cincinnati Art Museum.
Since the first endowment was established
in 1881, these funds have ensured that the
Art Museum will be enjoyed by generations
to come. Specialized endowments help care
for the collection, purchase new works of art,
organize exhibitions and provide educational
programs to our city and region.
