Arts and Culture Online Resources: A Close Look at a Play - A Raisin in the Sun Revisited: Chapter 7 Video/ Upper Elementary-HS This segment of A Raisin in the Sun Revisited focuses on Act II of the play Clybourne Park. We flash forward 50 years to 2009. Clybourne Park has become an all-black neighborhood. As white buyers now desire to return to the city, a couple begins a conversation with the current neighborhood association representatives, a black couple. The discussion quickly dissolves into one of racial issues, revealing resentments from both parties that echo back to the familiar tensions from Act One. The Incredible True Story of the Blobfish - Songs for Unusual Creatures (The Tubax and the Contrabassoon) Video/ Grade: K-HS The blobfish was recently declared "The World's Ugliest Animal!", but is that really fair? Even if the blobfish is less attractive that some of its fishy cohorts, does that make it any less lovable? Let's take a closer look at how this unusual creature became an overnight celebrity. While we're at it, how about a musical boxing match performed on two of the lowest-pitched instruments -tubax and contrabassoon? The Junkman - Music Arts Toolkit Online/ Grade: K-Elementary Donald Knaack, a percussionist known as “The Junkman” because he makes music with found junk items, works with students and the Louisville Youth Orchestra and talks about the value of using junk to create rhythms and music. Bubble Beats Interactive/ Grade: PreK-Early Elementary Can you identify unique beats? In this interactive, students join tropical friends under the sea to test whether they can tell the difference between fun bongo beats. Some beats are slower and some are faster. Some are simple, while others are more complicated. This resource is part of the KET Art to Heart collection. ************************************************* 3. Health, Wellness and Fitness Online Resources: Inside our Human Body - Kidneys Video/ More/ Grade: 6-HS The video explains the human body's filtration system, examining the intricate structure of the kidneys and such complications as kidney stones and kidney failure. DragonflyTV - Glo Germ Video/ Grade: Elementary-MS As the weather gets colder, kids seem to share a lot more germs. These busy scientists don't have time to get sick. Their question: how can we avoid spreading germs and viruses to our friends and families? Does it make a difference whether we sneeze into our hands or into our elbows? Healthy Habits: Coughing and Washing Hands Video/ Grade: PreK-K This video demonstrates two of the most important habits we can teach children: covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze and washing your hands. In this video, a young girl demonstrates the correct procedure for performing these two simple tasks. It’s important to introduce preschool-age children to healthy habits and to reinforce these habits while they are young so that they become automatic. ************************************************ 4. Language Arts Online Resources: Carl Sandburg: Poet of the People Video & Resources/ Grade: MS-HS In this video from American Masters: The Day Carl Sandburg Died, students learn about Carl Sandburg and his early days as a “poet of the people.” As a young man, Sandburg worked as an organizer for the Social-Democratic Party of Wisconsin. This work helped to fuel his poetry, which led him to focus on issues relevant to working people and the poor. What if the Civil War Were Tweeted? Video/ Grade: MS-HS Explore innovations in communication technology during the Civil War and how they impacted the news media, in this video from The Good Stuff: Time Capsule. Using discussion questions and teaching tips, students will learn about how the telegram changed the way news was reported and compare it to our own social media revolution. Dramatic Interpretation of Literature: The Tell-Tale Heart Video & Resources/ Grade: 6-12 Actor Kevin Hardesty gives a dramatic reading of a passage from the Edgar Allan Poe story “The Tell-Tale Heart.” The text is shown on screen alongside his performance. Mungu's Revenge (Myths and Legends) Video/ Grade: 2-5 Listen in as the crew tell each other creature stories which are a magical mixture of wildlife facts, African myths, and Australian aboriginal legends. Chris tells viewers how the rhino got its horn from Mungu, lord of all living things. Allison tells how the duck-billed platypus was asked by mammals, fish, and birds to join their groups but decided to remain true to itself as one of the world's only egg-laying mammals. Finally, Martin tells how the ostrich, unable to fly, was given fast, powerful legs to run away from danger. The Blue Sky Online Book/ Grade: PreK-4 In this online book from the International Children's Digital Library, a sad and lonely little girl dreams of seeing her mother again as she watches the clouds in the sky. She finds friends in the birds who talk to her. She discovers that creatures live in the clouds, and finally one of the birds help her return to her mother. ************************************************* 5. Math Online Resources: Distributive Property Video/ Grade: Upper Elementary-HS This video explains the distributive property in multiplication. It means that if you have a number multiplying addition and/or subtraction inside parentheses, you can distribute multiplication over the parentheses to ALL the numbers inside, kinda like the way you distribute friendship bracelets to your ALL your buddies. Cause if you make one for one friend, then all your friends gets them. Cyberchase Math: Measure and Measure Lesson/ Grade: Elementary Students learn why non-standard measures can be useful even when measurements must be precise. They practice measuring using non-standard measures. Calculating Speed Video/ Grade: Elementary In this video segment from Cyberchase, the CyberSquad has to find out exactly how fast each of Wicked’s three brooms can go. They set out to calculate the speed per second of each broom using the data they have from their speed tests over a period of five seconds. Slavery and the U.S. Constitution Blended Lesson/ Grade: 5-8 In this blended lesson supporting literacy skills, students learn about the debate over slavery at the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Students develop their literacy skills as they explore a social studies focus on the changing perception of slavery in the new United States and the ways in which the debate over slavery affected the content of the Constitution. During this process, they read informational text, learn and practice vocabulary words, and explore content through videos and interactive activities.
