But most • Light, airy look that of all they loved that this was where, for 18 years, they connotes relaxation had raised their children. With one child in college and an• Comfortable tub and spacious shower other heading off soon, they decided it was now or never • Ample storage to revamp the second floor, which they had never tackled. Designer Kathie Chrisicos’s primary decision was to redo the small master bedroom and add a bathroom. When it came to how the rooms should look, the wife had a scrapbook of ideas. “She liked the color of the walls in one photo and an English cottage touch in another,” says Chrisicos. “I felt she wanted a room that was light, airy and would give a feeling of being very relaxing.” Instead of opening the bedroom door directly onto the new bathroom, Chrisicos decided on a small vestibule. Linen closets behind mirrored French doors make the windowless area feel larger. The floor was paved in classic white/gray honed and polished 12" by 12" marble tiles with a 3" by 12" Azul Celeste polished border cut down from 12" by 12" tile, all laid on the diagonal. The door frames and ceiling were painted white, but the walls are a pale blue from English paint manufacturer, Farrell & Ball. The bathroom repeats this design motif. Vanities stand atop feet to look like furniture. Most surfaces are covered in white/gray Carrera marble—honed floor tiles, twin vanities, the tub surround and shower bench. To continue the airy feeling, large mirrors at the vanities are framed in white painted wood, and the marble-lined shower has frameless glass doors with a blue edge. Satin silver and polished nickel finishes for the faucets and hardware add a splash of sheen. Other thoughtful touches are the separate toilet compartment, alignment of the room’s small-paned bay window with others on the home’s exterior, and classic white shutters. “It’s the little architectural details and choice of materials that help this room shine,” says Chrisicos. —Barbara Ballinger WISH LIST 112 DISTINCTIVE KITCHEN SOLUTIONS Mirrored French doors in vestibule; “Rug” pattern in diagonally laid marble floors; Surprising accent of pale blue wall paint LOCATION: Suburban Boston, MA DIMENSIONS: 10' by 10' includes the bay window; separate toilet room is 3' by 4' PRODUCTS USED: • Lighting: Wolfers, Boston, MA • Chandelier, vestibule: Bagatelle, from Schonbeck • Exhaust fan: Fantech • Tile on floor: Carrera in different sizes, Tile Showcase, Watertown, MA • Countertops and tub surround: Carrera, Olympia Marble & Granite, Needham, MA • Cabinets and tub surround cabinetry: Kitchen Views, Newton Center, MA • Shower glass: Custom, frameless glass, Prestige, Waltham, MA • Faucets: Shirlee series, satin silver finish, Brickman’s, Waltham, MA (now out of business) • Toilet: Toto • Sinks: Kohler • Caxton tub: Kohler RIGHT: The bathroom’s palette recreates a five-star hotel’s chicness with white expanses and satin silver and polished nickel finishes.
