The course is designed to provide educators with an in-depth exploration of the
American Revolutionary period (1763-1791), and how this knowledge can be used to
implement cross-curricular lessons in all subject areas consistent with the Pennsylvania
Core Standards. The strengths and weaknesses of each side in the Revolutionary War
will be explored in detail.

Discuss new problems the British government faced in governing its colonies
after 1763, and the colonist’s response to helping pay the cost of protecting
the empire and themselves
Understand the issue of representation of the colonies in Parliament
Discuss three actions taken by the First Continental Congress in response to
the Intolerable Acts, and the preparations made by colonists in early 1775 to
defend themselves from attack
Examine the view of delegates to the Second Continental Congress regarding
colonial relations with Great Britain
Identify main arguments for and against the final break with Great Britain in
1776
Describe why the theory of government presented in the Declaration of
Independence was significant
