Edwards Center 2014 Annual Report

OUR SERVICES
At Edwards Center we believe in family. Our goal is to help each individual
reach their highest potential through training, support and education.
We believe everyone has the right to lead a full and productive life in their
community. This can be achieved by promoting choice and independence
in healthy environments.
Residential: We offer a range of living options that
includes independent living in the setting of your choice
where supports are delivered to you as you need them,
supervised semi-independent living in apartments and
duplexes, 24 hour care in a traditional home setting, and
24 hour nursing services at our medical facility. Our
newest service option, the Aloha Project, offers family
living where adults with disabilities and their parents can
live and age together in a supportive community.
Employment & ATE: Our largest single program, Edwards
Enterprises, employs 150 adults with disabilities who live at
home with family or in group and foster homes across the
metro area. We offer enclaves in the community, job
coaching and placement for those seeking competitive
employment, and structured work at our plant in Beaverton. For those who retire or are unable to work, we offer
an Alternative to Work program that provides therapy,
recreation and social opportunities during traditional work
hours. These programs are delivered off site in Aloha and
Milwaukie.
Aloha Community Center: Our newest facility, the Aloha
Community Center provides continuing education and
training. Classes are offered 6 days a week and include
skill building (such as cooking, sewing and literacy),
exercise, and self expression (art, music and dance). We
also offer socialization and recreational activities in the
evening and on weekends. New and seasonal classes are
offered quarterly. The center boasts partnerships with
several other non profits including Meals on Wheels who
provide a hot meal on site daily.
Vox: Latin for voice our Vox organization advocates for
everyone at Edwards Center. Comprised of the family
members of those we serve, Vox acts as the voice for
those who cannot speak for themselves. Each location and
program at the Edwards Center has an elected Vox
representative who monitors the program, advocates for
the program’s needs, and alerts Edwards administration to
issues or concerns. Vox leaders also serve as voting
members on the Board of Directors. This unique group
assures that families and individuals with disabilities
remain at the center of our work.
WELCOME TO EDWARDS PLACE
The first of its kind in the nation, Edwards Place will serve families
with adult children with disabilities. Designed with flexible living
options, parents and their adult children will live here together and
have their needs met. In other cases, caregivers and single individuals
will live in supported environments. The homes are built so physical
needs can change without requiring families to move. Services will be
brought to them.
It was while a graduate student studying abroad, that I was introduced to an
emerging concept in Scandinavia. “Normalization” would become the fuel that
would ignite my dreams and later be realized in the creation of the Edwards
Center and its residential and vocational services. A life span of services was our
dream.
Edwards Place represents the final piece of that Life Span Plan of services and some
deeply felt values rooted from the beginning of Edwards Center, Inc.
Our commitment to Normalization is represented in these homes. We believe quality and
wonderful design should not be sacrificed in order to create accessible and workable living
environments for those with developmental disabilities and their aging parents.
Edwards Center is committed to creating family homes that are more alike than different from the mainstream of our
community. Edwards’ design team paid special attention to balancing the need for handicapped access without sacrificing
the visual and “wow” factor that families want in a home today. While some “institutional” products could offer a life-time
of no-maintenance, Edwards design team choose products of quality and endurance with a keen eye to design as well. We
wanted our homes to feel like homes and not care facilities. I believe we have achieved that in a wonderful way.
At Edwards Center we value activation and movement in our clients lives. We hope that the close proximity to our
Community Center and its many classes will extend lives through socialization and recreation.
Another value of Edwards Center represented in these homes is our commitment to allow Edwards Center residents to age
in place with caregivers who know and love them. While many care facilities have strict limitations on the level of care they
will provide, Edwards Center offers lifetime care to those we serve. This means that residents will not be uprooted and sent
to other agencies when their care needs change. Edwards Place has been designed to allow our team to support care
needs in home as they age.
Inclusion is another strong value of Edwards Center. While not possible or advantageous in every case, we always
strive for the highest level of inclusion appropriate. Community support has been wonderful. Our neighbors have
pitched in and helped; we feel our pocket neighborhood is a real asset to the community. This community
inclusion means a great deal to my dream. Our first two homes are fully inclusive. The opening of our
community center to be a Meals on Wheels meal site in 2015, will provide further community inclusion.
As the year ends, my heart is full of joy for all that has been accomplished through the financial,
physical, and emotional support of families and friends.
Hundreds have made cash donations; others have given hours of donated labor,
businesses have donated goods and services but most importantly, so many have
believed in our mission.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart!

FOUNDER
HOW IT BEGAN
People with Developmental Disabilities have long known Mike and Jan Maginnis for
their generosity.
Imagine my joy when Mike told me ” we’ll give you $500,000 to jump-start your
project and your vision. I believe in you, Jean, and your experience and would like
to help you make this happen.”
Because of Mike and Jan Maginnis and others who joined them in making initial
pledges, we end calendar year 2014 with the first two homes completed. These
homes will serve three families and several individuals for a total of 10. The
Maginnis’s son, Kevin, and his extended family will live in one of the Homes.
Mike Maginnis has always been a man of hard work and vision. He has built two
McDonald’s franchisees, a Beef and Brew, a Chevy’s, an Artic Circle, two
Chuck-E-Cheese establishments and the B-Bops restaurant. Mike has provided jobs
for thousands of people in his establishments over the years and people come back
to thank him for his high standards which made them good employees.
After a windfall in 1991, Mike and Jan built the Progress Home in the Scholls area
providing housing for their son Kevin and 9 other adults with developmental
disabilities. They eventually saw the need for an umbrella organization to provide
life-long care for Kevin even after they are gone. Kevin’s two brother’s , Patrick and
Brian, are active in Kevin’s life and hope to help their parents feel more freedom
now that Kevin will be in the Edwards Place Community.
Mike & Jan Maginnis,
we SALUTE you!

healthy and stimulating environments.
FROM THE EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR
It has been an amazing year of growth and program development
at Edwards Center and Edwards Enterprises. One of the
important factors our stakeholders should know is that as we
grow as an agency, Edwards Center invests in the infrastructure
and development of our internal systems as well.
Over the last two years the managers at Edwards Center have
received training in accountability, communication and conflict
resolution. Some team members received individual coaching
and all persons participated a 16 hour training called the
Everyday Manager. Following that training the Board of Directors
adopted new standards of performance for all managers and
during 2014 those new standards have been added to all job
descriptions.
The new standards include expectations of performance in the
areas of professionalism, communication, role modeling,
responsiveness and exercising good judgment. We also established standards for advocacy, mindfulness of our roles as a
leaders in the organization, and standards for personnel
management to ensure a supportive and diverse workforce.
The Board was very aggressive in describing the skills and
behaviors they believe are synonymous with the reputation of
our agency, and that all supervisors should posses.
During 2015 we will continue to implement this important work.
We are still engaged in a critical culture change as we adapt and
grow to meet the demands of tomorrow’s clients. This is a work
in progress! So we hope you will remain supportive and patient
as we continue to strive to not just meet, but exceed the
standard of service and care that is Edwards Center.
